Re: Death Pool
Oh, man, this is awful. Not unexpected, what with the COPD and all, but awful all the same. He really was a great man and he will be sorely missed. I should go see if my mom's okay. She's been a Trekkie since TOS first aired and Nimoy and Spock have always meant a lot to her.

Re: Death Pool
Thanks for that! I haven't heard the Ballad of Bilbo Baggins in years. :)
I am grateful I got to watch him present his life/career/hobbies/interests/"retirement" retrospective at a Las Vegas Star Trek a few years ago. It was funny and touching and there wasn't a dry eye in the house. He seemed content, happy, and grateful. He seems to have lived his life well.
I saw a tweet from Mia Farrow regarding his passing. She mentioned how rare it was to never hear bad things about people in this industry, but Leonard Nimoy only ever received the "lovliest love" when people spoke of him.
I think that speaks volumes about the man.

The Loch Ness Monster must be breathing a sigh of relief having evaded Nimoy for good.

Terry Pratchett. He is my favorite author. So sad.

I'm so sad about Terry Pratchett. I kinda want to just read Reaper Man and cry.

Re: Death Pool
I just had to get off Tumblr-- there are so many pictures and quotes I want to look at, but I can't be having with bawling at my desk when I have reference appointments this afternoon.
I foresee an epic re-read in my immediate future. And I need to dig out those animated versions of some of his stories.

I'm sitting here at work trying not to get weepy at my computer. Goddamnit. So many utterly useless, talentless 'celebrities' in the world, and we lose someone like Terry at the ridiculous age of 66. He wasn't nearly finished with all the ideas he had in his head.

Between this and Tony Fenton (a radio DJ who is associated with the parts of my life when I'd be studying in the evening for school and college and when he was doing an afternoon show that we'd listen to at work) dying at the age of 53 from cancer, I am this close to having the tears in my eyes be a full on bawling session.

I'm just gonna have a sniffle for a bit. I knew he wasn't well for awhile, but man, it still hurts.

My mother was saying to me the other day that there are always a lot of deaths in March for some reason. It's sadly true.

This year just keeps getting worse.
We knew this was coming, but still. His books have given me such joy over the years, and he was way, way too young.

Not exactly a shock, but still a gut punch. I like to think that he was greeted by Discworld Death.

Re: Death Pool
From The Guardian obit: "Now Death has gained a most illustrious client, for Pratchett himself has died, aged 66, after suffering from early-onset Alzheimer’s disease. The exchange is no doubt unamused but courteous on one side, amusing but rueful on the other, but of fervent interest to both parties. It’s a conversation that millions of Pratchett fans would ache to overhear. Would Death dare to speak in capitals to Sir Terry Pratchett?"
I think that if there was anyone for whom Death would speak in capitals, it would be Terry.
Good articles, both.

Re: Death Pool
My brother in law worked on some Discworld reissues. His comment: "He always got his work in on time. This is the greatest compliment a production editor can give a writer." I thought that was kind of sweet to learn that, besides being generally awesome, he was also a great dude to work with.

Alberta Watson, probably best known as Madeline in La Femme Nikita. She was also in the reboot, but as I didn't watch, I'm not sure if she was playing the same character or not. She was also the mother in the ultimate Oedipal movie, Spank the Monkey.
She was beautiful and talented. And 60 is much too young.

Oh Z'no! His catcher's mitt-like face brought me a lot of joy. I'll watch Soup Catcher Soultaker in his memory.

I got a lot of mileage out of his United States of America in middle school.
Met him at Comic-Con in 2009. Here he is with the jacket he wore on Volume 2. The next couple of years we kept running into him and his wife at breakfast at the Hilton.

Re: Death Pool
I am crying actual tears about this, which I realize is probably ridiculous, but I have no control over my inner child when something like this happens. I watched Anne CONSTANTLY when I was little, sometimes at home, but mostly at our cabin in Wisconsin with my sister and my grandma. My sister is the one that told me, thank God, but I'm not really in the mood to call my 91-year-old grandmother and tell her this.
