Re: Interesting News Items
What's so weird about a quarter-century game of tag between grown men?
Seriously, that is both adorable and hilarious in its dorkiness.

My Best Friends are from the Internet. I've met nearly 20 Snarkers, so I would have to agree!

I met my husband online when I was fifteen. So I agree. It is incredibly weird and awesome at the same time. I'm sometimes a little annoyed that I never get to meet Snarkers. Stupid geography.

If you guys ever get that ferry running again, I'll come up for a day or something! I want to walk in Newfoundland.

400 Russians injured by meteorite. I hope Putin has Bruce Willis on autodial, along with Aerosmith and Billy Bob Thornton. The Emergency Ministry described it as a shower of fireballs and urged people not to panic. So FYI -- if you ever hear a huge bang then feel an aftershock and the government tells you it's raining fire, NBD. *shrug*
Seriously though, being completely skeptical of Russian transparency I do like that the article mentions that the town was told to stay inside unless picking up children from school and oh, by the way....some background radiation is completely normal.

Re: Interesting News Items
There have been dozens of videos of this from Russian dashboard cams on YouTube. I would say it's exactly what it sounds like, a big fiery ball from outer space. BadAstronomer has a good roundup of movies and the advantage of being an actual astronomer and all.

One Russian politician is claiming it wasn't a meteorite but weapons by Americans. Yes, because that's exactly where we'd aim.

Apparently it is where a lot of nuclear work is done. I just find it hard to believe we'd come so close and miss!

A UK police service tries to get a witness statement from a police dog. The dog's handler told them several times that PD = police dog, but when they kept pushing the issue he decided to let the dog make his statement.

I love that story so much. Randomly in my head I've sporatically been saying to myself (in some sort of doggie voice), "Good boy. Good boy, Peach." And I keep cracking myself up.

It's the "I chase him. I bite him. Bad man," part that absolutely slays me. Bad man indeed, Peach!

I work with a bunch of writers and sent that around. One of them printed it out on our huge color printer as a poster and hung it in everyone's cube/office with the tagline "Please check your sources."

That is all kinds of cool. I was average for my area (SE Michigan) for everything except the "highway" - I call it an expressway, which wasn't even one of the options.

Welp. I thought I knew all of the weird things being from Philly has done to my vernacular, but I never realized that "sear-up" (#27) was not the common pronunciation.
I'll never forget the confused looks on my (mostly midwestern) college friends' faces the first time I told them I had to go to the "MAC machine".

Re: Interesting News Items
Well, this isn't interesting so much as horrifying, but it is worth reading all the way through. Reuters Investigates has a 5 part report called "The Child Exchange: Inside America's Underground Market for Adopted Children" about horrible, horrible people swapping their adopted kids on the internet because they don't want them anymore. Heartbreaking.

Yeah, as I read that, I kept thinking I couldn't possibly be more horrified. And I kept getting proven wrong. I had to stop clicking on the interactive diagram where you can read the actual Yahoo group posts because I was about to punch my monitor.

Re: Interesting News Items
At the bottom of it, all of these people do not seem to have fully accepted the idea of adopting. Like, it's not just taking home a child and seeing how it works out. That is now YOUR child. If you had birthed that child, and he/she started having behavioral problems, you would deal with those problems. You wouldn't just feel like giving them up to a stranger's family was an option, and you wouldn't just assume that every issue they had was impossible to overcome. While I'm sure some of those children did have RAD, many of them just seemed to be going through normal adolescent stuff, and their "parents" seemed to just want a perfect angel and anything less was too inconvenient for their lifestyle.
There's a special place in hell for the parents who expressed hatred for their children, and the ones who seriously ADMITTED to not caring at all what happened to the kids once they dropped them with whatever sociopaths they found on the internet.
