That was my reaction; either that or the upholstery on grandmother's sofa.
I thought Emily Van Camp looked fantastic, and I don't even watch her show.
E! really hit a new low in red carpet coverage with the ManiCam. Is this really what our culture has come to?
I'd use "culture" in quotation marks in reference to the ManiCam. That was just sad.
The Emmys are fast becoming my least favorite of the various award shows.
ETA: We decided that the drinking game for yesterday's event was to drink every time someone used the word "amazing." Most people wouldn't have made it past the red carpet show.

Re: Celebrity Fashion
We were going to have a drinking game every time someone mentioned the heat. It's regularly 110 here, you are actors that get paid to wear millions of dollars in jewels and couture dresses. Suck it up or have some poor PA bring one of those little fans. I think Seacrest sucked at this gig, but I have to say I found Laura Spencer and the cute tall guy from GMA to be my new favorites. I still miss Joan though. E bring her back STAT!

Re: Celebrity Fashion
A lot of the looks I saw were just 'meh', been there/done that. Like Sophia Vergera - she's worn this type of dress on just about every red carpet I've seen her on. I mean, the colour here is gorgeous and it fits her like whoa but that's her schtick on the RC. Same with Heidi Klum.
Christina Hendricks seemed to be doing better recently but she took a few steps back with this number. The belt is terrible, the non-colour is terrible, and she looks uncomfortable in it.
Tina Fey looked wonderful (that rich purple was gorgeous, and the style itself suited her to a tee). I'm also in the camp of really loving Nicole Kidman's dress. The ice blue/white combo was so striking, plus it just looked like a light and cool dress.
Another unpopular opinion is that I loved January Jones's dress. I did a little gasp when I saw it - it just looked so interesting and fun, even if it was all black. Not as crazy about what was going on above her neck but at least she committed to the goth-ish look (I actually didn't even recognize her until I saw the caption. In smaller pictures she looked like that blonde cheerleader from Glee.)
My other favourite dress was Hayden's - it was a standout to me from their Spring collection. Normally Marchesa makes me stabby so I'm surprised I even checked out the pictures from the collection. I love the whimsical and soft sheer fabric wrapped around it, and the way the shades of blue are layered by the wrapping. But I wasn't crazy about it on her, per se - my second reaction (after squeeing when seeing the dress) was that it just didn't seem to suit her frame. I tend to agree with other comments that it's meant more for someone taller. But the colour looked lovely on her, and she clearly enjoyed wearing it, so I can't be too critical about it, heh.

Re: Celebrity Fashion
Yeah I thought Hayden's dress was GORGEOUS and fit her and weirdly did not age her, and I can't believe it's Marchesa which I typically hate. Lucy Liu and Ginnifer Goodwin were my other stand outs.

Is that unpopular? That's crazy. The dress was gorgeous, I thought. The hair and makeup, not so much. I also loved Nicole Kidman, Kerry Washington, Lucy Liu, Amy Poehler and Tina Fey.
I hated Heidi Klum's dress -- it was so tacky with both the plunging neckline and the two high slits and I loathe the color seafoam.

I know, right? She's crazy gorgeous anyway but I thought she looked particularly stunning.
In an interesting juxtaposition, right before watching E!'s red carpet coverage I finally watched the documentary Bill Cunningham New York about the legendary NY Times style photographer (which, if you haven't seen it yet, run, do not walk, to your Netflix queue. It's fabulous). The two types of fashion coverage could not be more different. Bill Cunningham is interested only in style and not at all in fame and/or money. In one scene, they showed him at Paris fashion week and everyone was swarming Catherine Deneuve and when the filmmaker asked him why he wasn't also taking her picture, he replied, "Because she's not wearing anything interesting." Contrast that with Giuliana Rancic and the ManiCam.

I watched E! out of habit, but the cute tall guy from GMA - Josh Elliot - is absolutely my favorite thing about morning TV (except Robin Roberts, obvs, but that goes without saying). I'm annoyed at myself for missing his dreamy ass in a tux.

We watched both E! and ABC back and forth thanks to Tivo but my favorite part of any interview was the look on Stephen Colbert's wife face when Josh Elliot was wanting to geek out with his fellow Tolkien fan. She looked like they might break out into Elvish at any moment.

Yoko Ono has created the greatest line of men's fashions ever. EVER. The models uniformly look like they wish they were dead.

Re: Celebrity Fashion
The only thing I could think when looking at that is where the hell do they all stand waiting to get onstage? Some of those costumes have some serious wingspan.
I don't know why but I love Tanzania's bizarro outfit and the USA one isn't bad. Best comment goes to Nicaragua but it could have been better. EAT SHIT URUGUAY, IT'S CARROT!

As a person of Italian descent, I am so sad right now. That lame flag costume is a disgrace to our heritage. We can do over-the-top tacky as well as anyone!
"I cannot believe I agreed to wear a fucking coral reef on my head in front of so many cameras."
Miss Germany kind of looks like Kristen Stewart.

Denmark is clearly sad because the sea-witch didn't get her legs in time for the contest.

I'm not too happy with my ancestors either. All Poland did was take grandma's lace tablecloth and made it into a dress and stuck an Easter wreath on her head.

Faves from last night? I thought Lucy Liu shut it down. That is some Marie Antoinette realness right there.

Liu was my favorite also.

Despite what that link says about not equating florals with upholstery, I am pretty sure I had that comforter at some point in junior high. *shrugs* It was a really pretty comforter, though.
I loved Julia Louis-Dreyfus's dress the most, I think.

Re: Celebrity Fashion
I totally agree with the anti-boring speech, hate a boring red carpet: understated and classic is for real people, or for celebrities to wear every day. On a red carpet, I want something more interesting. That said, Lucy Liu's dress didn't work for me, though usually I love her style. I didn't watch last night, am going through photos this morning, but my favorites so far are Naomi Watts and Kelly Osbourne (I think it's the purple hair and smile more than the dress) and Michelle Dockery. Also liked Helen Mirren and Sienna Miller and Nicole Ritchie.
