Has anyone watched this on Netflix? I'm wildly impressed with it but curious what others think.

I was a little disappointed with it. I was on a big British detectives kick a while back (Happy Valley, Scott & Bailey, Luther), and my parents recommended River as another I might enjoy, as they had really liked it. I can't even pinpoint what let me down, as I like the two main actors very much. I think I would still watch another season if they made one though.

I loved it. Stellan's performance was spectacular, drawing out so many layers to the character: his humour, awkwardness, loneliness, sadness. Stellan can do so much with the subtlest of expressions, it was a joy to watch him play the character. At times I wanted to look away because I felt so embarrassed for him. River reminded me of the book version of Wallander in that he laboured under the weight of his own doubts and depression but was, at the same time, such a good detective that he couldn't help but carry on.

The chemistry between Stellan and Nicola Walker was great as well, and the overall story of their relationship, both professional and personal, was so well played by them both.
