Hee, the Olympics are almost over, and we didn't even have a thread for them!

Did anyone else watch the pole vaulting yesterday? I was cheering for the Canadian who was heavily favourited, but he had a really tough time and was out very early. Leaving a French guy to win, the current world record holder (and he was amazing, made it look effortless!)

And then out of nowhere the Brazilian guy, who's young and not as experienced, but has still done well (I think they said he'd placed 14th at an event earlier this year) started hitting heights he'd never even done before. The crowd were cheering, he's going to get the silver no matter what, and he manages to get yet another personal best (over 6 meters - apparently only 16 people ever have done that height!) and wins the gold. I was so happy for him!

The American who came in 3rd seemed so nice - he was clapping for everyone, head cheerleader.

That young Brazilian pole vaulter must have been lifted by the enthusiasm of the local fans. What a thrill for him to do so well in front of the hometown crowd.

I was delighted by the balance-beam performance of Sanne Wevers, the Dutch woman who won gold in that event last night. Her routine was so different from everyone else's - pirouettes like crazy, including a triple! Hard to do on the ground, let alone on the beam.

I love the Olympics, but I'll be glad to be able to go to sleep at my regular bedtime after they end.

I found that beam performance very ...odd! It was just *so* different from what all the other girls were doing that it made it hard to compare. She had so few of the more 'active' elements (aerials etc) that even though her piroutettes and whatnot were amazing to watch, it almost felt like there should be two different beam competitions, one for the dancier elements and one for the tumbling.

I've been watching a lot of sports that I otherwise never see or hear about and therefore know next to nothing.

Canoeing is weird - the canoes are so narrow that they don't sit, they kneel on one leg! So strange looking! And then I was flumoxed by how the were managing to paddle only on one side yet still go straight. (Hubby explained about the different strokes. I had no idea!)

Men's rings exhausts me and gives me jelly arms just watching.

I couldn't believe the men that ran hurdles in the pouring rain. It was bucketing down! Don't know how they didn't slip.

The one false start and you're out for the track events seems so harsh!

I watched a woman throwing the hammer and was like six meters further than everyone else. Crazy!

They used to have a "free" false start - you got eliminated for a second one, but not the first. It may even have been that a first false-starter wasn't penalized, but the second false start, even if it was a different runner, resulted in elimination. My memory is a little vague, but certainly there used to be false starts that didn't eliminate the runners.

I think what happened is that racers started false-starting on purpose, which makes the other racers nervous about starting. Hence, the current draconian rule.

Rings is my favorite men's gymnastics event. It takes so much strength to do them well.

Did you see the Russian male diver in the 3-meter springboard who face-planted during the semis after barely making it past the first round? Oof. He definitely had a Bad Week at the Office.

No, I didn't see that round of diving, though I did catch the final. Poor guy!

The women's gymnastics floor routines were spectacular. Simone is amazing!

Last night I watched the men's high jump, which was fun and tense. There was one guy where the bar only fell off after the judge had waved the white flag, and they didn't count it. He argued the point but apparently the rule is it has to stay on til you get off the mat.

To me, Laurie Hernandez looks a lot like Kiersey Clemons

So, this thing with the four swimmers is bonkers. I rolled my eyes So HARD when one of the officials was going on like, "Well, they're young and excited, boys will be boys." Ryan Lochte is 32. I was being held to a higher standard of behavior when I was half his age.

I still don't understand the why. Seriously, this is the stupidest reason to lie to the police, ever.
