Movies I Have Fallen Asleep To

Post  themis on Mon Jul 23, 2012 1:03 am

I could not make it through Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. I made it past the Tom Hardy segment, because I knew he was in it. My husband tells me this was a very good BBC miniseries or a Masterpiece Theater, remade, and it must have been difficult to condense this down to a theater release. The next day I asked him - was there a reason for the endless staring at paintings or staircase railings? He said that yeah, the imagery does wind up having actual meaning. For those who can stick it out. I had been excited to see it for all of the award season buzz, and for the rest of the cast, too.

I started this topic because I was combing the 'Movies at Home' thread for recommendations, and I realized that a way back, I had defended Sucker Punch's watchability, and here I should probably confess: it put me to sleep, as well. And that is an extremely loud, steampunk, kung-fu-y, naked, rape-y kind of movie. It just really never inspired me to really root for the characters.

What has sacked you out, lately? I don't fall asleep to just anything - it takes apathy or dislike of key characters, generally, for me to pack it in.

The freaking Tree of Life at least two if not three times I fell asleep trying to watch it. So much whispering. So much hooey.

For my wife, the answer to this is "Every movie, all the time." It has nothing to do with quality. She could be loving the movie. But she falls asleep. In the theatre. ALL THE TIME. She has Cinematic Narcolepsy or something.

My dad suffers from frequent Cinematic Narcolepsy, too. My mom usually refuses to take him to the movies at all. "Why are we paying money so you can fall asleep? You can nap for free at home." The only movies he doesn't sleep through are really loud action movies where things go boom and wake him up.

I gave up trying to watch Rollerball (the original; never even tried the remake) after the fourth time I'd fallen asleep 1/2 hour in. Also, I've never seen any of the Star Wars movies, even though I've technically been present for about a dozen of their screenings. They're so fucking boring, I always fall asleep less than an hour in.

Usually I don't like to admit this in public, as I think it means I can legally be stoned to death on the main floor of Comic-Con. But I'm highly medicated tonight and feeling a bit reckless. Maybe I'll touch a spider later.

I've quietly agreed with you on so many matters over the years, Raksha. And now you come and do this to me? I feel so betrayed.

Topic? My parents dragged me to see Kevin Costner's JFK when I was young. I fell asleep during the courtroom scene, woke up to find it still going. But then, I believe that most of the movie was that courtroom scene.

Basic Instinct and The Bodyguard. It took three attempts to see all of the Bodyguard, and I've still never managed to stay awake during Basic Instinct...

The freaking Tree of Life at least two if not three times I fell asleep trying to watch it. So much whispering. So much hooey..

I didn't fall asleep, but I was at someone else's house and had about 50 minutes worth of driving to get back home, so I was like, "ooooookay, I'm gonna go now if we're not shutting this off" and left. (And they did shut it off not too long after I left.)

My dad suffers from frequent Cinematic Narcolepsy, too. My mom usually refuses to take him to the movies at all. "Why are we paying money so you can fall asleep? You can nap for free at home." mine as well. I remember seeing the rerelease of Star Wars in 97 and I turned around (he sat in the last row and I refused to sit that far back) and he was snoring away. Too be fair, it was during the part where the robots are wandering through the desert. Sure, it's only about 10 minutes into the movie but it is kind of a boring part.

I nodded off somewhere around the midpoint of My Fair Lady. I normally love musicals, but I don't understand this one's position as a beloved classic. I was tired anyway, but if it had been an engaging movie I think I could have stayed awake. As it was, I woke up on the couch later with the VHS rewinding (it was a long time ago).

Out of boredom: Superman Returns, Sherlock Holmes, and I kept nodding off in the first hour or so of The Dark Knight Rises this weekend. Superman Returns was the biggest disappointment. All I ask of my popcorn movies is that they keep me entertained, and it bored the hell out of me. Oh, I also always fall asleep trying to watch Reservoir Dogs. Never seen the full movie. I've actually never made it past the first act.

Out of exhaustion: The Devil's Advocate. It was the last night it was playing, I had classes that day from 8:00am - 9:00pm (it was a really poorly thought out term) and we were going to the late show because I begged my friend to go. It was Keanu! So, we went and I fell asleep about ten minutes in. I woke up here and there, but I spent the bulk of the time asleep. And then was all wired once the movie was over.

Alexander, it was opening weekend and somehow I dozed off halfway through the movie. I was probably asleep for only a few minutes before somebody bumped me as they were leaving.

The Matrix: Reloaded or whichever the second one was. To be fair, it was a midnight showing. But sometimes if a movie clicks over to solid action, my circuits overload or something and I get sleepy. This was definitely one of those times.

Also, Casablanca. Twice, I think. (That wasn't in the theater though.)

Heeee. An Unpopular Movie Opinion I Hold is that I have never been able to get excited about Casablanca. Even with Roger Ebert's commentary, which made me a DEVOTEE of the arguably much more boring Citizen Kane. I just...I don't know. It's so slow or something. I don't even know because I can't pay attention to it. It's like my eyes bounce off of it. I will give it another try. Sometime. In the morning after a large cup of tea.

Sorry about the Breaking Bad situation. (To veer off-topic momentarily, I think you may find this to be as accurate as I do [note the tag/caption].)

Yes, this. And also Star Trek, the 2009 one. I mean, it was JJ Abrams, and everyone in it is hot, shouldn't I have been able to stay awake long enough to meet Scotty? Not really. I've tried twice.

Reservoir Dogs too-! To this day people will make a Keyser Soze in-joke and I pretend I'm savvy.

Oh, honey. Keyser Soze is The Usual Suspects.

I fell asleep during Thor, but not because it was boring (although there is sort of a lull in the middle?), but because I was recovering from the stomach flu.

I'm glad Miss Moneypenny sorted that out, because I didn't have the heart to.

And how about this - I've never fallen asleep at the movies. Not at the theater, and not even at home, at least that I can recall. And I saw Elizabethtown, which may be the longest movie ever made. (when we were leaving the theater, one of my friends asked if it was still Tuesday).

I posted it and was terrified I'd remembered it wrong and was being a total asshole. But now Themis knows which is which, at least!

Oh, honey. Keyser Soze is The Usual Suspects.

The Usual Suspects might be my personal "falling asleep in a movie" record-holder. I must have tried to watch that movie five or six times and fell asleep every single time. It inspired some pretty weird dreams too.

I rarely fall asleep in the theater because the seats are too uncomfortable, but home movie watching is like a tranquilizer. I can be fully rested and it can be any time of the day, but sitting down to watch a movie is a guarantee that I will be snoozing within the hour. Wish I could sleep that well at night!

Until I saw the last two in the theatre because I love my husband, I had fallen asleep during every single Harry Potter movie I tried to watch. So, the first five Harry Potter movies - at least twice for the first one. Also, The Two Towers. That shit was beyond boring.

Shakespeare in Love was my "nap movie" in college, but because it was comforting, not boring. I can stay awake when I watch it if it's not naptime.
