Just because I want my name on the byline.

My freind who likes Twilight unironically is doing Readers' Theatre for halloween and I was teasing her that I was surprised she didn't insist on doing the works of Stephane Meyer.

Twilight press is starting, and as ever, there's some gems out there.
“There’s definitely a kind of R-rated — or maybe NC-17-rated — version of a few scenes in this movie. Because of the violence and stuff in it, it gave you a lot of freedom in the scene and having every character so desperate, it became something very, very different, especially for Edward, who has always held back and is a pacifist and objective and logical about everything. When you’re playing Edward, who’s stuck between an emaciated dummy’s legs churned through a placenta, getting cream cheese all over your face and strawberry jam, and pulling out a 3-week-old baby afterward, with a wig on, it was like something out of a Bunuel movie.”-Robert Pattinson
DEAD.
“Luckily we had Stephenie on set the entire time, and trust me, I asked her a million times, ‘OK explain to me one more time what imprinting is exactly, and did you ever envision what Jacob looked like? What was he doing when he was imprinting?’ It was very, very confusing. It didn’t help that when we filmed it, they put an X on a wall and said, ‘This is Renesmee. You’re going walk in the room, you’re going to look at the X, and you’re going to imprint.’"-Taylor Lautner

The books and movie series have brought me untold joy. I cannot wait until it comes out and might even go with my co-worker who is under the assumption that I love this series in the same way she does. We've had serious conversations around which "Team" we're both on.

Hee my sentiments exactly, that poor kid. And Rob, dude, strawberry jam/cream cheese together is delicious! Truly Bunuel would love the shit out of Breaking Dawn, as would Dali.

Guys, I'm in a community chorus and all of a sudden after rehearsal next Saturday literally 22 of us ranging in age from 14 to 33 are going to go see this. I don't even. I'll report back.

I'm going to a matinee on Friday with a friend of mine. I don't know what we're thinking, except that clearly we are a bit mad and should not be allowed make decisions. Ever.

I'm still up in the air about if I'll see this one. I think I've gotten to that shameful point where I kind of care about this series beyond the "lulz" and it's made watching such horrible films way less fun. Hee.

New EW spread, and awww...they look nice. It's hard not to mentally compare and contrast to the good old powdered donut days.

I've read a couple of reviews that say that there just isn't enough material for two films and that the film suffers as a result because there is so little action. But I especially like this quote from Empire:

The acting’s better than it’s ever been, but with the best will in the world, this can’t get past the fact that the story’s demented.

Yes. Yes, it is.

The online version of a local paper had a picture of RPattz and KStew with the caption "The stars of the poopular movie series meet with fans before the London premiere." It's since been corrected and the writer swears it was just a typo, not a commentary.

I always go to these with a friend who genuinely likes the books and doesn't know I think they suck. So afterwards she often complains about how "such-and-such wasn't as good as in the book" and I'm always thinking it was a million times better because it actually held my interest and made me laugh because they went over-the-top, whereas in the books (as much of them as I'm managed to read through skimming) I just alternate with cringing at and being bored by the shitty writing. I can sit through and be amused by the movies, though usually not for the reasons the writer/director was aiming for (I feel like the actors are all in on the joke) but the books aren't even entertaining enough for me to really read.

Manohla Dargis both likes it and snarks on it.

Crucially and as important, Mr. Condon, whose earlier films include “Dreamgirls” and “Gods and Monsters,” can also offer up, and without a suggestion of filmmaker embarrassment, the sight of Mr. Lautner ripping off his shirt. As Jacob, Edward’s long-suffering, oft-rejected rival for Bella’s affection, Mr. Lautner has plenty of reasons to strip angry: he can turn into a wolf, for starters, and Jacob’s musculature has long been one of the most special of the movies’ effects. That’s reason enough for Mr. Condon to get the character’s shirt off, as is the unavoidable truth that Mr. Lautner, whose pumped physique and flat affect bring to mind one of those friendly pizza delivery boys in a pornographic movie, remains a dish best served with as few words and clothes as possible.

NPR weighs in on "cuckoopants" movie

About three-quarters of the review is "oh my God, this is so ridiculous it's awesome." And then a sense of social responsibility kicks in. I do not disagree with a word of it.

I thought I was going to HAVE to see this lunacy for myself, but I think it's much funnier in theory than I would find it in reality.

I'm just kind of over the "think about the children!" lecturing at this point. It's PG-13, it's a hell of a lot less messed up than the stuff I was reading/watching when I was an adolescent. It'll all be okay if a ton of girls/women go see a silly vampire movie once a year.

Well, I went to see it with a friend of mine this afternoon. It's her birthday and she picked it, but we really did go for the lulz and seeing as how we saw the other films and giggled and groaned over them, we have to see this too. What can I say, we're completionists. We see things through to the bitter end. Also, we saw Species and The Thirteenth Warrior and John Carpenter's Vampires in the cinema. We're in no position to judge anyone on what they watch or read.

Anyway, it's one thing to read this stuff in a book, it's quite another to see it happening on the big screen in front of you. There is a lot of talking and they manage to shoehorn in the werewolf pack/Cullens + Jacob fight before the end. Actually, I began to think that they'd cut that out, it was so long in coming. The birth scene is quite effectively cut so it's suggestively gruesome without actually being IN YOUR FACE so they get to have their 12A (under 12's accompanied) rating here and get more bums on seats. They do well with the special effects with the emaciated Bella too.

The wedding is at the start, naturally enough, and there is a lot of focus on it. I can't say I was too enamoured with the wedding dress and Kristen Stewart looks seriously skinny in this film, especially in the wedding dress which is very clingy, and she was never that big to begin with. Billy Burke and Anna Kendrick do get the best lines and for all the talk about the guests at the wedding, you see very little of them. I don't know what it is about Maggie Grace's contacts in this but they make her look like she's permanently STARING at you.
There are a lot of shots of Bella and Edward staring at one another and that's fine if you buy into their Epic Love. Otherwise it's just two loo-lahs give each other the googly eyes until you want to turn a hose on them to make them go away.
The sex scene is all fun and games until someone breaks a head board.

But unless you're one of the three leads, you don't get much screen time and I don't know who Nikki Reed pissed off but at one point, I thought she looked a bit like a drag queen. I'm sorry but that's what popped into my head the way that wig was sitting on her. Actually, no, that's an insult to drag queens who take a lot more care with their hair and make up than anyone did on this film.

We get to see the wolf pack talking to one another while in wolf form but you get to hear their voices over the growly-wowlies, which I thanked God for, because I thought we'd be listening to them going "grr, arrgh, bleargh, woof" with subtitles or something.

When Reneesme was mentioned, the woman in front of us snorted loudly and said "WHAT?!" Clearly she hadn't read the book.

So there you have it. It's not a good film by any means, though R-Pattz and Kristen Stewart do their best. Taylor Lautner looks about as threatening as a...let's just say, Momo was scarier than he was. Emoting fiercely through his clenched jaw, threatening vengeance on Edward and what have you, it's not that effective. And don't get me started on the imprinting. They have a scene where Jacob sits on the beach and bitches about imprinting and how it takes away your choices, while he, Seth, Leah and one of the others look over at where Sam and his girlfriend and another lad who's imprinted and his girl are sitting and being all coupley. Then they show a quick distance shot of the one who imprints on the two year old and he's showing her the water or something and yeah.
Imprinting. On kids. They went there. What an age we live in.
