Is anyone else watching Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell? I'm really enjoying it. It's been ages since I read the book so I've forgotten a lot, but from what I remember it's keeping close to the book so far. I love the casting, though I always imagined the Man with the Thistle-down Hair to look more like David Bowie - more reedy and playful with a sinister undertone rather than just outright menacing.

Yes, starting June 13 here in the colonies. Hate you.

I thought about doing a re-read, but perhaps it's just as well to let the TV production have it's own breathing room. Lest we end up in a Game of Thrones style hurlyburly.

We signed up to Netflix a few weeks ago and yesterday I used it for the first time, mainlining the first five episodes of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which I love. It's sweet and bright and funny, and Ellie Kemper is just perfect as Kimmy. Her facial expressions are completely hilarious.

I thought I posted it here, so sorry if I'm repeating myself, but season 1 of The Fall. I loved it, but I thought it was a mini-series, so now I'm left hanging (so to speak) until I can get my hands on season 2.

I discovered that the miniseries North & South (Victoria era, Richard Armitage, not Civil War, Patrick Swayze) is on Netflix, and even thought I've watched it before and loved it, it had been years, so I ended up watching it again this weekend. Holy crap. Watching four hours of Richard Armitage giving smoldering looks through industrial Victorian England is like watching porn. Actually scratch that - time required to watch North & South = 4 hours + 7.5 hours to watch the last five minutes at least 90 times. If I may engage in a bit of hyperbole for a moment: I fail to see how any man could be sexier in any role, ever.

Spoiler, just in case:
Spoiler:
One of my favourite parts of the last five minutes is after they've been kissing on the platform (*siiiiggggghhhh*) and then they call that the London train is about to depart, she gets up really suddenly with this like determined look on her face, and his facial expressions is all "oh noes, I've chased her away!" but we realize in like two seconds that she's just all: "BRB - gotta grab my bag so we can go to bed- I mean go home together." And then she DOES go home with him and I'm pretty sure that the publicness of that whole last scene would have probably destroyed both their reputations forever, but there they are on the train with like no shits to give. I love it so much.

Ahhh, North & South one of my favorite ways to spend a Sunday. I only first watched it a couple of years ago (after coming across it on Netflix), but a couple times a year I find myself re-watching it for Richard Armitage. So here's the big questions I have: how did he not become a huge star after that miniseries? Because I don't think I've ever seen anyone smolder that hard, and yes, I'm including Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy behind him. I just find it kind of stunning he didn't get scooped up to become the next hot British actor for women to swoon over.

And I know he's going to be on Hannibal this season, which I am looking forward to, but I have a feeling he's just going to terrify me.

I love North & South, but it took me a while longer to warm up to it than to Pride & Prejudice. The tone is more dour overall, which is not everyone's cup of tea. That being said, it totally floats my boat. Also, the first time I saw it was before Downton Abbey, but now, whenever I watch it, I'm all, "More terrible things happen to Mr. Bates!"

Jumping on the North and South love train. Richard Armitage could smoulder for England.

I watched North and South after becoming smitten with Richard Armitage in MI-5. It was a lovely period drama. I'm probably due for a rewatch!

I know, and after The Hobbit movies, too. He's doing fine, but should be much bigger. Can we attribute it to bad agent/managering? Not that I know anything about that.

I'm too chicken to watch him in Hannibal.

If you want to see more of him on Netflix, watch his guest episodes on the Vicar of Dibley ("The Handsome Stranger" is the first one, and the show is a lot of fun in general), and he plays the bad guy in the cheesy but fun series, Robin Hood.

This weekend I started binge watching Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries, and I heartily recommend it. It's so much fun! Sure there's lots of murder, but the clothes are fabulous, and I want to be Phryne Fisher so much. At least, I want her wardrobe, car, and house. Oh, and I'll take Inspector Jack Robinson too. Has anyone read the books? I'd be interested to know if they're as good as the show is.

The clothes are so very pretty in Miss Fisher's Murder Mysteries. I also appreciate how unapologetic Phryne is about how she lives her life and none of the men in it have ever tried to shame her for it.

I am adoring in an old school Murder She Wrote kind of way (by the way all 12 seasons streaming on Netflix), Death in Paradise (first two seasons on Netflix) third nd fourth season running currently on my PBS. Way too many murders in a tiny pretty place, same format but an engaging cast with great chemistry.

I love Death in Paradise. Yes, it is silly to have three police officers for what looks like an entire island, but it is still fun.

I haven't seen the most recent episodes yet, but I really love the show as well. It's such a fun cross between a cozy and a cop show!

Um... it's a very small island... :D

I haven't, but my mother, sister, and a bunch of my mother's friends have and they adore them. I think my mum has all of them, they take up a fair amount of space on her bookshelf! Probably worth checking out if you enjoy the show.

I've been listening to the Miss Fisher audiobooks and I really enjoy them.  Except for Murder and Mendelssohn.  Just don't read that one.

Gallifrey Girl wrote:Did anyone watch the first episode of M. Night Shyamalan's Wayward Pines? I enjoyed it enough to tune in again next week, and I like the idea of the 10 episode limited series.  It was sure packed with actors I knew, though many I hadn't seen in years (hey Reed Diamond!)

So I've watched the first 3 eps and I'm not really enjoying it. Is the plan to make this a stand alone, 10 episode run and have it wrapped up? Or is the idea to have it continue again next summer? If it's the former I may stick with it, but if it's the latter I think I'm through.

I'm really not sure. I thought it was 10 and done, but I could be assuming.

It's up to five episodes now, (all streaming on Fox.com) and the last one was a real game changer that explained a ton, and has definitely perked up my interest.

(Ha, I just noticed that Episode 5 is named The Truth.)

They have stated that's it's a limited run and will conclude after 10 episodes but after continuing to watch the first seasons of The Killing and Under the Dome even after they began to annoy the he'll out of me on the premise that at least the main story of the first and the entirety of the second would be wrapped up in a few more hours I decided not to even give the show a chance. One thing that does point toward it actually wrapping up is its been on the shelf for one or two years so you would think if TBTB were smart they wrapped it up if they weren't confident in it, but tv execs stupidly should never be underestimated.

Well, that wasn't what I expected after the first couple episodes.

I think my main issue at this point is I get (to a certain extent) the whole thing with the kids vs. the adults and what they should know or need to know, but what I don't get is the idea that cruelty and paranoia is a necessary and key component of making this whole thing "work." It seems like that part of it is dropped in there to make it compelling, supposedly. Weird.

Mr. Robot was the best pilot I've seen in years, probably since Lost*.  Not even Christian Slater-Nicholson could stop me from enjoying it.

*Although comparing it to Lost is not a good thing IMO.

I watched Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin's show Grace & Frankie on Netflix last week. I had higher hopes, because I like Jane Fonda and I like Lily Tomlin, and the premise sounded funny. It's supposed to be a comedy, but it's not super funny. The most comedic scenes were the ones with their kids (played by June Diane Raphael, Ethan Embry, Baron Vaughn and Brooklyn Decker). It looked like a Nora Ephron movie in terms of set decoration, which I loved, but I think they think it's funnier than it really is.
