You are completely right about that website. It's far superior to the websites of many real universities I could name. Plus it's funnier.

That is fantastic, Instant Monkeys. They have everything about university Web sites spot on!

I have been blasting that website to everyone I know since you linked it on FB this morning, Monkeys. It means so much to hear your praise, from your point of view as a professional university website connoisseur/maker.

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
Oh lordy, maker definitely not; I couldn't come anywhere NEAR to even beginning to conceptualize putting together a site on that level. But I have spent enough time poking around ours lately to enjoy it from that point of view (and I sent it to our web team, though they are mostly tech folks; the design of our site was done by consultants). I'm starting to think one reason it resonates so strongly with me is that it MAY be partly based on my school's main website...the designs of the front pages when looked at next to each other are REAL similar, hee hee.
I just really admire stuff like this that is SO completely realized and well done (not coincidentally, it's one of the reasons I admire Pixar so much). Design aside, there is a HELL of a lot of copy in that thing, and whether or not they cannibalized most of it from other .edu websites, it is totally seamless. And funny. I love Pixar. And I love gigantic corporate marketing budgets.

It looks a lot like UPenn's site too.

It is an awesome website... I just realized you can buy everything in the MU store. Now I need a travel mug.

Oh yes. You can buy stuff. At least the "giving" page isn't active so you can't just give money directly to Disney/Pixar, hee hee. I mean, who doesn't want to help talented monsters with financial need? IT SEEMS LIKE A GOOD CAUSE.

It wouldn't let me choose the six-armed version. I guess a lot of spider-teenagers got sweaters for Christmas this year.

That's pretty awesome. It's obvious an actual SW fan answered it. You know that whoever it was, they were grinning the whole time, just like us reading it.

The Lutheran Insult Generator!
I was frightened and thought I was dreaming, it was such a thunderclap, such a great horrid fart did you let go here! You certainly pressed with great might to let out such a thunderous fart - it is a wonder that it did not tear your hole and belly apart!

Scientific American publishes a paper online using physics to prove that Wash didn't die at the end of Serenity. As io9 said, science is finally used for its most noble purpose!

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
It seems to me that the article proves that Wash *did* die - it concludes that the force of the spear would have been significantly greater than the force of a "hypervelocity bullet" like the paint fleck in space. To a degree that unless the windows on Serenity were considerably more durable than assumed minimum safety standards the spear probably would have split Wash in half and lodged itself in the back of the cockpit rather than just impaled him.
But maybe I'm reading that wrong. I admit the math goes a bit over my head at this time of morning, but the author uses words like "unfortunately" and "Wash didn't stand a chance".

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
I read that last week. The math is screwed up, although I noticed an update at the bottom that brings it closer to being correct. Never trust physics analyses in Wired (SciAm republished Wired), because I've yet to see them do one without major errors. The ones from Wolfram Alpha tend to be better. (WA did Baumgardener's jump.) And yes, even with their revision Wired concluded Wash died.

physics aside, the series’ continued existence would be no guarantee that Wash would have survived Joss Whedon.

Well, that's what I get for having stopped reading half way through and then taking the io9 article's word for it that that's what the paper said! I'm not dumb, I have a master's degree in a very difficult field, but physics is beyond me! I'm a very, very right brained person and half way through that paper, my brain started hurting, so I was like "I'm not in grad school anymore, I don't have to force myself to finish any kind of reading!" Oh well.

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
The Worst Things for Sale! A blog about all the weird and useless crap you can find on the internet, with snarky commentary.
The entry that has pictures of two sets of similar-looking implements and reads "On the left is a set of crochet hooks. On the right is a set of urethral sounds. Only one of these is meant to be shoved up your lemonade pipe. Choose wisely." startled a laugh out of me so loud I scared all three of the cats.
