I just find the "mad genius serial killer I'm supposed to find fascinating" trope offensive and boring, even aside from torture porn and violence against women. Add in those two factors (which are almost always present) and I am so out of there. And since Lecter is on my radar as the poster child for the crime fiction subgenre I hate the most (and I love me some crime fiction) I just avoid everything to do with the character. Red Dragon was good because of Francis Dolarhyde, and Silence of the Lambs was interesting once. This is definitely not a show I'll be watching.

I stopped watching Criminal Minds a while back because the show was just disturbing me on a grand level for some of the reasons that others have said upthread. What draws me to this show is the character of Will Graham. It interested me psychologically when I found out what Manhunter was about because when you've gone ten rounds with Hannibal Lecter, how do you come back from that? How do you cope when circumstances bring you back to that again?

So that's a lot of what draws me to this show. Knowing what is happening to Will Graham now and will happen to him later is what intrigues me. Quite possibly it wouldn't have if Hugh Dancy wasn't giving such a good performance as Will.

The emphasis on Will's empath trait seems kind of bizarre, though. Isn't sociopathy by definition, the total lack of normal feeling and empathy? What is there, emotionally for an empath to track, besides white noise? (the real-life agent tracks behavioral cues as motives, as opposed to feelings.) Maybe I'm thinking comic-book empath, instead of profiler, IDK.

I just kind of throw up my hands as to the real-world psychological verisimilitude of any of this. I mean, the guy they were after was doing [whatever horrible things] because he just loved someone ~too much.~ They were all like "He loves and respects women!" and I was like SERIAL KILLERS HAVE NEVER WORKED THAT WAY, EVER. The reason I'm willing to go with it is because at least having your hero get upset and see violence as an emotionally traumatizing thing is better than the show being totally jaded about it.

It's sad that that we know WAY too much about serial killers in real life. One minute you're in Victorian England with Jack, and they next thing you know you're hip deep in Ed Kemper and The Vampire of Dusseldorf. OH and and I was googlen' My Friend Dahmer and sombody (who needs a serious mental evaluation)-had put up the ACTUAL crime scene photos. Cannibals are not dainty eaters, I'll tell you that. #NOT SAFE FOR ETERNITY, #WHY?

having your hero get upset and see violence as an emotionally traumatizing thing is better than the show being totally jaded about it..
You probably know this, but the IRL profiler sent audio tapes of rape victims to the set, which is why the first actor that played the role refused to reprise it. It's not a fun life, no.

I thought the "he loves them too much" thing may have also been a tip of the hat to Clarice and Lector. "He won't come after me. He would consider that rude."

Wait, what? I hadn't heard about this, or that someone else was cast originally. I'm guessing the profiler was John Douglas? I've read a couple of his books and... no, it does not sound fun.

By the way, Bryan Fuller tweeted last night that the Marlowe murders in the opening scene were actually
Spoiler:
Francis Dolarhyde's first murders.
That... doesn't actually reduce the number of questions I have about that whole thing.

Hugh Dancy was the only one cast for this, but William Peterson who originally played the role in Manhunter had an extremely difficult time with it because of that.

I think the empathy thing is more he is able to put himself in other peoples thought processes. Which is iffy, but is interesting from a viewing standpoint, so I'll take it.

I kind of want Larry to ask Will in an episode, if he wished he'd taken the Blue Pill.

Via Tv Tropes:"John Douglas, who Jack Crawford's based on[]gave audio tapes of women being tortured and raped to Scott Glenn as research for the role of Crawford. The tapes disturbed Glenn so much he never reprised the role, which forced the producers to move Crawford's death [] and recasting the role with Harvey Keitel in Red Dragon." see: SoTL> Literature, Jerkass.

John Douglas is kind of a professional asshole, so I totally believe that story. Good at what he did, but up his own ass and seemed to enjoy shocking people.

I had to get up in the middle of last night's ep and take a phone call so I missed a big middle chunk of the show. But from what I saw, Will is more Sad Puppy than ever, and I think Hannibal either wants to pet him or eat him. Not sure which. Also, Brian Fuller said that Lecter eats/serves people in like 10 out of 13 episodes, so I'm pretty sure Crawford was not enjoying pork, there.

Yeah, Bryan Fuller was all up in the Twitters again confirming that. I'm just basically going to assume that everything is people. Shit, I was more surprised that nobody ate the mushrooms.

"Anyone see a shittake?"

Yeah, the "...pork" line got one of the biggest laughs from me.

For me, the best line was Crawford's deadpan "Welcome back" right after the shiitake line.

I laughed my ass off when Crawford very cheerfully suggested that Lecter would be the best therapist choice, but then, that may be more of a situational humor thing.

'Hannibal' Matches NBC's Best 18-49 Slot Rating With Entertainment Programming in More than a Year! Hell yes! It was generally expected to lose viewers, and it did not! I am excite!

Well, hopefully with those numbers it's a case of, "We don't have anything better right now and it's not a mega-expensive show to produce AND it's critically well received.... so we'll keep it out of a sense of inertia." Because honestly, even though it increased in viewers week to week, it only beat reruns on the other 2 networks with national programming at that time and it's not exactly hitting huge total numbers.

But it's NBC. So who knows what the fuck they're thinking.

Oh, the ratings are terrible. But they are NBC terrible, which is a whole other class of terrible. And it's getting a lot of buzz, which is helpful. I think they've already filmed all or most of all of the rest of this season, so at least we'll probably get to see one whole season.

Yeah, I think they've got everything done but editing on the finale. They're kind of in a position where it's like, it might not get great ratings, but--it's not like they've got anything else, you know? I'm more concerned that they won't sign off on a second season.

I'm hoping people will give the show a chance after they start hearing that it was not, in fact, the terrible idea it sounded like.

Last night, before everything terrible started happening in Boston, this show was fantastic. However, they are pulling episode 4 and not airing it in the US at all because it deals with children killing children and Fuller felt that it was just not the appropriate time.
Fans of “Hannibal” will still be able to see clips from episode four, however. NBC is making a package of clips from the yanked episode available on NBC.com next week. It focuses on character development and not the procedural element featured in episode four of “Hannibal.” Package will feature Fuller offering voice over and discussing the series.

I understand where they're coming from, but it's annoying to me that they're not making it available *at all*. They should just do the whole episode online.

Yes, I agree. It's supposed to air in other countries, so there will be ways to see it, but I think people should have the chance to make the choice to legally see it or not if they choose.
