I've posted this on FB, but just in case...
Local Minneapolis NPR music station, The Current, is spending the next 22.5 hours going through the catalog alphabetically. They're currently on Chocolate Box, and you can listen here.

Celebrity adjacent: Patton Oswalt's wife dies suddenly. That's really sad; they have a small child.

::waves::naughty zoot wrote:This was just so unexpected. My husband, who is the biggest Prince fan i know aside from jstilwe, literally staggered a step backwards when I told him yesterday. And the drug stories I'm hearing seem incredibly out of character.
Yeah, so I was in actual denial for a good hour after a friend told me it was on TMZ. "Nah, they're just confused, he's been sick, but he just had a party at his house, just saw him on Twitter; he's fine." Once his publicist confirmed, just total shock. I skipped tears (at least until I saw the Corvette tribute ), and was numb at my desk for the rest of the workday, then went home and watched coverage until 2am. Forgot to eat dinner. Feels a little strange to feel so much loss because of a celebrity death, but here it is.
Like the rest of you, I'm loving the outpouring of respect and admiration and funny stories. I haven't turned off the TV except to sleep, and it's great to see everyone coming together to show the Prince love.
That said, those rumor-mongering fucks at TMZ need to go purify themselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka. I don't know how he died, don't care, and seriously hate the clickbaity drug overdose headlines. I don't know if he got too into the Percocet because of his hip pain, or if he's dealing with some other kind of illness, or if the flu got him (it killed my dad in a matter of days last year, as some of you know, and I have had to restrain myself from going keyboard crazy on folks who were saying nobody dies from flu anymore) -- but shit, enough with the salacious speculation.
I was lucky enough to catch one of his final two shows in Atlanta last week, and it just seems right to me. Around the World in a Day was the first record I ever bought, and his music has been a major part of my life since I knew what music was. Glad I was able to hang with him until the very end.

How horrible. It's been such a series of bleak events lately, I feel the need to reach out to people in some way. If anyone needs a virtual hug or a chat on Facebook, let me know.

American Idol Season 2 contestant Rickey Smith
Very sad, he seemed like such a sweet guy on the show.

Fucking drunk drivers.
I had forgotten his "hercules, hercules" thing he did until I read it in the article, and then I was immediately able to place him. (Season 2 was a long time ago!)

Re: Death Pool
xyzzy, that one makes me sad too. I watch Forensic Files on HLN almost every night (or, rather, fall asleep to it). I've watched it a lot over the years and have some episodes memorized at this point. He had a great voice.

Morley Safer, four days after retiring. Forty-six years on 60 Minutes is a pretty impressive legacy.

He would have retired sooner if he hadn't loved what he did and thought he was making a difference. Glad he got to do it as long as he did.

Theresa Saldana, from Raging Bull, The Commish, and my favorite, the obscure Keanu Reeves film The Night Before. She was a tough lady who survived a horrifying knife attack by a stalker in the 80s and went on to found Victims for Victims.
