I'm sure. I just laughed at their suggested application. YOU DON'T HAVE TO PUT DOWN THE CONTROLLER!

Do we no longer have a Tennis thread? Because they've been playing zombie tennis http://tinyurl.com/8x8v25m at the Grand Slam again . Zombie tennis is so much more LOL than vampire baseball. I miss the old Zombie Tennis recap, it was awesome. http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2010/jun/23/wimbledon-2010-tennis-live

Re: Interesting News Items
A Reuters fluff piece on leap day birthdays totally goes off the rails in the last paragraph:
For most people, February 29 is a quirky extra day to enjoy life but for at least one person it's Doomsday. Arizona death row inmate Robert Henry Moormann, 63, is scheduled to be executed on Leap Day for beating, stabbing and strangling his adoptive mother and dismembering her body during a "compassionate furlough" from prison to visit her in 1984.

Re: Interesting News Items
It makes me wonder why the judge chose that day. Is there an established timeframe from sentencing to it being caried out?
In other news, you know the Muslims rioting about the Korans being accidentally destroyed? I want to send them this story, about September 11 remains being accidentally dumped in the river. To show them that it wasn't malice, people just screw up sometimes, no matter how important the object in question.

Encyclopedia Britannica to give up print publishing, focussing on online articles. I'm not surprised. Above even the rest of the internet and the related decline of print, Wikipedia has been treading on their turf quite heavily.

Oh my goodness. When I recommended that we get rid of the print version a couple of years ago from the Reference desk it was like I was asking them to cut off an arm. Now that we need space guess what is going? *head desk*

Re: Interesting News Items
It's too bad, because they were gorgeous books. Leather covers, gold embossing, high quality paper. I owned a set but my dad threw it out without asking me when I was away at college. (Yes, I'm still angry about this.) I hate to say it, but I don't think they will continue making the online version for very long. The competition from Wikipedia is too intense. Their articles on scientific topics are really good, especially if you want the POV of the particular expert who wrote the article.

Oh man, that makes me sad. Remember these commercials?
I always wanted a set, but I had to make due with the Funk & Wagnalls that we got from the A&P a little at a time. But I do still have a set of World Books from the 1960s that my neighbor gave me. They're binding is neat.

Back in middle school, when we were learning to write term papers, we would have to go over the steps with our teacher - outline, notecards, etc. One of my teachers told us that he could always tell when we'd been using the Britannica, because our notecards would have spelling quirks like "colour."

And now, some possibly good news! Chocolate helps lower BMI.
However, I wouldn't mind seeing a second study to correlate the results before I go on a binge.

Well, that's one. I'm not sure how big a proper population sample should be, but one is better than none. :)

Re: Interesting News Items
Yesterday I read this story about a Philadelphia Catholic high school prom and was just...baffled. It had never occurred to me that some schools (including, according to Twitter peeps, some public schools) have a rule against kids going solo to proms.
Also wondering if the girl would have been allowed to go if her date was another girl.

White tiger cubs born in the Ukraine. Cute, but they make a noise very similar to what I imagine dying crows sound like.

That's awful! I went to prom with a group of friends, no dates, and had a great time.Menshevixen wrote:Yesterday I read this story about a Philadelphia Catholic high school prom and was just...baffled. Honestly, I'd think they would want to encourage kids to go stag, since it's such a cliche to lose your virginity to your boyfriend/girlfriend the night of prom.

...
Jeez. I didn't even go to my prom, I have to admit, but I liked the possibility of going alone. (Hated dancing, still do, didn't care for standing around awkwardly which I figured was the other option. Since that's what happened at every previous dance.)

Oldest Mayan calendar found, doesn't predict the end of the world. Okay, first they got us all worked up about it, now they're releasing evidence that denies it? Damn you, ancient Mayans! *Shakes fist.*
