I just went back on the NPR site and found that they have tons of top 50/100 lists. Uh oh, productivity.
Why are Anastasia Krupnik and Where's Waldo on the 100 Most Frequently Challenged book list?

I know that the original Where's Waldo had a topless woman on the beach. That's why.

Dunno about Waldo, but the first Anastasia Krupnik book has the word "shit" in it. ZOMG!

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
Plus, in Anastasia, isn't there a part where her little brother gets hurt and she tells her mom that she'd do anything, even join the Ku Klux Klan, if only her brother would get better? I remember that because I'd never heard of the Klan before so I assumed it must be some kind of boring adult social club, like where people golf and stuff, so obviously a kid wouldn't want to join. I could imagine some book challenges over that part.
...And I just googled it. It was banned for references to beer and Playboy magazine. Huh.

When I was in Library School, I found a case where Wizard of Oz was challenged (I don't recall if it was actually banned) because the characters didn't ask for God's help in getting out of Oz.

Sylvester and the Magic Pebble was banned because in its animal world the cops were portrayed by pigs, and they felt that it would cause kids to disrespect police officers.

SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK FOR LIFE, BITCHES!
Ten-year-old me was kind of a wuss. I forced myself to read those books to toughen myself up. I figured I wouldn't be afraid of the dark any more if I could desensitize myself to the horrific illustrations in them.

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
The stories weren't that scary but those illustrations scarred me for life. I had to put a post-it note over the one about the bride who got locked in the trunk on her wedding day because it was so scary.
Is it wrong that I want my son to have the original versions rather than the new, boringly-illustrated ones? I won't introduce him to them till he's old enough, of course.

*fistbump* I loved those books so much. I was also terrified of the illustrations.Unlucky Bear wrote:SCARY STORIES TO TELL IN THE DARK FOR LIFE, BITCHES!

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
Not at all, because the new ones suck. The school I work at still has the books with the original illustrations in the library, and it wasn't until this past spring that the Book Fair started selling the new versions rather than the old ones. I was sooooo disappointed. I don't think kids today are as into those books as my generation was, but it's still sad to see the end of an era.inversed wrote:Is it wrong that I want my son to have the original versions rather than the new, boringly-illustrated ones? Oh, this is really cute! And visually interesting! I'm all caught up, not realizing it was being posted after the fact. I'm curious to see what happens!

I was like "WHAT HAPPENED NEXT? This was months ago" until I realized it was being posted after the fact. I even googled it to make sure everyone was ok.
I'm calling it - will be a movie within 2 years.

Actual Teen Adult Teen is a tumblr comparing actors playing teens to what they actually looked like as teens of the age they're playing. It's amazing. See Daniel Sharman from Teen Wolf, Leonardo DiCaprio, Topher Grace, Anna Kendrick, Josh Hutcherson and Jennifer Lawrence (I would watch the shit out of that version of Hunger Games), and their patron saint Bianca Lawson, who has been playing a teen on TV for 20 years.

Omg, I had no idea Ms Morell in Teen Wolf was in Buffy! Woman seriously has not aged through the years. There must a picture of herself in the attic somewhere...

Whoa, Calista Flockhart has one of the best yearbook photos I've ever seen. And apparently didn't age much over 13 years. (She should try big hair again.)
I totally forgot how crazy-young they're supposed to be in The Birdcage.

Today's Google Doodle honors Erwin Schrodinger. As you might expect, there is a (cartoon) cat.

Good guess. I'm thinking Ginnifer Goodwin and some Chris Evans-lite type for the inevitable movie.

Does anyone know what's going on at TVTropes? It seems like a lot of the content pages are suddenly missing.

The Comically Vintage tumblr takes panels from classic comics out of context, which is pretty amusing.

Re: Absurd and Humorous Websites
An MRA dudebro take on iOS 7. Oh Internet.
ETA: apparently he notes he is gay somewhere in there. I didn't make it that far.
Manly solid colors. The color scheme is almost unbearable if you’re a man that appreciates the stronger, richer and more detailed icons in iOS 6.The first time you see the iOS 7 icons, it feels like somebody kicked you in the gut with no warning and for absolutely no reason.
iOS 7: Masculine Versus Feminine
There’s a real gender issue with the iOS 7 icon color scheme. The iOS 7 beta icons practically ooze estrogen! The manly, solid colors and design found in iOS 6 have been chopped off as viciously as Lord Varys’ manhood in Game of Thrones. In short, iOS 7 is a kaleidoscope of soft pastels that overwhelm male eyeballs, while bathing men in a sea of soft, vapid nothingness. The icons also offer precious little in terms of informational value (see the Game Center icon below).

He is ALSO That Guy on the internet who has to respond to every. single. comment. And anyone who disagrees with him is a "PC drone," of course. What a fucking tool.
