Macular degeneration is something that happens to most people as they age. Given her comment about her mom, it might strike her family a little earlier than most. It can't be reversed, but the degeneration can be stopped with medication. It's the center of the eye, peripheral vision remains.

Doesn't it depend on the type of macular degeneration? I'm pretty sure one is a natural consequence of the aging process and results in overall poorer vision while the other type can strike at any time in adulthood and results in blindness. I think Stephen King has the second type.

Oh, that's rough. My husband suffers from it - he was diagnosed with a juvenile form of it (Stargardt's) in junior high, but he basically grew up with it and has learned work arounds. I can't imagine getting it at that age and having to up heave you're entire life.

OMG, I just read about the treatment. It requires injections INTO the eye. I need to go lie down.

Daniel Von Bargen, probably most known for Seinfeld and Super Troopers, attempts suicide by shooting himself in the head. He lived, but he's currently in critical condition. Poor guy.

Didn't recognize the name, but how could I not recognize the military school headmaster from Malcolm in the Middle? I hope he makes it and gets the help he needs.

How sad, I hope he recovers, physically and emotionally. He was hilarious in Super Troopers.

Alex O'loughlin goes to rehab "receive supervised treatment for pain medication." What an oddly worded press release.

It bends over backwards not to use "rehab" or 'addiction' or 'abuse,' but only manages to emphasize all of those concepts.

Huh. I wouldn't have thought he'd have a problem like that - not that I know much about him. Maybe he's been doing to many of his own stunts on Five-O.

This and some of the other blurbs reporting about Alex O'Loughlin say he'll miss filming "at least one episode", which suggests that it may not be a full 28-day rehab, or that he's going to see how it goes and it may take less time than a typical stint. It sounds like he's made the decision himself, too, so maybe this is earlier in the addiction curve than a lot of people manage? He was just voted one of the world's fittest men, so presumably he's pretty aware of what's happening with his body. Anyway, I wish him luck. Guess he won't be doing as many of his own stunts from now on.

I'm not even a fan, but poor Tila Tequila. She's recovering from a brain aneurysm after a pill overdose (which was possibly a suicide attempt). That's really sad. I hope she's alright.

Speaking of people we're not fans of but somehow feel bad for, Gallagher to be removed from medically induced coma following major heart attack.

I think Gallagher is an asshole, but that's still pretty sad. My heart goes out to his daughter.

This is not a good thing. He's had stents and still another heart attack? Misses his meds and has another heart attack? I feel like very soon the next time someone posts about him it will be in the Celebrity Death thread.

Yeah. I'll miss his bizarre, homophobic, racist, misogynistic, neo-fascistic, watermelon-smashing ass when that day comes.

His lousy act at my college netted me my one and only award for newspaper writing, so I can't hate on him too much.

Wow, she seems to have handled that very well. I can't believe she was still working when she was that sick!

I'm surprised she didn't have physical changes (weight loss/gain, probably being the most obvious). I'm glad she's okay.

I am seriously impressed not only that she kept working, but that she always seemed to have so much energy in interviews and awards show appearances. I, meanwhile, would have been milking my illness for all it was worth and insisting on taking every interview from bed.

Often times with a chronic illness, you just keep going because you think 'well, it could be worse' and probably has been. Fatigue can be real bitch though. It's hard to keep going through that.

I'm glad she's going to get some respite from all that now and has a chance of leading a healthy life.
