Tumblr

Post  Poubelle on Mon Jan 21, 2013 12:45 pm

The website for photos, gifs, funny fandom shit, and nonsense like this:
Your life is not an episode of Skins. Things will never look quite as good as they do in a faded, sun-drenched Polaroid; your days are not an editorial from Lula. Your life is not a Sofia Coppola movie, or a Chuck Palahniuk novel, or a Charles Bukowski poem. Grace Coddington isn’t your creative director. Bon Iver and Joy Division don’t play softly in the background at appropriate moments. Your hysterical teenage diary isn’t a work of art. Your room probably isn’t Selby material. Your life isn’t a Tumblr screencap. Every word that comes out of your mouth will not be beautiful and poignant, infinitely quotable. Your pain will not be pretty. Crying till you vomit is always shit. You cannot romanticize hurt. Or sadness. Or loneliness. You will have homework, and hangovers and bad hair days. The train being late won’t lead to any fateful encounters, it will make you late. Sometimes your work will suck. Sometimes you will suck. Far too often, everything will suck - and not in a Wes Anderson kind of way. And there is no divine consolation - only the knowledge that we will hopefully experience the full spectrum - and that sometimes, just sometimes, life will feel like a Coppola film.
I have been LOLing my head off. And feeling way better about the silly, pretentious nonsense I posted as a teenage on Livejournal, because it was never that ridiculous AND I had the sense to friendslock it.

Also, has this person actually seen any of the senior Coppola's films? Some truly great stuff, but you wouldn't want to live there. Actually, considering how the characters tend to feel in Sofia Coppola's movies, I don't want their lives either, affluent and super-duper affluent as they may be.

On a more serious note: has missing e been working really inconsistently for anyone else?

I've got a tumblr, and I've got to say I love it. I don't really post anything, but I get a lot of fun out of the people I follow and the stuff they post. Mostly motor racing related, but also some humour and TV and movie stuff. There sure is a lot of teenage angst in general though. I'm glad I didn't have one when I was a teenager because I would have posted a lot of emo crap.

I asked about this in another thread but no one responded. I joined Tumblr recently and while I don't post anything, I'd love to follow other people. Are there any recommendations for pages I should be following?

I've long wondered how fandom blogs on Tumblr look to the "hipster bloggers"--the ones who are more prone to reblogging pictures of girls in sundresses standing in fields, quotes written on paint samples in Sharpie, and Lana Del Ray songs. I started using Tumblr in late 2008, and it was kind of a port of call for the artsy, hipper people to blog, even though there were some funny pop culture things that had sprung from it. (I actually created a blog there because of All The Young Gossip Girls, which was kind of Gossip Girl fan fic told through notes, letters, and announcements and such)

So does the new update suck balls, or does it suck donkey balls?

I do think it's interesting that tumblr is a weird blend of arty hipsters, fandom, and social justice warriors. Livejournal really only ever had the latter two. (And a lot of teens. Tumblr seems older in that there's more college kids than high school ones.) I would love to know what demographics they officially claim to have for advertisers/investors.

It sucks great big, greezy elephant balls. It doesn't work on my HP tablet, which runs WebOS, so I can't post or reblog stuff and I do the majority of my tumblr stuff there. It's slow on my computer (like super duper slow) and it's ridiculous.

So yeah, I'm not a fan. I'd move, but I have no idea where to.

I'm tempted to go back to LJ, but only if I can convince my friendslist to go back, too. I think there's only person I really care about who updates with any regularity there anymore.

I think I'm stuck til there's a big enough exodus someplace else.

I did notice that the mobile site still has the old reblog page, so that was nice.

I haven't gotten any update yet. The site still looks the same.

Cutebutpsycho, that's a major pain about it not working on your tablet. Maybe they'll fix it as soon as the update is all rolled out.

I haven't had any major problems with the update but I haven't liked any of the changes. You no longer can tell which of your tracked tags have updates, and you can't change the tags for reblogs and I hate the cutesy buttons that I can never remember what they stand for.

Weirdly enough, when I checked my tablet today, it worked fine. But it's still that update with all the wonky stuff and I dunno. I just wish that they'd incorporate the missing E stuff and Tumblr Savior and we could call it a day. The shiny bits aren't worth it at all.

New to tumblr, and not sure about something.

Someone used my "ask me anything" thingy, and sent me a message. I composed a reply, and then it asked if I wanted to "publish answer" or "answer privately". I clicked "answer privately", and then everything disappeared, including her original message to me. There's nothing in my inbox now. Did my reply go through? Is there a way to be able to see her note to me again?

No, that's how the messaging system works. The message is gone, your reply was sent.

I wish there was a way to hide or mute people on Tumblr just for a little while. I started following someone who reblogs just about everything for like hours at an end. I don't want to completely unfollow them but I might have to.

Install Tumblr Savior and savior their username. That way all their posts will be hidden and if you decide you want to look at one, you can.

Looks like Yahoo's going to buy Tumblr for $1.1 billion.

Here's an odd question: I have a tumblr I'm trying to cultivate as a news aggregator on a topic, and in order to cover the loss of Google Reader, I set up a second blog on the account and several IFTTT recipes to get my favorite feeds posted to that blog automatically.

Is there any way to follow your second blog on the first one? Ideally, I would see all the aggregated links on my normal account as though I was following a random blog, then I would be able to reblog the ones I want to on my main account.

ETA: Nevermind! When I hit reblog, I can select my other blog in the dropdown and post to there instead.

Tumblr is driving me nuts since yesterday. My dashboard has suddenly become clogged with "suggestions" of who to follow. Every third post is a suggestion! And it's not a case of these being reblogs of people I follow. If I click the X to make it disappear, it does, but if I leave and return, it's right back again. Bah.

Welcome to the new Tumblr. That's a feature now. Instead of being able to track tags and see all of the new content in those tags, Tumblr is now allowing you to "follow" a tag, which means they decide what you should see from the tag and put it directly into your feed! It's absolutely terrible.

I HATE IT. I hate everything about the new Tumblr. Also, is it just me, or if you go to your tracked tags, does it just show you the search rather than the tagged link? Because I find that so annoying.

I want my replies back! I don't want to reblog every time I want to say something about someone else's post. Especially if it's, like, a really personal post and all I want to do is offer some encouragement or help or something. (Liking sort of works for encouragement, but "hey I *like* your really awful medical issue/that scary thing happening in your family" seems wrong.)

Maybe it's my fat thumbs, but I keep accidentally following blogs in mobile. Or everyone I follow keeps changing their username and icon with no announcement.

Tracked tags basically don't exist anymore. Not without the New XKit extension for Firefox or Chrome.

Staff said that they are replacing replies with...something. Because only a few thousand blogs ever used replies! And why not have the replacement ready before you remove them? It is a Tumblr mystery.
