Jane Eyre, Or: The Bride of Edward 'Crazypants' Rochester

EVIL SCHOOL: Hi Jane. Psychological and physical torture?
JANE EYRE: God damn.
HELEN BURNS: Would you like to be friends? I love you, Jane, and I also love Jesus.
JANE EYRE: I'm getting a bad feeling about who's going to be enjoying your company like, next week. I see Jesus's name written all over your dance card.
HELEN BURNS: Nonsense. *coughs up blood* It's just a touch of TB, I'll be right as rain in no time!

Here's something for those of you working on final papers for the semester. For every 100 words you type, a new picture of a kitten pops up! I wish I'd had this back in grad school when I had to write papers nonstop and every single sentence was like pulling teeth because I hated writing and hated grad school and wanted to be done. This could have helped!

I agree. This is a good use of reinforcement. I'll need to show this to my students in my learning and behaviour modification class!

Would You Like to Buy a Monkey?

Last weekend at a thrift shop I found a small, stuffed monkey, which seemed to have some sort of snout leprosy and would probably murder us in our sleep.

I named him “Copernicus”.

me: He smells like what I would imagine syphilis smells like.

Seriously, I need those valentine's day cards.

There must be a guy at AMC that stops you after one sentence of your pitch and says, “whoa whoa, save some of this for season two!”
That sure explains The Killing.

Stunning colour photos of Russia from a century ago. I'm so used to seeing the past in black and white that these are absolutely astonishing. I love the national costumes, and the landscapes are so beautiful.

That was incredible. I kept scrolling and saying "Wow!" at each new photo.

That they could make color like that 100 years ago was something I didn't know, but even more amazing is the clarity of the images. So crisp and not at all grainy like most of the photos we see from that time.

You can tell they all use a really long exposure time, laddical, from the blur in anything moving in the photos. Long exposure in bright light means not much noise. Also, this is 1910s, not 18--, so photography was pretty far along.

They seem to be combining three photos taken through different color filters (red, green, blue) which will tend to average out the noise too. For instance, this one shows the artifacts you get from that process in the color fringes in the water.

I wasn't sure where to put this, exactly, but there is an entire TV Tropes page for 'Inspector Spacetime', the 'Doctor Who' parody they created on 'Community.' That page is one 'Doctor Who' in-joke after another! So funny!

I think my favorite part was when they were listing some of the Associates:
Spoiler:
The Inspector's Associates provide something unique to the cast with each new addition, such as classic favorites the math and English teachers Irma and Bart, the Gaelic swordsman Aiden, the late Jeffrey, the barbarian princess Reena, fellow Infinity Knight Lunda, the genius Yosif, and the long-runner Mary Sue. More recent Associates include Lily Taylor, Captain James Haggard, the Magnificent Bastard Yorke, Constable Wigglesworth, Angelica "Angie" Lake, and Rory Williams.

I got to that last one and nearly woke everyone up with my cackling.

Insects cause Ultimate Frisbee!

Google Correlate is so much fun. You enter a search term and it FINDS things that correlate well with it, like Google Trends in reverse. (If playing with Google Correlate for a while doesn't convince you of the UTTER SILLINESS in so many sociological studies, I don't know what will.)
