Netflix Empty Netflix

Post  katesti Sun Nov 27, 2011 11:36 pm

I just ranted about this in another thread, but thought I'd put it here, in case anyone has any suggestions.

I really really wanted to watch Morning Glory today - I Redboxed it when I was on maternity leave and remember liking it, but that's about it. I tried adding it to my Instant queue and it's there when I look at the queue online, but isn't showing up on the queue through my Tivo. Everything else on the queue is, including other stuff I added today. I tried moving it to #1, deleting and re-adding, even restarting the Tivo, and nothing. It is PISSING ME OFF.

However - I just noticed that one of the other movies I added today is only showing that it's two minutes long. WTF Netflix.

Our queue is screwing up too, katesti. We watch it through a Wii, and yesterday it was showing that we had NO Instant Queue on either the wii or Mr. Grayeagle's iPhone, but if we found one of our queued movies, the "Add to Queue" button said "Remove from instant queue." They must be f*cking with the programming.

ETA: haha, I meant Mr. Sixchooks.

Which TiVo model is it? If it's the Premiere, it sometimes help to change the menus to Standard Dec instead of HD. Don't know why, but that sometimes works for resetting the Netflix app. Also, there's some luck with searching for the movie in TiVo Search, and choosing Netflix as your viewing option.

Ugh, good, I hope they finally have to do closed captioning.

I'm not sure that's really Netflix's responsibility. I would think captions - being copyrighted material - would be the responsibility of the publishers and distributors of the content who provide it to Netflix. You wouldn't hold Blockbuster accountable if Fox decided to leave captions off a DVD they put out. Holding them responsible for physical access to a physical facility is one thing - holding them responsible for content is something else.

They're restricting access by not making closed captions available (and I've noticed the captions unavailable on Netflix when they are included on the DVD) and now that Netflix has a near-monopoly on the former rental market, it's a real restriction. It is their responsibility. Besides, Netflix makes deals with the publishers and the distributors of the content. It's not like it's just shipped to them in boxes already made.

Netflix does make closed captioning available, though. The fact that it's available on some programs and not others sounds like the problem isn't on Netflix's end.

I agree, captioning should be available for everything. But I think suing Netflix is the wrong way to go about it.

From the article you linked:
Back in June, Netflix was sued by the National Association of the Deaf for not providing captions for most of its streaming content. If you’ll notice, that’s around the same time that Netflix picked up the pace to now double the number of hours streamed with captions.
The lawsuit may not be able to take care of the remaining titles but it's certainly accomplished something in the past year, even if indirectly. Netflix may say they have closed captioning "available," but before last June it was not on most of the programs my parents tried to watch, and they weren't niche titles either.

If it's available at all when you're streaming through TiVo (afaik it isn't), it is so impossible to find that it's worthless. I hope that changes, so I can stop choosing between missing chunks of dialog or hoping my neighbors aren't home/don't mind.

The only time I haven't had any trouble getting some kind of captioning is English subtitles for foreign films (via my laptop or TiVo).

Netflix has some Korean dramas. I've started Secret Garden and I've only seen the first episode. I also have Boys Over Flowers in my queue. Any other recommendations for K-dramas?

Also, I started watching Hemlock Grove and I think I'm on episode four or five. Do I continue? I gather from reading the first page of the Hemlock Grove thread that it's a terrible series but is it at least entertaining? I'm not a fan of being grossed out and so far I've been able to handle it but does it get super disgusting?

My Girlfriend is a Gumiho is ridiculously silly but also freaking adorable. I thought I had seen Coffee Prince available but it might not have been on Netflix, now that I think about it.

Secret Garden is really cute, though I can admit to fast-forwarding through a few of those long scenes focusing on Ha Ji-Won weeping towards the latter middle. Hyun Bin's sparkly track suits haunt my dreams.

So I was very sad to see this list of US Netflix shows that were scheduled to expire on February 1 (basically, BBC shows and My Little Pony). But I have heard that you can request that certain shows be retained by telling Netflix's customer service (use the Live Chat on Netflix's help page here). I just did, and though I have my doubts that it will do anything, but the rep seemed pretty optimistic, and was happy to take down the list of shows that I wanted them to keep. (And I also mentioned that some shows I didn't tell the rep about was because they were available on Amazon Prime. Also said that I only go to Amazon Prime when a show isn't available on Netflix, because the user interface etc. were so much better on Netflix. This is true for everyone, right?) So all of you who want Netflix to keep certain shows go out and do the same!

I have noticed that certain things like that disappear for a month or two and then come back, presumably when Netflix negotiates with the distributors again. I've seen some of those shows fall off and come back a few times, so I wouldn't worry too much about it. That list in particular made me laugh because over the last few years, I've made my way through just about everything on it that I'm interested in. And yes, I agree that the Netflix interface is better than Amazon's, so I prefer to use Netflix when a show is available on both.

I watched my first Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes episode on Netflix two years ago, then when I went to watch another one a couple of weeks later they were gone! I didn't even know Netflix dropped shows--I thought it just kept growing its library. They still haven't added it back.

(Dropping Blackadder? Unacceptable!)

I hope you are right, but I have also seen many shows disappear and not come back, like all of the Nick Jr shows that left after the Viacom contract expired. Since all of these BBC shows appear to be part of one contract, I hope it's not the same situation.

Netflix is making a Wet Hot American Summer series and the original cast is returning! This is either going to be awesome or awful. I'll be watching either way.

Good news: I just saw this article about those BBC shows that were set to drop off of Netflix, and it sounds like they're staying!

This is weird, I've been catching episode of The Office on Netflix and I'm noticing tons of extended jokes that I never saw before. I've got all of these seasons on DVD so it's not a TV editing/syndication thing, I don't think. It's very weird to watch these episodes that I practically know by heart with all of this additional set-up to the jokes. TBH, in many cases, I find the edited versions a little funnier and that they get to the punchline a little faster. I've noticed this, to a slightly lesser degree, with Friends as well.

I was always under the impression that the DVD versions included the fullest episode cuts so I can't figure out what these extended episodes are.
