Re: Publishing Scandals
Well, basically, there's a point in--I guess it's Midnight Sun?--where Edward narrates that he had never had Certain Feelings before. Like, never. Teenage boy for like a century; never. Dudely things that happen whether dudes want them to happen or not, because biology: nope.
Also, in the course of recapping, I realized that after Bella's officially married/vampired and Edward kisses her "like he'd never kissed her before," she means "with tongue." So it was three and a half books of lip-mashing before that. Maybe Stephenie Meyer just wants to move on to a new stage of her life where people actually get to second base once in a while.
Fun fact: Summit Entertainment is ALSO distributing Ender's Game. Basically, they're not having such a great week.

See, I always assumed that Tanya probably tried to jump on that. I mean, I doubt she got anywhere, but she seemed industrious enough to give it a shot during one of his trips to Alaska.

I recommended Ender's Game to a friend today, and had to stress over and over again that the author was a misogynistic homophobe, and you had to ignore that because the book was actually really good.

Re: Publishing Scandals
I'm just grinning merrily at the remembrance of when The Host came out and a friend of hers said about how she wasn't a one hit wonder like that hack JK Rowling, ha ha ha, they were just joking of course, ha ha.
She may well look back now on Twilight and think WTF was that all about and wish she had the chance to go over the books and change stuff that grates on her, but it's not fair to the people who bought her books and really liked them and helped her have the lifestyle she has now to trash the books. Nor is it smart business wise.

Warrior Princess by Mindy Budgor: outdoing The Onion
The scandal is that this happened at all and it got published:
The scandal is that this happened at all and it got published:
Warrior Princess! Inspiring new book reveals how a fashionista from Santa Barbara swapped Gucci for goat’s blood to become the first female Maasai fighter
— Mindy Budgor, 32, from California, left her comfortable life behind to live with a Kenyan tribe for three months
— Her book tells how she had to ‘learn the ways of the lion’ including drinking goat blood and throwing a spear
— Mindy’s determination paid off and she was the first woman accepted to be a ‘moran’ — a Maasai warrior — opening the door for other females
— But she never went without her Chanel Red Dragon lipstick to carry her through the hard times

I saw an interview with the author a few weeks ago on a book review segment on BBC News, and she came across as a hybrid of Goldie Hawn in Private Benjamin and a Valley Girl. Whilst her uptalking annoyed me, I don't recall her coming across that badly, just vaguely privileged but trying to expand her worldview.
The publicity for the book might not be going for that angle though.

Because who needs Out of Africa or Shadows on the Grass when you can have She-Ra, Princess of Power over here? I need to barf, too, and not because I'm a blood-drinker.

Re: Publishing Scandals
YOU GUYS, we got a juicy one! "Author" Elizabeth Nelson had a author bio pic that she lifted from a Revlon hair extensions ad. THEN it turned out that she'd plagiarized book descriptions from a bunch of other authors. She started deleting facebook comments. Then she deleted her Facebook altogether.
@einfach_mich @EvilWylie I think it's time we make a Catfish category for authors.
@EvilWylie Copying and pasting takes time, yo. RT @nelsonromance: My latest story coming soon! Stay tuned as it will be here any day.

From her Amazon profile:
Interlace? "Tickle your fancy?" She sounds about 107.Elizabeth Nelson is a romance writer who loves to interlace reality and love with suspense and thrill. Her stories will tickle your fancy and leave you wanting more.

Re: Publishing Scandals
Why would you plagiarize an author bio? Can you not be bothered to make up 2 sentences about yourself? That doesn't really inspire confidence that her actual book is not plagiarized.

Can we talk about how bizarre this story is? I've hated Perez Hilton for a looooong time, but I really thought he had better things to do than create sock accounts to get back at Lady Gaga. Yet all signs point to him being involved in this in some way.

Re: Publishing Scandals
Wait, how are you getting "all signs point to Perez"? Nothing on the Buzzfeed link pointed to him at all. It spent a long time making the case that there are a bunch of sockpuppet accounts at the Examiner, so I'll grant there's something weird going on here, but the only thing on Perez is at the very end and boils down to "there are some rumors it's him." The link was down so I can't see what those rumors are.

Re: Publishing Scandals
I probably overstated the case because it was 2 am and couldn't sleep, but Bill Werde's post implies that it is, and Perez's continual back and forth conversation with Angela Cheng on twitter is like a page from sockpuppetry 101. The sad thing is how many legitimate media outlets are taking stories written in the Examiner as fact, when they don't even seem to employ real people.

Not quite a scandal as such, but a fun bit of lateral thinking. LJ Smith got booted from her Vampire Diaries stories at some point, so now someone pointed her towards doing published Vampire Diaries fanfic from that Amazon program. I've never watched or read Vampire Diaries, but I appreciate cleverness. However, she needs to read her contracts more closely.

Re: Publishing Scandals
Has anyone else been following the Amazon-Hachette fight?
It's true I have a bias towards Hachette because I worked there for a few months (haven't spoken to anyone I might still know there about this fight, though), but this just seems like 2 large corporations fighting for a bigger piece of the rapidly changing, but struggling publishing industry. I don't know which solution is ultimately better for the consumer. If Amazon wins (and they probably will, because they are Amazon), it may mean temporarily lower prices on e-books for consumers, but I don't fool myself in thinking that Amazon has any great love for the consumer, it's just assembling its power to steamroll all other competitors.

I stopped using Amazon several years ago, and I also hate monopolies. So I'm hoping, but not expecting, Hachette to win.

You want a scandal? YOU WANT A SCANDAL?
Someone actually agreed to publish this thing!
Man, that RiverThames guy has to have something on someone.
But seriously, congrats, RT. Can't wait to pick up a copy!

Re: Publishing Scandals
You know that 'don't judge a book by its cover' etc etc? I totally initially judge books by their covers - it's what you have to go with (along with the title) when you're browsing at the book store for something new and unknown. That is a most excellent cover, and would make me pick it up to read the dust jacket. Congrats!
