Death Pool
Not a new death, but Amy Winehouse died of alcohol poisoning. Good lord, BAL of 0.40.
(Not sure why this took so long to turn up. Is alcohol not part of the standard tox screening?)

Aw. When he stepped down from 60 Minutes, I suspected he thought the end was near.

Re: Death Pool
His books were hilarious. He was kind of like America's Cranky Grandpa.
Although, every time I hear his name, I hear Joe Piscapo's voice in my head saying, "HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED THAT THERE AREN'T MANY NAZIS NAMED STEVE?"

Oh, that's sad.
This is an unusual case of "I thought that guy was older than that." Usually it's "I had no idea he was that old."

Re: Death Pool
This is one of those deaths that actually really got to me.

Re: Death Pool
My reaction to this news was "Oh, no!" out loud. And I also thought he was older than 44. How sad.

Re: Death Pool
When I was wee, the comics page existed for two things: Charlie Brown and the Family Circus. Both were already long in the tooth by the time I came around and obviously both stayed around longer still, which is unfortunate, I think. But whatever they became by the end, both cartoons were influential. I don't know if I'll quite get this out the way I mean it, but the notion of "Not Me" in the Family Circus was huge for Li'l Laddie - the idea of an absence having a presence or the idea of representing abstract concepts as concrete personae was first presented to me by the Keane kids trying to lie their way out of trouble.

Re: Death Pool
I also loved The Family Circus when I was a kid. We had a few of the compilation books and I read them all the time when I was little. Once I read an interview with Bil Keane (or maybe it was a quote on the back of one of the books, actually) where someone asked if he based the comic on his family life, and he said "Actually, my family life is based on the cartoon. If a particular strip gets a good response, I try to incorporate into our lives." I thought that was very weird and illogical. It was only YEARS later that I realized he was kidding, and had probably gotten that question so many zillions of times that he decided to mix it up.
So: A belated Heh, and also, RIP.

Re: Death Pool
I'm so sorry to hear about John Neville. I didn't know he had Alzheimer's. I knew him from The X-Files and Little Women mostly, but I knew he'd been in the business a long time.
And I had no idea that there was a series of Emily of New Moon, never mind that he was in it!
