What's probably the biggest problem is, in the writing/directing, in that their collective sense of tension and pacing is just non-existent.

What I remember about the first season is so many scenes of the crew sitting in the cafeteria eating. Maybe I've just exaggerated in my head, but there was a lot of mundane things going on. There never seemed to be much at stake.

See, the mundane was something I liked, and I thought Enterprise handled that better than TNG or Voyager. I could watch, say, Hoshi and Phlox chat in Denobulan all day long.

Has anyone been following the DS9 retrospective recaps over on AV Club? They are pretty damn good. But what's really freaking amazing is a regular commenter by the name of "Rapping Jake Sisko". OH MY GOD THE BRILLIANCE.

Why don't you be my deputy, whatcha say, Quark?
Odo needs an ally while he's breaking in the Navarch
The Ferengi wants incentive that's a little more monetary
While Kira's sweatin', settin' stones at the monastery
She's not used to being useless, rather die with her boots on
Just then Winn butts in sportin' a hat by Jorn Utzon

He's taken by Grilka and Tumek- I think I met that guy before-
To come with them to Qo'noS and help them beat D'Ghor
Quark uncovers the brother's scheme, it's one without honor
D'Ghor responds with a challenge, and Quark's sure he's a goner.
But when he'd kill an unarmed coward, Gowron is shocked
D'Ghor's cast out of the Council as a dishonorable petaQ
Quark's counting latinum in the bar, back to his old habits
Recounts the story for Rom just like Lenny and the rabbits.

I was looking for some streaming escapism on Netflix the other night, and hit upon the idea of rewatching TNG.

"Encounter at Far Point" is really, really, not very good, is it?

I'm not sure I can go on - I think I'd rather leave my positive memories intact.

I rewatched some of TNG recently. The first two seasons or so are very rough. Like the oil spill that eats Tasha Yar. But the later seasons held up better than I expected. And some stuff was still quite strong - like the Borg arc with Locutus.

I will say watching as an adult made me realize that as a kid, I thought Picard was, like, my grandpa's age (he was not). And I had little interest in Riker and loved Wesley. And now I realize how attractive and awesome both Picard and Riker are and how poorly written all the Wesley stuff is when you're not 8.

A TNG rewatch is best done selectively.

I'm doing a sort-of selective DS9 rewatch right now, inspired by the AV Club reviews (which are on Season four right now). That show holds up pretty damn well.

I think per the Star Trek encyclopedia, Picard is *supposed* to be 59 when the series starts, though I believe Patrick Stewart was 47 at the time.

Yeah, Patrick Stewart was barely older than my dad. I think the baldness contributed.

I did a ds9 rewatch a few years ago, and other than the supernatural bullshit (which I hated) in the final season, it held up very well.

Has anyone else heard that Michael Dorn is trying to get a series started revolving around "Captain Worf"?

I remember back when Enterprise was starting up, there was an attempt in the fandom to get a real grass-roots movement behind a "Captain Sulu/ Excelsior" series. There was a lot of bluster and talk about this being what the fans REALLY wanted, and they would show up en masse at Paramount to show them the HUGE support it had.

About 19 people showed up.

Hahahaha, yes, the Full Riker, I totally forgot it was called that.

I just google imaged that, since I couldn't find one of the full-on 175-degree angle before, and I didn't get much, but I did find this.

Also I saw that Jonathan Frakes's Twitter is @jonathansfrakes, and I was like "But what is the S for? His middle name is Bo." Then I remembered that my sister and I made that up and probably his middle name isn't really Bo, just like Brent Spiner's middle name probably isn't really Trent and Wil Wheaton's probably isn't really Bil. God, we were such weird kids.

No judging! I spent junior high writing Q-resurrects-Tasha fanfic; I got no room to judge.

But it is weird.

"But what is the S for? His middle name is Bo."

It's not an S. On his planet it means "Magnificent Beard".

That's sooooooo nerdy. I only spent hours and hours in junior high writing Picard/Crusher fanfic and stories about the adventures of Wesley Crusher. And making Star Trek paperdolls. YES I MADE STAR TREK PAPERDOLLS, WITH CLOTHES.

stories about the adventures of Wesley Crusher

You're lucky Wil Wheaton turned out so cool, because that would just be sad in retrospect.

I'm so glad out of the billions of people on this planet I've found people who were crazier about Star Trek than me, me who WROTE A POEM ABOUT THE FINAL EPISODE THAT WAS PRINTED IN THE NEWSPAPER. It was really bad too. It featured the word "warping."
