I bet she has talked it over with her lawyers and they've decided they don't have grounds to sue or they're afraid of opening up a can of worms. Yes, this started out as a fanfic but James never made money off of that version.

I feel like the original fic was the kind that authors should sue over. Well, maybe sue is a bit extreme but "should be pissed that someone had an idea for a story but couldn't think of names for the characters or figured more people would read it if they said it was a fic of so-and-so." Cause the fic has NOTHING to do with Twilight except the names, the characters aren't even really the same. I mean, yeah, Edward of the books and Edward of the fic are both controlling, but Edward/Christian is about 10 billion times more so. I mean even when you have an alternate universe fanfic, if it's a good fic, the characters are recognizable or there's something tangible that connects it to the original material, but her fic, nada. I mean, they aren't even freaking vampires in the thing. Isn't that the WHOLE POINT of Twilight? Sexy chaste vampires?

SNL had a sketch about the book last night. It was quite funny!

WHAT IN THE ACTUAL FUCK? That shit got published? People enjoy it? That is a terribly written fanfic. I've read better erotica online. Why are people paying for that tripe?

My question is, why isn't Stephanie Myer suing?
No, it didn't get published. I was making fun of the book and wrote that line myself.

It's not all that different from the book, though.

I was watching Dateline NBC last night and they totally shoehorned in references to this book in a murder story where the husband was into BDSM.

The promos for that episode made it sound like it was going to be about 50 Shades of Grey.

Oh, god. People practice BDSM, but they are not psychotic assholes like Christian Grey, let alone murderers. Thank you, E.L. James, for putting an even heavier stigma on BDSM culture/sex. That's exactly what it needed. *eyeroll*

I just put a hold on the audiobook version of this for a patron yesterday and all I can do is wonder that someone was able to read this for professional purposes without busting a gut laughing every other page. Whoever the reader is deserves far more compensation than s/he probably got.

I saw all three books on display next to the register in the Hallmark store as I was buying Mothers' Day cards. I actually said, "Oh my lord" out loud, because. Porn. In the Hallmark store. I don't think of myself as having delicate sensibilities, but I was just not ready for that.

Oh my god, can you imagine if somebody got it for their mother? Oh no, now I have to go die of imagined secondhand embarrassment.

Are these people actually reading the book, or saying they have to just look cool? I mean, someone has to read it and go "seriously"?

One of my co-workers at the library LOVES these books. She's also the one who slips the Twilight books onto the staff recommendations shelf.

My mom downloaded it from Audible, and, assuming it's the same reader, she reports that the narrator has kind of a valley girl lilt in her voice, which makes the prose even stupider sounding. To my mom's credit, she gleefully admits that the writing is terrible, and she's been telling two of her friends about it so they can spare themselves from reading it (or can borrow it from her when she's finished -- it's very reminiscent of how everyone at my lunch table was passing around copies of Flowers in the Attic back in the day and spelling out the details for the girl who wasn't allowed to read it at home).

I don't know...way too many people I know have gotten it and then gone, OMG it's so explicit! Like--what were you expecting? Have you heard NOTHING about this book? Do people normally just grab books off the shelf without knowing anything about them?

I have friends who work in bookstores and I'd say yes, there are people who will just buy whatever the book of the moment is without bothering to read up on it. One of them had to tell a man who was going to buy it for his 12-year-old daughter that the book was about a BDSM relationship and had sexually explicit material.

I spent like half of Mother's Day brunch talking about Fifty Shades. I can't even. My mom apparently bought it, read the first couple of chapters and put it down because it was just that badly written. Hopefully I've discouraged her from picking it up again. My aunt, on the other hand, is totally revelling in it, although even she admits it's poorly written. My cousin (he just finished his first year of college) and I spent the entire discussion with our heads in our hands, trying to convince her not to keep reading. They were both quite surprised when I explained how it's fanfiction and can be accessed online, for free. My aunt hasn't gotten to anything explicit yet, so I don't know if she'll continue to love it, but I just kept telling her that I could give her good romance recommendations and she didn't need to read this dreck. (My cousin was shocked that I read romance - I'm tempted to make him read some.)

It was an entertaining discussion.

I'd actually disagree with this. I think it stays VERY close to Twilight's plot. Same tertiary characters are coupled up, same best friend who can't take no for an answer, same plot about someone stalking/kidnapping Bella/Ana because she's connected to Edward/Christian. All the character dynamics are basically the same and so are the most of the major plot beats, up to the pregnancy that Christian is less than thrilled with.

This is sort of cute in a way. Kristen Stewart is asked about it, and clearly doesn't really get what fanfic is. Hee.

2:24
Q: "But you know that it's based off your Twilight characters?"
KS: "Yeah, totally. Wait, that's true, right? That's not just something people say? Like SHE would say that's what it's based on?"

Anyway, she hasn't read it, so she's still on my good side, hee.

The cast of Snow White and the Huntsman (including Kristen Stewart) reading 50 Shades. (OH, do I love me some Josh Horowitz! Check out his other stuff, if you haven't had the pleasure, btw.)

There's something so very strange about Kristen Stewart reading -- out loud -- parts of an erotic novel written with her and Rob in mind. She seems very good-natured about it, though, so maybe she just thinks it's funny rather than squicky.

Edited to add:

TWoP trained me well, so instead of double-posting, I'll just add something else to this one: Selena Gomez and Nick Kroll Star in "50 Shades of Blue". It's so stupid it's funny, as opposed to the book, which is so stupid it's stupid.

New Yorker: "Fifty Shades of Grey" Sex Classes

Over at Babeland, a New York sex shop, the best-selling trilogy “Fifty Shades of Grey” has shifted from erotic fiction to how-to guide. On a recent Friday, a hundred or so women, four men, and one Chihuahua crowded into the SoHo store for a class inspired by the books. “I found out about the books because people kept coming into the store and asking about specific products—floggers, restraints, paddles,” said Claire Cavanah, Babeland’s co-founder.

The series, which is light on plot, centers on the lives of Christian Grey, a young businessman, and Anastasia Steele, an innocent college student, as they enter a dominant-submissive relationship. (The conflict comes when “Ana must somehow learn to share Christian’s opulent lifestyle without sacrificing her own identity.”) Cavanah says that she’s seen a twenty-per-cent increase in sales of B.D.S.M. gear since the books’ début. The only analogous moment she can recall during her twenty years at Babeland was when the characters on “Sex and the City” discussed a rabbit vibrator: “There was a run on the store!”
