The Alien Series Empty The Alien Series

Post  PrincessCleo Tue Mar 20, 2012 11:12 am

Well, I guess we need to start a new thread over here for it--the SF 3.0 thread was about the Quadrilogy, but with Prometheus I just don't even want to count anymore. Speaking of which, they have put out a metric crap-ton(ne?) of videos and trailers for it. POR EJEMPLO:

Guy Pearce gives a TED talk
A new android goes on the market
Finally a full trailer holy crap
Even more stuff in a completely different UK trailer
The very first trailer
WALL-ETHEUS

Looks awesome and scary. The first time I saw Aliens I had the worst pain in my stomach. Aliens is not a film you want to watch with a stomach ache, lol.

I want to see if I can get my dad into the theater without him finding out this is an Alien movie. He's fairly internet savvy but he doesn't go to any major movie sites. I think I can manage it.

I'm really excited about Prometheus after seeing the latest trailer. It looks so awesome and creepy!

I love the first two movies and how differently entertaining they are. The third and fourth, not so much. The first is a little slow for the first hour, but once it gets going it grabs ahold of you and keeps you on the edge of your seat. The second is wall-to-wall action, and Hicks is SO cool.

I've never seen any of the movies (I know! I just never got around to it), but the Prometheus trailer looks so good (as in scary as shit), that I bought the first two on dvd. Will watch them as soon as it's a safe amount of time from when I just had dinner.

The first few minutes of Alien 3 that revealed the fates of the characters who made it through Aliens killed a lot of my enjoyment of it right off the bat.

I'm not going to lie, I have had a kneejerk hatred for David Fincher films ever since (though I did end up liking the Social Network).

I think Alien 3 is interesting, although I'm not sure I exactly LIKE it.

But Prometheus cannot get here fast enough.

Happy birthday, David!

Now I'm starting to wonder if this movie isn't also intended as a pseudo-sequel to A.I. as well.

His crocodile tears are just creepy.

David's going to either kill me in my sleep or just sit there watching me. Either way, I'm disturbed.

I always felt a bit sorry for David Fincher because reading about it at the time, the general consensus was that Alien 3 was micromanaged by Fox executives and I think they cut his budget half way through. I read an interview with him at the time in Empire magazine (because there was no online version back then and Empire was the only way to get any information on this side of the Atlantic, and back then I was revered amongst my friends because I knew so much about behind the scenes of films, whereas now they click a link and they all know and I must work harder for their reverence) and he was asked why the fates of Newt and Hicks were...the way they were, and Fincher replied something along the lines of "Why would you want Newt in that prison with those men?" and I thought, the hell with you, Fincher, Newt would have been fine with Mama Ripley and Papa Hicks to take care of her, you're just a lazy bastard who went for the easy option.

Aliens is one of my favourite films. I've always loved how Ripley was so unapologetically awesome. I love the bit where she asks if there's anything she can do and Sgt Apone replies "I don't know. Is there anything you can do?" So she goes to the forklift thingie and picks up a crate very smoothly and walks over to them saying "Where do you want it?" That scene made me a huge Ripley fangirl because she's had to take this job on earth and here she is practically schooling Apone and Hicks.
I've also always loved the theme of the family that runs through it with Ripley risking everything for her pseudo daughter and Hicks making up the third member of their family. But you're not hammered over the head with it, there's just these little moments. And then there's these fantastic action sequences where everything goes to hell and everyone is running and shooting.

James Cameron may come off as a gigantic jackass at times, but the man knows how to make a film.

I love her so much in that movie, yeah.

"Why would you want Newt in that prison with those men?"
WELL THEN MAYBE YOU DON'T MAKE A MOVIE ABOUT EVERYONE CRASH-LANDING ON A PRISON PLANET WHERE EVERYTHING HAPPY GOES TO DIE BECAUSE NO ONE EVER WANTED THAT ANYWAY. ARRRRRRGH. I love Fincher, but that could have been the best-made, best-funded movie in the world and it still would have pissed me off. And yet, it's totally in keeping with his tendency towards the depressingly grimdark, so... basically, don't ever let David Fincher make movies about anyone you actually care about, is what I'm getting from this.

I still want to see how the Wooden Monastery script would have turned out.

In Fincher's defense, it was his first movie. He had no reputation, no clout, no authority. He didn't write the script - he was a gun for hire coming in to something that was going to be a clusterfuck with or without his involvement and he needed the job to make the move from music videos to features. Any comments like the one above may sound insensitive, but it's not like he had the authority to make such a sweeping change in the script (that would have involved trying to woo back not just Sigourney Weaver but also Michael Biehn and either recasting or further rejiggering the story to handle the aging of Carrie Henn, which if the studio was interested in doing that would have already been in motion before he was hired).

What the hell is with Guy Pearce's trajectory? He was an indie darling and doing films with Christopher Nolan before he was CHRISTOHER NOLAN, but then something happened and by the end of the decade he was playing "that jerk" in an Adam Sandler movie, so I kind of figured he was basically consigned to the kind of stuff Bradley Cooper was good for now. But now he's like, headlining real movies again, including that space prison thing that came out. I don't think it was a huge hit, but it was still a role that sounded like it was supposed to be iconic. And he's doing this, and while it's kind of an indignity that you don't get to be the "handsome one" in a movie with Michael Fassbender, it's one of the most ninety-degree comebacks I've seen in a while.

Woah. Who's this Skyblade guy?

Yeah, I also think he's had some weird, inverted parabola career. And I kinda want to see Lockout. I'm thinking his role in Prometheus isn't going to be all that big, though.

Guy Pearce will always be Mike from Neighbours to me. Ah, 80's memories.
He seems to have been working steadily enough the past few years. I didn't see Mildred Pearce, but he was very good in The King's Speech.

I'm not as excited about the new Alien film as I am about some others coming out this summer, but I like Ridley Scott's work (yes, even Robin Hood) so I'm definitely going to see it.

Good to see you finally escaped from that white slavery ring Skyblade.

I swear I thought it was GP staring Burn Notice. I'm expecting him to ask "Can you dig it?" at the end of that speach on the viral.

So I saw Prometheus this afternoon. I shall hold off before doing a proper review, but for now I shall say it's like Giger meets Erich von Daniken and therefore totally awesome. Sure, it has its flaws, but overall, as I said, awesome.

How terrifying is it?

I want to see it, but suspect I will have my hands over my eyes like the whole time and I just started dating this guy and don't want him to think I'm that much of a wussy (but I am).

Good to hear! I've been avoiding even the TV ads lately because marketers have become so annoying with revealing too much.

There's one particular scene (you'll know it when you get to it...) that I could hardly bear to watch, but that aside, not that terrifying.

I'm still trying to decide how I felt about the film - some of the plot strands made no real sense to me, but visually it was stunning.
