The Works of Fiona Apple
Well, tickets for a small show that she's playing here just went on sale at 12:00, and by about 12:00:05 they were sold out. Bummer. I have been exercising my captcha-typing skills, just in case somebody drops some they were holding, but by now I think that ship has sailed. However, a friend of mine reports that her record label says there will DEFINITELY be a new album in 2012. Since I absolutely adore her, that is terrific news. So, here is a thread in case we would like to discuss her.
ETA: And I know I'm naive about these sorts of things, but there are now 216 tickets for that show for sale on StubHub, starting at $102 (the original price was $40). I was at peace with not going, but I am ready to FUCKING KILL some scalpers right about now. Goddamnit.

Wow, that sucks. The venue apparently doesn't have a max on tickets purchased? Seems very naive in this day and age.
Anyway, I like her! Criminal is one of my go-to karaoke songs! She does space the albums way out, doesn't she? I hope the new one is good. And I hope you score a ticket to the show at a reasonable price. Really, I think you should call the venue and point out that someone is scalping the hell out of the show - they probably already know, but they do sound rather clueless.

The upcoming album has a name. It's no When the Pawn... extravagance, but still quite the mouthful.

Fiona is one of those artists I don't personally care for, but I love her music. I find her personality grating, but I am also impressed by the fact that she released Tidal when she was only 19, and it still holds up today. I love her raw, bluesy voice, and it was a nice change of pace at a time when other young, female artists were releasing albums like Baby...One More Time (not that I dislike Britney Spears, but Fiona gave us substance.)
I just wish she hadn't gone crazy at the VMA's. I didn't disagree with what she was saying, but she came off like a spoiled brat, ranting against MTV while accepting an award from MTV. That was years ago, though, and she has probably mellowed out since then.

Since that was fifteen years ago and she was nineteen years old, I think it's a safe bet. I mean, I'm sure she's still slightly crazy - I'd be disappointed if she wasn't - but the fifteen years between age nineteen and age thirty-four are sort of major ones.
I really hope the new album actually does come out this year. I LOVE Extraordinary Machine and can't wait to see what comes next.

I cannot wait and hope that it's a huge success and she tours. It might be too much to hope she tours here, but I must at least see her perform once in my life.

Instant Monkeys (and other Fiona fans), did you see you have a second shot at Fiona? New North American tour dates announced.
I actually lucked out and saw the show in Boston. She was fantastic but the crowd was full of people talking through the show, which I just don't get. It's not like it was an easy ticket to get, so why did you come to not listen? There was a gaggle of girls next to me who spent the entire show shouting a conversation at each other about their day that they could have had at Starbucks. One of them literally had her back to the stage for half the concert so as to better address the rest of them. I finally went over to them and asked if they could keep it down since the rest of us were, you know, trying to see Fiona Apple perform for the first time in a decade and they just shrieked some more and cackled and spent the rest of the show "dancing" into my friend. While talking loudly.
Anyway, next venue looks like it might be an improvement!

OMGGGGGGG that's annoying. I SERIOUSLY don't understand people who treat a concert as like, a backdrop to their night out. If you just want to drink and fuck around with your friends all night, just go to a bar or something. If nothing else, A CONCERT IS EXPENSIVE. Are you all millionaires? Well, I'm not a millionaire, and I actually really like the musician I paid to see, so SHUT UP.choubetcha wrote:Instant Monkeys (and other Fiona fans), did you see you have a second shot at Fiona? I did see that announcement, and I am psyched!! I don't know if I can spend the money, but we'll see. I can't wait for the album.
I'm so glad you got to go and had fun! (except for the annoying girls)

Aw, she is not coming to my city. Sad. I might try to swing Toronto though....
ETA: I just texted my boyfriend (also a huge fan of hers) and he was like WE ARE GOING. So, ooh we will have to try to get tickets!!!

Re: The Works of Fiona Apple
I apologize for the double post, but the first single ("Every Single Night") from her new album was posted on Gawker today.
I wasn't sure I liked it at first, but it is growing on me. I feel like she is pushing her comfort limits with her voice, which is interesting.

I saw it posted on Tumblr and listened. I quite like it! It's a little different, and I agree -- she seems to trying different vocal ... stylings (I don't know technical terms!).

We just got our tickets for the Boston show in the mail - I ended up calling in to get them, because the website sale was such a cluster, and I wasn't about to go through the Garbage fiasco again. I knew we were in the orchestra, but I had no idea where. Yeah, third row, in the orchestra pit. Woohoo!
