Here's a first look at the dress on the cover of People.

It's very pretty. But I don't love it.

I can't believe this weddingpalooza has produced 5 Amal wedding-related outfits. But of course I want to talk about them. I looooove the cream pantsuit with hat. Love it. (But I wish the pants were hemmed shorter.) I love the black and white striped dress. I really like the red McQueen dress and the flowered dress with the bell shaped skirt, even though I don't like mullet skirts and the bell shaped skirt is kind of too little girlish for her. The wedding dress is my least favorite, but still has beautiful lace. In terms of fashion porn, this wedding was pretty good.

I also liked a lot of the outfits of the guests, especially Emily Blunt's Pucci, and Anna Wintour looked fab (though am so tired of her hair, I know it's her signature, but still).

I think they also knew the press were going to be in there and decided to have fun with. They are both in high profile careers and probably do welcome the boost it'll bring but tbh doing things for pr doesn't mean your solely a pr couple if that makes sense. I can fully believe they are super happy and in love and also enjoying the buzz.

I think they look like each other. Which makes me think they might be real, as well as tactically advantageous for them both.

Celebrity Bookends? Yeah, that happens a lot. And if they make the cover of Vogue, at least that's an upgrade from Kimye.

I am so on board with this theory.

Me too. And also I want to know who will play George Clooney in the movie!

Also, I adore lace dresses and like any kind of sleeve/strap/off-the-shoulder business, just as a difference from strapless. So I'm thinking I like that dress a lot.

The banns have been posted for Benedict Cumberbatch's upcoming wedding to Sophie Hunter. I didn't even know he was engaged. When the banns are posted, how long before they must marry? Is it three weeks?

I know that for the Catholic Church (or my parish at least) the banns run for three weeks before the wedding. So the wedding is usually the fourth week following the bans.

They announced their engagement in the Times just a day or so ago.

WHAT?? The banns have to be posted in the Catholic Church? I never knew that, hand on my heart. I always thought it was a Protestant thing because of that Catherine Cookson book I read as a teen that had the heroine marrying the local lout and she was so not into it that she didn't go to the local village church and it was remarked upon that she was not there to hear her own banns being read out. I know they were Protestant because they had a Vicar and a vestry in that church. In retrospect, while the book was quite good (the heroine gets to leave the village with the local lad who has always loved her in the end after her nasty husband eventually dies), it probably should not be my only source of reference on these matters.

Given how much of the Anglican Church is Catholic-Lite, it's probably used in both.

As a lifelong Protestant of the American Evangelical stripe (except politically), I've never heard of this tradition at all.

My Catholic parish has the banns announced 3 weeks in advance. And our church has a vestry (with a convenient exit door, if you are sitting up front and want a quick escape without fighting the crowds...)

I was raised pretty high church Episcopalian (which is about as close as you can get to C of E on this side of the pond) and we don't post banns. You can, but it's optional. I've never seen it. I mean, in the days of Google and actually moving 15 miles beyond where you were born, you're not likely to end up with your cousin or a bigamist, which takes all the sport out of it, REALLY. It sounds like fun, though. Like you could post them, but then say "fuck it" and go to Gretna Green or get married by special licence because you accidentally got caught in a snowstorm and had to spend the weekend in Lord Sexybreeches' hunting lodge and even though all you did was bitch at each other and sublimate by playing chess, now you're compromised and must marry him and his vast fortune and estates and slightly tragic but not too scarring past, woe.

^^I've definitely read that book. I've only read about banns being read in Regency romance novels. I didn't know it was an actual thing that still occurs.

Apparently the Swedish royals still do it. It was done for Victoria and Madeleine's weddings and I assume it will also be done for Carl Phillip. Aren't the Swedes Lutheran? Or is it another Protestant denomination?

The parish I attended growing up printed the banns in the back pages of the weekly bulletin, amongst the ads for local businesses, so I don't think anyone was too worried about any real problems coming up. (It was also usually a shock to recognize any names---the church was fairly old and very beautiful and fairly popular for weddings.) I had no idea any Protestants did banns until this thread.

Anyway, congrats to Cumberbatch and Hunter, who should definitely get zero grief if she wants to keep her last name.

You're right, the Swedes are Lutheran. I grew up Lutheran, and we didn't post banns, but our branch of Lutheranism was of the German variety.

I grew up super Catholic and had no idea that banns were a thing. I didn't get married in a church, but all my cousins did and I've never heard of it. Weird!

I'm happy for Benedict and Sophie. I had no idea he was 38, I always thought he was much younger!

The funniest thing to come out of this, for me at least, was Game of Thrones' 18-year-old Sophie Turner denying on Twitter that she was marrying Cumberbatch. People were apparently freaking out about it congratulating her.

I had no idea about any of that. For I am not white. My people legit go door to door handing out wedding invites though to shame people into coming.

Congrats to them! Hopefully this means I will have less dreams about him being way too invested in the fetus I'm carrying.

Lord Sexybreeches sounds like an ideal role for Benedict Cumberbatch, yes?
