The full song.

I really like it. The most telling thing about it is that my mom, in another room, called up, "That sounds like James Bond." It really does evoke Goldfinger in all the best ways.

I hope the movie is as good as the song! Adele's voice was made for a James Bond anthem.

Empire review of Skyfall.

Spoiler alert: it is a favourable one. This makes me very happy because I have to take my mother to see it for her birthday and if it were not good, somehow it could be my fault because she is quite crazy when it comes to James Bond.

Went to a preview screening this afternoon after work. No spoilers, but it is very good indeed. I can't think of anything about it that I didn't like (and pretty much loved every member of the cast) and will definitely be watching it again on the big screen as soon as the initial rush of people this weekend has passed.

I'm going to see it on Friday morning and I cannot wait!! My mother has rearranged her whole day in order to go see it with me. It's amazing how quickly we get shit done when there's a film we want to see.

Your mother will definitely enjoy it. Actually one small non spoiler for you - Ben Whishaw was as adorable as a tiny puppy.

I don't really recall much of Casino Royale (barring Daniel in those itty bitty trunks) and never saw it more than once, whereas I already want to watch Skyfall again.

Watching Moonraker. Going through all the Bond movies Netflix has available for streaming - which doesn't include any of the truly great ones (though, as always, I think The Living Daylights is unfairly maligned).

This movie sucks so hard, but it does make for something entertaining to laugh at while I fold laundry and clean house.

I am reminded that the opening titles used to be done by Maurice Binder. So would it be fair to say that Bond movies used to have "Binders full of women"?

So I went to see Skyfall this morning. God, what a rubbish film. Bad acting, bad set pieces, the plot was just ridiculous. Seriously, Sam Mendes, what happened? You used to be good at your job.

And that is the kind of thing I won't be saying because it was really good and very enjoyable. There are some nice throwbacks to the past without them being all in your face about the 50th anniversary.
epudom does not lie. Ben Whishaw is indeed as adorable as a tiny puppy and I say this as someone who never really bothers that much about him.

I don't know if I'd think it was as good as Casino Royale (which I have seen umpteen times as it's one of the films I put on in the background when doing stuff and end up sitting watching it until the end) but it's not far behind. It's hard to say without being super spoilery.

It's definitely worth a second viewing at the cinema, which I'll be doing once midterm is over and the kids go back to school. At this morning's show, a school group arrived (don't ask me how Bond warrants a school outing) and the ten of us already in the screen kinda looked at one another with varying expressions of WTF and Oh Sweet Baby Jeebus, preserve us on our faces. They weren't that bad but I had to hush a few of them and one of the teachers didn't seem all that bothered about the talking around her. So next time I see it, I don't want chatty teenagers in there who think they're at home and can comment all the way through, thanks very much. I hate badly chaperoned groups anyway from when I worked in the cinema and these days I warn the Guides to sit quiet or else.
Now if you'll excuse me, I think I hear some kids on my lawn playing rock music.

I saw it last night, and for me I think it just pipped Casino Royale. And I love Casino Royale. The opening sequence was amazing, and the closing sequence was also amazing in a completely different way. What a great Bond film.

Spoiler:
Admittedly, I was a bit surprised to discover Bond had been raised on the set of The Woman in Black, but it sure was hugely atmospheric. Especially during the final chase when the house was blazing and the moor was glowing. I hope Mendes returns just so we get more scenery porn like that again.

Someone told me there was a shock twist at the end, so of course I spent the entire movie trying to guess what it was. I was pretty sure it was 'M dies' when another shady senior government figure played by a thespian type happened to turn up, conveniently with a name beginning with the letter in question.

All the actors were great (except maybe the woman playing Severine? But she was jaw droppingly gorgeous so I give her a pass, so shallow) but Javier Bardem was so fabulously creepy that he stole the show a bit for me.

That was the most fun I've had at the cinema in ages. I saw it in a completely packed theatre and we were all clapping and cheering the whole way through. Beautifully shot, acted and directed, and managed to feel very Bond while simultaneously rounding out all of the characters and making the whole film feel more "real-life" than any part of the series so far. Plus, I'm still humming the Adele theme a day later, which is an improvement on the last few.

Spoiler:
M made the best Bond girl in ages and I'm glad there was so much focus on her, and the relationships she has with Bond. For the first hour or so, it might as well have been a film about M with a bit of Bond running around in the background, and I am 100% OK with that. I would've liked for her to have been the one get rid of Silva, but I suppose this is still a Bond film. Sorry to see Judi Dench go (I was gutted about her death, and wasn't expecting it at all - I was sure that the old family retainer was going to get it, not M!) but Ralph Fiennes should be a pretty good replacement. Bardem, Whishaw and Harris were all fab too, I think it was the best-cast Bond film for a long time.

It also looked so good. That fight with the assassin in the office block in Shanghai was beautifully choreographed and shot, and the Scottish scenery porn was superb.
Definitely seeing that again this weekend.

God DAMN, that was mighty fun and pretty to look at. Plus seeing it with a British audience added to the hilarity in certain scenes. It was a cultural experience no doubt.
I loved some of the themes of consequences for one's actions, the deals people make (sometimes with themselves) and how it plays out and can come back to haunt you. It was fascinating. The opening sequence was filmed where my in laws went on holiday not too long ago, and they said the place was all about James Bond.
Also Daniel Craig HOW DO YOU LOOK SO FLIPPING SEXY IN EVERY SINGLE THING YOU WEAR? This is like some kind of hard science question. HOW? Dark magic?

Re: James Bond Series

Post  laddical on Thu Nov 08, 2012 8:29 am

James Bond Rises was excellent. Loved it start to finish. Especially the Shanghai fight. It was like an extra Bond Titles Sequence in the middle of the movie. And the actual Bond Title Sequence was also great, even if it still loses out to Casino Royale. The movie as a whole, though, comes in to a solid tie with that one for my favorite film in the series. I guess I'm just easy when it comes to guard changes in pop culture phenomena. I liked Ten on Doctor Who, but I love Eleven. I loved Brosnan (even if I didn't exactly love his movies), but now my favorite Bond is Craig. I guess whatever's "it" now is my thing.

The Scottish moors made for some excellent scenery, but I couldn't help thinking how dreary and ugly it looked. Which works well for the psychological space of the movie at that point but I was a little bit shocked when I realized
Spoiler:
"Oh, so this is where we're ending it, huh?" It just felt like such a strange place for a Bond finale.

Gotta say that I loved the return of
Spoiler:
the familiar padded door - and Moneypenny.
Craig's come right round full circle and it really is "anything goes" for the next movie. Wonder if we'll re-visit Quantum. I always preferred it when Bond had an enemy organization that wasn't KGB.

I wiki'd Bill Tanner, because I honestly couldn't remember if he'd appeared in the movies prior to Brosnan's era. It appears he was in The Man With the Golden Gun, but unnamed, and was used in M's stead for For Your Eyes Only after Bernard Lee's death. I always liked Tanner in the novels, the way he and Bond got on in a way that got transferred to Felix Leiter for the movies, so I'm glad to see that they seem to have settled on keeping him around. One interesting tidbit learned in the wiki'ing - Rory Kinnear, who played Tanner in this and QoS, is the godson of Dame Judi's late husband. That's a nice little touch.

YEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!

I still like Casino Royale the best but this was great.

Craig is not Bond is still around. Karl Rove would tell those guys to give up the ghost.

The photography was amazing again.

I still don't care for the gunbarrel at the end of the movie, but the opening shot was a decent substitute.

Daniel Craig has done for the Bond role what I hoping Sean Bean could have done with it when I was stumping for him. At this point I don't think there's any debate left if Craig is the best Bond since Sean Connery, someday there might be an argument about who is the best Bond.

I've just come home from seeing Skyfall. I didn't much like it. The opening sequence was great, some of the shots were lovely, Craig looked very good in his suits. I liked new Little Boy Q, who was adorable. Mostly it felt flat and disjointed, the pacing, dialogue, plot. I didn't think Javier's villain was very scary (but I know he can do creepy villains - see No Country for Old Men - eek!). Please don't hate me.
