We watched The Artist last night and loved it. Jean Dujardin is superb.
Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
I FINALLY SAW TINKER TAILOR SOLDIER SPY.
It was magnificent and fun. John Hurt needs to read me bedtime stories. Mark Strong should do audio porn. I forgot how much I like him.

Just in case anyone was wondering, The Phantom Menace is not only just as bad as you recall, it's often worse. The Venn diagram of movies I like and movies my 9-year-old nephew likes does not have a great deal of overlap.

I actually found it better than I remembered. Check out the Darth Plagueis book, it explains a lot of things that were going on behind the scenes, and sets up the movie pretty well. Also, I realised that the worst dialogue in the movies is actually in Ep II. Sand, of course.

That may be true, but it's pretty bad moviemaking if one has to read a book to enjoy or understand what's going on in a film.Check out the Darth Plagueis book, it explains a lot of things that were going on behind the scenes, and sets up the movie pretty well.

I loved him in this movie -- I think he was robbed of a best supporting actor nomination. Seriously, who votes for Jonah Hill?

Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
I swear, this year's Oscar list is a big ball of WTFery. I can't speak about Hill since I didn't see Moneyball (even though I wanted to), but Strong was amazing and if he was nominated I'd have loved it. Firth also impressed me, but I haven't seen him in much to be honest.
The ending montage also has stuck with me. What a sad lot of characters -- especially when you see the party and where they are now.

Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
Oh I can VERY easily think of five actors who should have been nominated in place of Hill - four of them from Tinker Tailor (Strong, Firth, Hardy, Cumberbatch), and I finally did actually see Moneyball after I said I wouldn't, and while he was fine, he was no more than fine.
My friend and I are trying to zip through our nominated movies list and we saw a double-header of The Iron Lady and Albert Nobbs yesterday. The latter was pretty good, though not great, but Iron Lady was baaaaaad. Embarrassingly bad. If Meryl gets her third Oscar for this movie it will be ridiculous, because not only were the writing and directing bad enough to drag down her performance, but I could swear I heard her Julia Child voice come through in some scenes.

Oh I agree with you regarding TTSS -- the acting roster on that was top notch. But out of the bunch, Oldman and Strong really resonated with me personally. Why it wasn't nominated for best picture, I'll never know.

Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
Maybe the slow pacing of it put people off, I dunno. I thought it was a much better movie than 5 of the 6 Best Picture nominees I've seen, and loved it as much as I loved The Artist.

Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
I wonder if it was the pacing. And admittedly the narrative style may have thrown some people off. I've seen complaints that it was too slow and hard to follow. But I could follow it fine. For some reason, it reminded me of the penultimate episodes of The Sopranos, where they play with the timeline and narrative styles.
Which is probably why I adored it so much. The ending montage also was fantastic for me.

I really enjoyed The Vow more than I wanted to. Channing Tatum brought so much heart to his role, and I'll admit that he always looks awful in film trailers, so I was expecting nothing but flat line deliveries from him. The soundtrack was great, and I actually squeed out loud when Lykke Li played over one scene. It was kinda embarrassing how geeked I got. Also, it's completely unfair for Rachel McAdams to be look utterly gorgeous in a Cubs hoodie with her hair in a plain ponytail. Completely. Unfair.

I took the Shrewette and a friend to see The Secret World of Arrietty. It wasn't an action-packed movie by today's standards, but it had a compelling storyline and lovely animation. The kids and I really enjoyed it, and they've been "playing Borrowers" ever since.

We saw The Secret World of Arietty today, too. It was lovely, much better than Ponyo I thought. The cat was especially amusing.

I've found Channing Tatum a billion times more endearing since someone linked his crazy Esquire interview back on the old site so he's actually the draw for me in this one. I wish that it was someone besides Rachel McAdams playing opposite him because she gets on my nerves, especially in this type of role.

Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
I've adored her since Mean Girls and always found him as little more than blah, but he totally sold the part in that movie! Of course, I had such low expectations of him that it would've been really horrific if he somehow underwhelmed me, but really, my hat's off to him on showing such vulnerability in the film. I thought he really was excellent!

Chronicle was intense. It was surprisingly good and very true-to-teenage boy life. You know, if your teen-aged boy suddenly developed super-powers.

Me too. I actually thought he was really great in Haywire. Of course, the majority of the time, he was trying to kick Gina Carano's ass, but even when he wasn't, I thought he was good.
I enjoyed The Vow, but the whole first half of the movie, all I could think was Look at Those Fucking Hipsters.

Yeah, the first half absolutely screamed "hipster love story," which made me think of 500 Days of Summer. It was really cute but also cheesy as all get out.

Wanderlust was a lot of fun, especially if one had been a fan of The State back in the day. Worth it for the matinee.
Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
I really want to see this, because I am a total State fan-girl, but the promos were not inspiring. So I'm glad to hear this.RiverThames wrote:Wanderlust was a lot of fun, especially if one had been a fan of The State back in the day. Worth it for the matinee.

We saw Hugo over the weekend, which was good, but I found it to be kind of long. The sets and CGI were beautiful though.
Re: Now Playing At a Theater Near You
Finally got to see The Muppets - it only opened here the other week. I enjoyed it so so much! The songs - Camilla & the Chickens doing "Forget You"? I chair danced and I did not care! - to Miss Piggy being awesome and then they sang "Rainbow Connection". I may have gotten teary eyed when Walter did his whistling solo. *sniffle*
There were a few kids in the cinema when we went to see it and there was a little girl sitting in front of us with her mother who got so into the film that at the end when it seemed all was lost, she shrieked "MUPPETS! NOOO!! DOOO SOMETHING!!!" Hee!

My Ghibli-obsessed household went to see The Secret World of Arrietty this weekend. Charming! I was a huge Borrowers nut as a kid...I will have to dig through my book boxes and see if I still have a copy, because my boyfriend never read it.
