Re: Current Reads
On the strength of your review, I will still definitely give it a try. I have stumbled upon so many great books because of fellow snarkers!

Yeah, I'm going to check it out, too. Snarkers are the best for recommending books that are outside of my usual genres (mostly romance, because I am a sap).
I kind of went on a Kindle Freebie reading spree this weekend. Nothing really stood out, though A Grosvenor Square Christmas wasn't bad as light holiday read.

Another rec for Gun Machine. I read it earlier this year and enjoyed the hell out of it. The humour has a great bite to it, and it's a cool premise. I'd love to read more with these characters for sure.
A few choice quotes I liked:
A few choice quotes I liked:
“The elevator doors opened to reveal a very large man brandishing a bloodstained antique phone receiver in a plastic bag and proclaiming, "I found this up him!"
"You know," said Tallow, "I really have no response to that.”
“The ECTs are moving the guns in small batches," Bat said. "We're making them take so many photos that one of them asked if she was being trained to shoot porno.”

Re: Current Reads
So I finished Allegiant, and, well...whatever. It wasn't awful, but it wasn't awesome either. We'll see what the movies deliver.
Now I'm reading the very odd (in a good way) Dying is my Business about a guy who can only remember the past year of his life, and is unable to die or sleep. And in the midst of all this...gargoyles, werewolves, and mages happen. And he might be something else as well. It's confusing but cool so far.

I am firing up the Kindle with Hild by Nicola Griffith. I am only barely interested in Anglo/Celtic historical fiction but from the descriptions, this seems to be an interesting take.

Re: Current Reads
Today I finished The Other Side of Paradise by Staceyann Chin. I've been a fan of Staceyann's poetry since I ran across this performance of hers some months ago and this autobiography of hers just makes me like her even more. This was a hard read, not because of how it is written, but because she had a hard, hard life. The poverty, the abandonment by both her parents, the abuse by the relatives forced to take her in, the constant threat of rape from the cousins she was forced to live with, and eventually having to make her way on her own while still in high school would probably have crushed me. But she not only managed to develop a strong sense of self, but put herself through college and strike out on her own in America. And she's a fantastic poet!

Re: Current Reads
Today I tried to read Fantastic Women: 18 Tales of the Surreal and the Sublime from Tin House edited by Rob Spillman. It's a collection of surrealist short stories. I like the occasional surrealist elements in stories, but for some reason when someone sets out to write an entirely, self consciously surrealist story it just irritates me. It comes across as trying too hard. I quit reading all of these stories (save 2) half way through and when I realized I was already 2/3 of the way through the book and still skipping, I just quit.

Re: Current Reads
I'm reading Women in Love b/c I'm very curious about the erotic storyline. But it's not an easy book to read, on my first attempt last year, I only made it to page 18. I am now on page 90, but it's been 4 days since I last picked it up! I want to read it during my Christmas break.

Re: Current Reads
I'm re-reading Anne of Avonlea for the first time in over a decade. Imagine my surprise when I didn't find Paul Irving half as obnoxious as I remember! I mean, I still like Davy better and I still roll my eyes each time he uses the phrase "little mother," but I don't want to slap the sooper-speshul widdle snowflake this time around. Maybe this means that if/when I get to Rilla of Ingleside I'll enjoy Walter more, too.
What hasn't changed is my book-crush on Gilbert. Sigh.

Re: Current Reads
Anne of Avonlea is cute. Too many ellipsis though. I don't find Walter anywhere near as bad as Paul Irving. Well actually Walter's gary stuness doesn't grate on me at all, his dialogue's way better than Paul's and he's not in "Rilla" as much as Paul is in "Avonlea".

Re: Current Reads
I never disliked Walter as much as Paul Irving either - and I was touched when he died - but he was never a favorite. Of Anne's boys, I always liked Jem better. I guess I didn't have much patience with ethereal, fanciful, sensitive children when they didn't have any feistiness and scrappiness to offset it - like Anne herself did. I was just thinking that if I've softened on Paul, maybe I'll appreciate Walter more.

Oh, Jem is definitely my favorite too. And I liked the little bit of Shirley we got.

Re: Current Reads
I read What Was She Thinking? (Notes On a Scandal) by Zoe Heller this weekend, and I thought it was so-so. It was a well-written story that kept me reading, and I can see it as a movie, but the last third of it just fell flat. I didn't like the fact that it just ends without any details on what happened to Sheba or her family. That sucked.

Re: Current Reads
Finished Dying is My Business, which ended up being meh, went onto Quiet by Susan Cain about Introversion and really, really enjoyed it. I thought I knew a significant amount about it, given that I am totally an introvert, but it still ended up surprising me and opening me up to a lot of different things. Very readable too.
Now I'm on to an old mystery/art thriller called The Flanders Panel by Arturo Perez-Reverte. Lord knows what took me so long because it is so. damn. good. The mystery is there but it also is full of great details about art, literature, chess, etc. The world (1980s Spain) is just so fully realized and the characters so compelling that I dread putting it down. A great read.

I got Connie Willis' Blackout and All Clear for Christmas and I'm about a third of the way through the first book. I hope this picks up soon.
