Jezebel is claiming that Lana del Ray has single-handedly ruined Saturday Night Live with her terrible performance. I didn't think it was that bad. She looked awkward, but she may have been nervous, and she could have enunciated a bit better, but she can't possibly be the worst musical act in SNL's history - that honour may go to Ashlee Simpson.

I think a lot of the Lana Del Ray hate has been stoked by the way she has been overly hyped and her image -- a normal looking woman who has not had the plastic surgery done that Lana has probably wouldn't have gotten that type of attention for her music so early on in her career.

That said, is it just me or has the quality of the writing at Jezebel really taken a nosedive? It has devolved into these catty, overly sarcastic rants that would fit right in over at Perez's site. I don't even look at it much any more, The Hairpin is much more thoughtful and nice.

Oh yes! Ever since laurelin_kit pointed me in the direction of the Hairpin, I am a huge cheerleader for them. The articles are about ten thousand times better than Jezebel's these days, and the commenters are (by and large) remarkably sane and friendly people.

Another vote for the Hairpin. I find them much funnier and the articles are more informative and better written than Jezebel.

Is it wrong that I think it's hysterical that Brian Williams so hated it that he felt the need to write an email to Nick Denton to make sure it didn't fall through the cracks and not get ripped apart by Gawker?

I thought it was pretty funny, but I also kind of thought Brian Williams would be better than that. I don't know why, I just thought he'd be above decrying 'hipsters' and poor performances on SNL.

And see, this actually made me like him more. He's petty, just like me! (Even though I didn't see the performance, so I can't actually comment.)

If they had worried more about her voice than about her Valley of the Barbie dolls getup, then she might not have crashed. Still, there are worse performances.

And you have the lovely painting of the same name as your icon! I definitely get a kick out of seeing SFers commenting on The Hairpin, since it's now my other favorite place on the internet. I'm Daisy Razor over there.

Seriously, though, that is weird as hell. I feel awful for his family, not knowing what really happened.

Another thing I found off a link on Gawker but have no idea where to put: Fascinating story of a Russian family that fled into the Siberian wilderness to escape religious prosecution and remained out of contact with the outside world for more than 40 years.

The front page is an epic flounce-out.

I was very critical of it, but damn I'm gonna miss it. Like Fametracker, there wasn't much else like it and now its gone too.

Wow, that was really flouncy. I'm glad their other properties aren't going to be shut down too.
