Musicals

Aaron Tveit is gonna be Enjolras in the Les Mis movie. So that's good news, I think.

Musical Nerd Unpopular Rant
Oh,Les Miserables.
Giving Eponine what was Fantine's big song (and the show's big song) seems like a miscalculation to me.
Why is 'Ponine singing it when she had her own number? Is "L'air de la Misere" untranslatable to English?

I so wish that we'd gotten a full cast recording for the Palais Des Sports production. The concept album cuts out most of the show, which is a shame. Because to me,Cameron Mackintosh completely misunderstood Boublil and Schoenberg's show and Victor Hugo.

I've only ever seen/heard the English language version of "Les Miserables", so is moving "I Dreamed a Dream" to Eponine instead of Fantine for the new movie? Or did that happen in the French to English translation years ago? As far as the upcoming English-language movie goes, that change doesn't work at all so I hope it's just a rumour. The situation Fantine is singing about in her song doesn't apply to Eponine's character at all. Eponine's "On My Own" is all about her unrequited love for Marius and her unhappy lonely life, whereas "I Dreamed a Dream" tells the story of Fantine's betrayal and abandonment by the father of her illegitimate child.

I'm disappointed in the Taylor Swift casting. And the Russell Crowe casting. I read somewhere that they're writing a new song for the movie, too. I know that's standard practice for musicals as far back as sound itself, but I've never really liked it. Sometimes they fit better than others: I always fast-forward through "Something Good" in The Sound of Music" (though I think "I Have Confidence" was also written just for the movie, and I like that one fine).

I dunno, B&S were responsible for overblowing Eponine's part, not Cam Mac. She was already a super selfless waif with a much larger part than the story asked for in the original Paris show. As for Eponine getting the tune of "L'air de la misere" instead of Fantine, I just think they chose that for stylistic reasons.

Yeah, in the original show in Paris in 1980, before Cameron Mackintosh got involved, Fantine sang two songs, one was "I Dreamed a Dream" and the other was called "L'air de la misere", and it was to the tune of "On My Own" (mostly). Eponine also had two solos. What happened probably was they decided that was too many solos and gave the tune of one of Fantine's songs to Eponine, I suppose because (imo) both Eponine's songs were rather dull sounding.

You are right about B and S's version of Eponine. I think Swift might be the perfect choice after all. Sweet, pretty, and Mary Sue-ish. Listening to her live? She does remind me vocally of the original French production's Eponine. Unlike the belters they usually cast since Frances Ruffelle.

Meanwhile,I've only just discovered Blood Brothers. Oh man. I love it.

I should start lighting candles in front of pictures of Lucy Hale,Evan Rachel Wood, and sigh..Lea Michele.

It's official. I'm obsessed with Le roi Soleil. I wonder what the chances are of the RSC turning this French rock arena musical into an international hit?

Yay! I'm still not sure on some of the other casting, but I'm so glad they went with someone who's performed it on stage. It's a good chance to get some exposure. I'm not too fond of star-studded musicals anyway, though now that I say that I realize that 3/4 of Hollywood musicals are just that and I've seen plenty. Something along the lines of The Sound of Music or Hairspray is about right: two or three big names to satisfy the studios and the rest just good performers. I've never seen the 25th anniversary Les Mis special, mostly because I have the 10th and love it so didn't see the point of seeing it again. I'll have to check it out.

I think the choice is okay. The thought of many affronted starlets who might have wanted the part amuses me though.

I'm way happier that Francis Ruffelle is going to be in it. I love her voice, and she still looks hot as hell.

The casting that makes me happiest of all is that Colm Wilkinson is going to play the Bishop. It's such a lovely way to pass the mantle. I teared up a little when I read that.

Can I pre-order the soundtrack now, please?

I also approve of the new song they're adding:

Written by the stage hit's original songwriting team of Schönberg, Alain Boublil and lyricist Herbert Kretzmer, the new number is called "Suddenly," the producer revealed.

"It's a really lovely new song," Mackintosh said by telephone from London, where the film, directed by Oscar winner Tom Hooper, is in rehearsal before shooting starts in March. "It was something that Alain and Claude-Michel came up with, after a passage in the book, which beautifully explains what happens when [Valjean] takes Cosette from the inn and looks after her. Herbie's written a lovely lyric to it, and we're all delighted how it seems to fit into the film version.

I just got back from The Addams Family, it was fun, and also very silly. And occasionally not sure what to do, but overall fun. An incredibly nerdy part of me was very excited to see Douglas Sils (Gomez) since I love the Scarlet Pimpernel and never got to see it.

I'm going to say no, because Christina Ricci was the best Wednesday. But she was good and had a great voice.

20th Century Fox may be following Disney's footsteps again. Looks as if Anastasia might be making it to the stage eventually.

I'm going to see Evita around Christmas, and couldn't be more excited. Has anyone seen it yet? Martin's Che hasn't really impressed me, he seems to fade into the background when Elena Roger is singing.
