Re: Upcoming Films
All I can think watching that trailer is that it seems like he'll end up murdering her. It's creepy.

Re: Upcoming Films
In other news, I have no idea what's going on with my cinema. Lucy, which was coming out on the first, seems to have vanished off the schedule. However, there are advance screenings of GOTG on the first, which officially comes out here on the seventh. That's a more than fair tradeoff, I feel.

Re: Upcoming Films
That 50 Shades trailer wasn't nearly as dire as I thought it could be, but I may have been distracted by how good Jamie Dornan looks in a suit. That aside, the dialogue was pretty terrible, which tells me that MAJOR issue associated with the book wasn't addressed. I know I shouldn't be surprised by that, but I was sort of hoping the screenwriter would be able to fix some of that.

I remember hearing LJ James was insisting on creative control...so.
I'll say that I thought the trailer looked more interesting than the book but that is not saying much. It looked to me like the people involved did as much as they could but its not going to be enough.
I'll watch it when it leaks though because dat ass.

It's just like 9 1/2 Weeks, only without the charisma of the actors, the raw sexuality, the mildly interesting direction, or the screenplay that didn't come across like a Harelquin Romance had a baby with a bondage magazine. I just feel bad for everyone involved in this, and suspect that while it will make money, it won't do wonders for anyone's careers.

Re: Upcoming Films
I tried to read 50 Shades because a coworker wouldn't stop nagging me. I couldn't finish it. The sex scenes were laughable and the writing was so very bad. I have to admit though that if you look at the trailer as a separate entity from the book, I actually kind of liked it. Jamie Dornan is working for me and I have a soft spot for Dakota Johnson because I enjoyed her on Ben and Kate. Obviously this isn't going to win any awards, but it could be a decent guilty pleasure movie - if they have the sense to leave out all that inner goddess bullshit.

Re: Upcoming Films
Jamie Dornan is convincingly intense and dangerous, probably because everything I see him in is tainted by The Fall. He was too damn good in that role.
It's amusing that Hollywood's idea of portraying a 'mousy' character still consists of giving some bland starlet a dye-job and dressing her in the Cardigan of Eternal Spinsterhood. It's amazing how the magical powers of makeovers and abusive boyfriends can boost your self-image.

Re: Upcoming Films
But I wear glasses and ponytails all the time and wear a cardigan from time to time and I've not encountered a single rich guy propositioning me or the like. Maybe that's because I can actually walk into a room without tripping.
It probably wouldn't work out too well if one did take an interest in me because I am very fond of my own way so every time he'd tell me what to do, I'd just do whatever the hell I wanted and turn his red room into a library after spending all his money on IKEA bookshelves. It would be so great...
I agree, I thought the trailer made the story seem a bit interesting but it all depends on how they do the sex scenes. If they can tone down Christian Grey's raging control asshole ways and not have people sitting there with embarrassment or laughing, they might have a chance.
If this bombs, I think Jamie Dornan has a better chance of getting away with it than Charlie Hunnam would have had.

Re: Upcoming Films
Jamie Dornan does nothing for me (though apparently I need to watch the Fall); all I could do as I watched was wonder why they didn't bother to cast a grownup. Lots of second-hand embarrassment in the trailer. If I do see it, it will be with a snarky friend and a purse full of wine.

Re: Upcoming Films
I'm not sure watching The Fall would help with the Dornan thing. I think he's a good actor, and physically impeccable, but I have a hard time finding him attractive because of that character. I'd love to see him in something where he didn't play a creep though!

Re: Upcoming Films
I think Dornan is hot, but yeah NOT as the serial killer, unlike say Dexter, he truly embodies the sociopathy and lack of connection to other humans. Although I do like that as meta/subtext to his 50 Shades character.
That's an interesting point, and I think it's very true, Dornan's profile is much lower in the states, and if it bombs the stink won't stick to him like it would to the higher profile Hunam, while if it succeeds my guess is Sam Taylor Wood and the cast will get much of the credit. All three have enough credibility outside this to not be sunk by EL James terrible terrible story and dialogue.

The Glen wrote:I just found the trailer tedious and boring. All I know about Fifty Shades is what I read in this blog, but I think with the material they had to work with, dull is a great improvement over screamingly awful.
OMG you guys. I haven't read the books, and while I was vaguely aware of the plot, I had NO IDEA how awful they were until I read the above link. Who finds that hot? It's like E. L. James thought, "Hmmm, Edward Cullen isn't creepy enough -- let's turn the douchbag stalker knob up to eleven."
How was something like this a best seller????? It makes me want to turn in my woman-card.

Re: Upcoming Films
In some ways it became a best-seller through some very savvy marketing. I happened to be watching "Good Morning, America" one morning while getting ready to go to work at the library when I heard them talking about the newest publishing sensation sweeping the nation. Oddly enough, neither I nor my co-workers had ever heard of it. We checked the catalog system and there was literally 1 copy available in the entire state library system. By the end of the day, however, we'd had numerous requests for it and ended up buying multiple copies. They were also quite smart to have the sequels published within 6 months of the first being released.

Isn't the author actually in PR or some similar career?

Re: Upcoming Films
I just saw that The Trip to Italy is coming out next week, and I'm really looking forward to it. The first movie that Michael Winterbottom did with Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, The Trip, was one of my favourite movies of 2011 because it had everything I could want in a movie: gorgeous landscapes, food porn, and funny banter. This one looks great too.

Sadly, I haven't; I don't think it ever aired in Canada as a TV show, and I couldn't track it down on region 1 DVDs. I could only find the movie version.

Hee. I know they made a boxset in the UK with all the episodes of the first and second series so it might come here too. (Or you know, I may end up also stumbling upon it in a perfectly legal other way.)

I am actually really excited about that. I feel like the team behind that film and that test footage and even Ryan Reynolds seem to really GET that character.

Wait, this is actually happening?! I thought it would be stuck in development hell for all eternity, like the Sandman or Runaways movies. Happy birthday to me!
