I will never understand why people immediately assume that a new thread created for a celeb means that they've died - especially when we've only just gotten this forum running.
Anyway, his memoir Life Itself is quite charming. A little meandering and occasionally not tremendously interesting but overall quite delightful. I especially liked reading his chapters on Gene Siskel. And his kinda crush on Oprah back in the day.

Well in Roger's case he has been coping with a serious health issue for the last few years.I think it's understandable to worry a new thread might have something to do with news about that health status. Same with any celebrity whose been otherwise out of the spotlight but suddenly has a thread.

I still love Roger and the way he handled the whole At the Movies drama, even if I long ago started to part ways with his critical pov.

I saw that yesterday on his Facebook. His blog post said that their love letters were locked up in some computer file that he couldn't access anymore. If this blog post isn't a love letter to Chaz, I don't know what is.

Is Roger the last of the old-school critics? The ones who used to actually be able to make a movie based on his recommendation? I remember reading an interview with the directors of Hoop Dreams and they basically gave Siskel & Ebert credit for bringing an audience to their movie. The producers had sent them a copy of the film hoping they'd get a small mention in a column and then got a phone call from the show saying they were going to talk about it on TV. The producers were over the moon because they figured it was going to be a good review. They didn't think S&E would put them on the show just to slam their movie because they were so small time. They watched the show and the reviews were beyond anything they could dream of. I still remember that episode because Siskel & Ebert were so unabashedly enthusiastic about the movie and couldn't stop saying nice things about it. Normally, they were a bit more tempered when they loved a movie. But with Hoop Dreams, they just let themselves be the film lovers they were and gushed like fangirls.

Yeah, I can't think of any modern critic with that sort of impact. Now it's all about Rotten Tomatoes.

A bit more info from Roger himself (on his blog):

A funny thing happened on the way to the Oscars. Not to the Oscars. To me. From where it stands right now, I haven't seen and will not be able to seen a few films that are widely considered as leading best picture contenders, including "Django Unchained" and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey." That disappoints me. I may release a revised list later.

Earlier this month, I sustained a hairline fracture of my left hip. I didn't fall. I didn't break it. It just sort of ... happened to itself. Most of the time, it causes me no pain. But my left leg won't bear any weight, nor can I walk on it. It has nothing to do with cancer. It's plain bad luck.

That's the bad news. The worse news is that medications have impaired my ability to write. Because there is curiosity about my list, I present this very abbreviated piece, with the promise I will later revise it, better written, as my ability restores itself.

Ugh. That was what happened with his jaw too. At least the spelling oddities are just the medication.
