Re: Film Trailers
That does look incredible. And that is one hell of a cast.
Also with Benedict Cumberbatch, The Fifth Estate, the Wikileaks/Assange movie. That white hair is mega-unflattering on him, though he does seem to have put a lot of effort into the role.

Re: Film Trailers
laddical, I was coming over to say pretty much the same thing about Saving Mr. Banks. I love the shit out of Mary Poppins the movie, but I really hope they don't Disneyfy what actually happened in that relationship. The movie has real potential if they let it be interesting (and let's face it, I'll see it for the Disneyland scenes alone because OMG can you imagine going to Disneyland with Walt?) but I'm cautious about it.
The fact that it's PG-13 is encouraging, and my god, that's a hell of a cast. I hope it's good! My mother has never gotten over Disney destroying the book, as she said, so I'm hoping it's at least moderately faithful to reality so she'll see it and feel vindicated. (I saw the musical with her in New York last year and she felt it was much improved but should have ditched Supercallafragilisticexpealidocious.)

I have mixed feelings about Woody Allen, but totally want to see Blue Jasmine. Love Cate. Very interesting cast.

Don Jon. Why is this trailer adorable and not super corny?

Re: Film Trailers
For years I had a recurring nightmare very much like the Gravity trailer. There is no way I will be able to see this movie without having a full-on panic attack, but it looks amazing.

I freaked out a little seeing the Gravity trailer. However, it's a little comforting that I'm not the only one who's had nightmares like that.

I saw that Gravity trailer in IMAX 3D before Pacific Rim, and it was fucking terrifying. I basically curled up in my seat and mumbled, "nonononononononononono" over and over.

The first time I saw the trailer I said out loud, yup, I'm never going to see this movie.

Re: Film Trailers
See, I can't stop laughing at that trailer. It's suitably intense all along... and then we get that shot of Sandra spinning quietly out into the void and it completely ruins the tension for me. I don't know what it is. When I went to an advanced screening of Deep Impact a few months before it was released, there was a similar shot of Jon Favreau's character lost in space that brought the house down at a really inappropriate moment. It's been a while, but I seem to remember it was excised from the final cut, probably because of preview audience response like ours. There's just something about it.
ETA: It's the suit. After thinking about it a few more seconds, it suddenly came to me. Space suits with their big puffy limbs... it makes me think of Randy in his snowsuit, trying to get up like a turtle on its back in A Christmas Story.

For me, it's the voice work. Both Sandra and George sound like they're in a radio play. Her especially--it sounds like she's reading all those "Aaah!"s directly off a page in a sound studio. It doesn't sound real or tense, and I don't buy it. I'm hoping it works better when you're already immersed in the movie.

Alfonso Cuaron could be doing a sequel to The Room starring Miley Cyrus and I would still be so there.

Went to see The Hobbit last night and it was just one bad trailer after another. I can't even remember what most of the trailers were for, however, as soon as I realized that one was for a remake of Godzilla I burst out laughing. And the rest of the audience wasn't far behind.

Re: Film Trailers
Oh, man, the Godzilla trailer is just horrid. They waste half of it on that skydiving bit that just won't end, and by the time we get to Bryan Cranston's cry-face, I'm done... and we haven't even seen the monster yet. Honestly, the Taco Bell dog saying "Here lizard lizard lizard" in '98 was a better bit of marketing.

Not gonna lie, I can't WAIT for Godzilla reboot. So happy the monster looks similar to the original.

When I went to see 'The Hobbit' yesterday, they showed a trailer for Edge of Tomorrow and it made me really cranky. Tom Cruise needs to stop being in movies I'd like if he weren't in them.

I've lost count of how many sci-fi movies I've declined to see because of him. Seriously, is he the only actor allowed to be in big budget sci-fi now? I am cranky, too.

Re: Film Trailers
You know, I'm not normally a person who refuses to watch something just because I disagree with a person's politics, religion, criminal activity, etc. For instance, I've seen pretty much everything Roman Polanski has ever made. I was a *little* more reticent about Mel Gibson's movies, but I still watched them.
But there's something about Tom Cruise that makes me almost irrationally angry. And yes, it pisses me off that he gets hired for all these interesting projects.

Re: Film Trailers
Well, Tom Cruise is a shitty actor as well as a creepy crazy zealot, so there's that. He never brings his characters to life, so all you're left with is Tom Cruise up there on the screen. Polanski is a wretched excuse for a human being, but he makes great movies. Gibson...eh. He used to be able to act, right?

Re: Film Trailers
Disagree on every point. I think Cruise is very engaging on screen - you might just shrug that he was just playing himself, but I thought he was great as Frank Mackey in Magnolia, and when he's playing a nice(r) guy, I think he's very winning, particularly the Mission: Impossible movies and Jerry Maguire. And while I grant he can be creepy as hell in religious mode, he isn't known for violent outbursts or raping children.
That said... Edge of Tomorrow looks questionable, but that's just me, I think, not giving it the benefit of the doubt because it reminds me of Oblivion which I hated for reasons not having to do with Tom Cruise or the Emily Blunt look-a-like he was in that movie with.

Re: Film Trailers
Oh, I wasn't at all trying to argue that Cruise is as bad or worse than Polanski. Obviously raping children is a whole order of vileness beyond being a creepy cultist. (Nor was I saying that Polanski's directing achievements in any ameliorates his crimes, I really hope I didn't give that impression.) I was just saying that, in my opinion, Cruise - while sometimes charismatic on screen - displays zero depth in his acting, so I can never see the character instead of "Tom Cruise." And Tom Cruise is off-putting.
Anyway, film trailers I saw yesterday. They were all kind of lame, the only one that even halfway interested me was the one for Divergent. Which seems like kind of a Hunger Games knock-off?

Yeah, it was one of the roughly kajillion YA dystopian triliogies that came out after HG was a huge hit. I was looking forward to the movie, but then I read the third book, and, well, FLAMES. So I will probably skip it, rather than spending two hours muttering about what goes horribly wrong, heh.

Yeah, I freely admit I probably enjoy the work of many people publicly known to be violent and/or sexual abusers. Tom Cruise just icks me out in every film he's in. And he is the only guy aside from, who, Will Smith's son I guess, allowed to be in sci-fi movies now? Ugh.

Re: Film Trailers
Well, if you want a sci-fi movie made in Hollywood that isn't already a franchise or based-on-a-thing, you need star power to bolster it. And Tom Cruise and Will Smith are pretty much the only guys left who can bring that on their own. And even that is on shaky ground.
