Re: Interesting News Items
So, seems a woman named Katy had her iPhone stolen while on a Disney cruise in April. Then, just recently, a bunch of mysterious photos started showing up in her Facebook account. They appear to be the person with her phone - a crew member on the ship. She put together an album complete with captions, and, at the urging of her friends, made the album public so everyone could see. The news media have picked up the story, and, as I write, there are nearly 3,500 over 3,500 shares. (The number went up as I was typing this post. Heh.)
Someone's going to have a hard time finding new employment. And I hope Katy gets free passes to Disney World for life.

Could she have just lost it and he found it and he didn't turn it in? Stole seems pretty harsh. Plus how dumb is he to post his photos to her Facebook page?

It's because of how she had her photostream set up, it went to the cloud and then went to her facebook page, so it wasn't like he was doing it intentionally.
Her phone has been recovered and he has been put on administrative leave while they investigate.
It seems at there very least he would be violating a policy of what an Employee should do with anything they find on the ship.

I love the captions. ("Nelson likes to take pictures of buildings in Mexico with stolen phones.") I am reading them in this sing-song voice.Instant Monkeys wrote:That is HILARIOUS.

Grip this quote with your cerebral tentacle, dudes:
WHAT DOES THAT EVEN MEAN? From this article.
“The rugged West of mythic stature has long been a regulated place, if only because the federal government is such a presence as to public lands, public employees, public agencies, the military,” said William Francis Deverell, a University of Southern California history professor and director of the Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West. “And the notion of the Edenic West was one that had to be sculpted, in minds and in measures, hence myths and regulations.”

10 million punds of maple syrup missing from the global strategic maple syrup reserves. The global strategic maple syrup reserve sounds like something HIMYM would make up but it's a real thing. People seem to think the barrels were empty rather than someone actually stealing 10 million pounds of syrup. I think that's something only the Leverage gang can pull off.

Elliott would definitely be into liberating a large quantity of real maple syrup.

The 2012 Ig Nobel Prizes have been announced!
I think the Literature Prize is my favorite, but they are all examples of outstanding research and scholarship.

The Literature Prize was up there, but I think my favorite was the one for MRIing the brain of a dead salmon...and finding activity. My reasoning is that the salmon study had a real and important point to make about poor use of statistics, as well as being hilarious.

I actually think the one about turning ammunition into lab diamonds is pretty awesome.

Yeah, from the title it looked like part of it was about the importance of multiple data points and methods of measurement. One thing I love about the IgNobels is that they reward ridiculous studies, but it's always actual, real science.

A moose was seen wandering the streets of Halifax this morning. Even though we are in eastern Canada, this is not a common sighting. Most people have only seen a moose on TV or in a zoo or wildlife park. The moose was finally cornered in a Halifax backyard, sedated, and is now on his way to the Shubenacadie Wildlife Park where hopefully he will meet a nice lady moose and have lots of moose babies. Here are some pictures, and I am killing myself laughing at some of the comments.

HAH. One of my favorite bands just put out a kids album this week, featuring a song called "Moose on the Loose." What a publicity tie-in!

When they (Ozomatli, for those playing along at home) came out with "Gay Vatos in Love" I thought I could not love them more. Now I'm all, "yep, love them more."katesti wrote:IT IS THE BEST. The wee one agrees.

Kentucky restaurant shut down after roadkill found in kitchen.
The roadkill was apparently a deer stuffed into a trash can. "There was actually a blood trail they were mopping up behind the garbage can," customer Katie Hopkins said. "There was like a tail, and like a foot and a leg sticking out of the garbage can, and they wheeled it straight back into the kitchen."

Re: Interesting News Items
OK, so I kinda skimmed this, and I saw the sentence "Several types of sharks, including a great white, are among the predator species to have been tallied..."
And I read it as "tailed," instead of "tallied." And between that and references to a videocamera, at first I thought the octopi had FIGURED OUT HOW VIDEOCAMERAS WORKED and were like, stalking sharks with the camera, I don't know, to get dirt on them or something. I realize this is ridiculous, and I reread it and quickly realized that was way off base, but I am not kidding you guys, I felt a little frisson of genuine fright. Goddamn octopi. YOU JUST NEVER KNOW.
