Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
I don't know if anyone here watched the first season of TC: Just Desserts, but one of the finalists of that season was just caught with child porn. I'd be surprised, but he was so loathsome.

I was just coming in here to state that I'm rooting for Matthew all the way in tomorrow's finale, but that link up there has me sidetracked and skeeved out. I didn't watch all of S1, but I think I remember that Morgan guy being arrogant and annoying as hell. And I definitely recall that he had a child. Just ewww. Too creepy by half.

Worse, I remember being incredibly *amused* by how Morgan was annoying everyone. Eww.

Ugh, I know. I was rooting for him because Team GoDiva was so smug and annoying, and now I feel like I need a shower.
I haven't been as invested this season after (almost) all of the women were picked off one by one, but I think I started liking everyone again in last week's episode. And I developed a soft spot for Orlando, who up until now was annoying mostly because he was too petty and banal to be the real villain he clearly wanted to be.

Darn, I knew there wasn't much chance of Matthew winning. Oh well, it's nice to know Chris can use that money for his daughter's medical needs. It was sweet seeing him cry at the end because of how much his wife sacrificed to allow him time to compete on the show.
Everything the Top 3 made looked absolutely scrumptious! What cracked me up was how irritated Johnny looked about Sally not making her own chocolate showpiece. I agree that it was strategic to have Orlando focus on that particular item, but it did feel like a copout to me, too, so I can see why it bugged Johnny so much.
Also, was I the only one who freaked out about Jacques Torres showing up? Ever since the start of the season, I've been telling my sis that he needed to make an appearance, and he finally did! WOOHOO! And he worked with my fave cheftestant, which made it the finale that much better!

SO MANY PEOPLE!
I don't like seeing that many dreams dashed in an hour! So could have done without this episode and next weeks episode. That said I have never in my life been happier than having that freaking insult to douchebags everywhere get cut so early for destroying that pig.

That dude must have been humiliated. He didn't even get to cook a damn meal before getting thrown outta the kitchen!

He was so awful in his brief time I was pleased he was humiliated! Plus he freaking volunteered to break that thing down! WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT? Unless you were confident about your skills?
I felt much worse for the dude who spilled his soap and the woman who didn't get her rabbit on the plate! They seemed to have talent but were done in by the clock and there food didn't even get tasted. I mean I don't have a problem that there food wasn't tasted, just felt much worse for them that that tool who butchered butchering the meet! I apologize for that pun but I felt it was necessary!

That guy's face really creeped me out, so I was pretty relieved when he got kicked out early. I'm sad that that one lady didn't even get teh rabbit component on her plate. I had a good feeling about her and wanted to see her in the Top 16.

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
There are way too many people, but I think I actually rather like that they're doing it this way -- making them *actually cook* seems like it diminishes the producer influence (read: casting for drama instead of talent) on the way to the final cast list. Hopefully because of this, the people they end up with won't have as much obvious cannon fodder. I guess we'll see.
(Actually, now I'm wondering if there are final cooking auditions in a standard season in the first place.)

Tom wrote in his blog that usually the chefs are chosen from their audition tapes and CVs and that cooking for producers is minimal if done at all.

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
Are the people who compete in the groups but don't make Top 16 allowed to try again in the future? I'm assuming they aren't ineligible just because they've made it onto the very first competitive part of this season, right?

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
I would think they're allowed to try again, even though that plus the "only 16 slots in the house" would be very Top Model-esque. (Though they also did it on Project Runway, the season they let Daniel Franco come back.)

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
That's what I thought, punkysdilemma. It just seems unfair if they're ineligible for upcoming seasons, and besides, I've heard the culinary community is really quite small, so the producers probably don't wanna eliminate a bunch of contestants from the pool.
BTW, I just watched all of TC Canada S1, and I really enjoyed it. Has anyone else seen it, and if so, who were your fave cheftestants? There were so many memorable people for me, including Dustin (with his irrepressible grin) and Francois, who is one of the funniest TC competitors I can recall.

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
Dustin and Francois were two of my favourites too. Shortly after Top Chef Canada finished, my husband and I randomly watched an episode of Iron Chef America featuring Sussur Lee, and were way too excited to see that Dustin was there too, as one of his sous-chefs. Still with the same grin.
Of the final three, I was rooting for Connie. I live in the city where Dale opened his restaurant, Ensemble (which features such Top Chef fare as "Precious Pavlova", that reconstructed pavlova the judges panned him for...) but can't decide if I want to eat there, because I disliked him so much on the show. I'm sure the food is tasty, though.

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
I was rooting for Connie most of the season, but by the end of the whole thing, I was really bored with her and her food. In fact, I didn't care for any of the Top 3 cheftesants. I liked Dale in the first ep, and then he just got way too intense and overbearing, and it was obvious Rob would be a top contender from the very start and yet something about him really irked me the entire season. They were a very talented finale group, for sure, and as douchey as Dale often seemed, it was really sweet hearing him whisper "We did it, buddy" and "I told you we could do it" to his kid after he was crowned winner.
It's awesome to hear that Dustin is still tight with Sussur! I can't get over my disappointment that Sussur didn't win TC Masters in his season. I just thought he was remarkably talented and creative and really amazing to watch in the kitchen. I swear it looked as if the tape were being sped up when they'd do close-ups of him chopping veggies!

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
Not sure how I feel about this Last Chance Kitchen business, yes every season there are eliminations that I don't think are quite fair, it seems the chef who doesn't have to participate in tough challenges and sit around in the stew room for hours during judge's table is going to have an unfair advantage. Hopefully, they at least give them a day off to rest.
I felt bad for Janine, having to cook three times and each time being told she just didn't quite measure up.

I really warmed up to Janine in that second ep and was hoping she'd beat Grayson, who I also happen to like.
Seeing Edward bleeding profusely just squicked me the eff out, but I admired how he soldiered through it even as the medical personnel tried to administer some first aid! It was the exact opposite of how lame Jamie was in TC All-Stars when she got that slight cut and went off to the hospital to get stitches. I will forever roll my eyes thinking about that.

I wonder if either team could have assigned someone entirely to making tortillas and had that be their dish -- a fresh tortilla is a thing of beauty, they really, really should have had someone do it.
Flour tortilla enchilada is like El Torito or something. Yig.

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
I really don't get why the 3 other chefs who were at the counter with Keith didn't object to buying cooked shrimp. Stupid asses. That would've been such an easy thing to avoid. Then again, the judges were all so appalled that apparently it should've been beyond obvious that pre-cooked shrimp was not something to ever consider purchasing.
At this point, I feel like I'm rooting for so many people. I like Beverly, Dakota, Richie, Paul, and probably a few others who I can'r recall at the moment. I'm always hoping there'll be an Angeleno I can cheer on, and Dakota is it this season!

Re: Top Chef (plus Masters, Just Desserts)
Part of me was annoyed that no one said anything about the shrimp but another part of me was annoyed that Keith, the seafood guy, needed someone to tell him "don't get the cooked shrimp."
But Keith getting the wrong shrimp isn't why they lost and I felt like he was thrown under the bus.

Dude, that's what I was most shocked about! I was like, "Isn't Keith the dude who specializes in seafood? WTF was he thinking?" But yeah, Sarah totally threw him under the bus. She never even had to mention the shrimp cocktail that didn't happen, and she's also could have told him which sorta tortillas he oughta use. And Lindsay lived in Mexico for 2-3 years, so I was actually a bit more shocked that she didn't go home for two dishes that sucked. She should've had her flavor profiles and prep/cooking techniques down pat regardless of having to switch up the menu because of the shrimp debacle!

John Besh's face dealing with the Dallas hosts critiques, never failed to crack my shit up. I swear he and Tom switched seats at the last table just so they could roll their eyes at one another.
Sad to see Chuy go home though he did win LCK.
