My natural inclination is to pronounce it as machina-ah, but I think it's supposed to be mackenah?

I saw Pitch Perfect 2 tonight.  It was completely ridiculous and nowhere near as good as the first one, but it was still a lot of fun.  Skylar Astin was such an adorable delight in part one that I was shallowly hoping he'd be in this one more than he was, but I also appreciated that this was a movie about the girls, so that's where they kept their focus.

Oh, God. Tomorrowland. I really want to tell people to see it because George Clooney and Britt Robertson are good and Raffey Cassidy is amazing and it *looks* gorgeous.

But it's also Brad Bird going Full Ayn Rand and Damon Lindelof being a goddamn hack who sucks sucks sucks suckity sucks.

So, like, San Andreas was bad. Not just mediocre. It left mediocre behind pretty early, and ended up the assbaby of Pearl Harbor and 2012 as interpreted by Lifetime. Like, SO BAD. I will give it points for having Carla Gugino as The Rock's age-appropriate love interest. Even that's almost canceled out by the fact that Alexandra Daddario is supposed to be their daughter but is clearly, like, only ten years younger than they are, and also has to deal with her boobs being treated like they need their own credit. It's seriously...do not waste your money.

Good to hear. I'd been considering it, but though that if I go to the cinema I'd rather see Mad Max again.

I was interested in it as a terribad '70s disaster homage, but then I saw Carlton Cuse's name as the writer and even though he hasn't done nearly as much in the way of destroying promising projects as Damon (infinite string of profanities) Lindelof, it was enough to kill even the mild interest I had.

And I don't even hate Lost. It's just that everything else Lindelof has done sucked so much that all I can think is that Cuse also sucks and yet somehow their combined suckage semi-inverted on itself and came out with a better-than-decent series overall. Which means that as a solo act, Cuse is also someone to avoid.

It was also super-duper lazy. One person shows up to dinner just long enough to ask Carla Gugino about her dead daughter then is immediately killed. I'm just assuming her name in the credits was Mrs. Exposition.

I will say some of the effects were pretty great. Also, I saw it at a drive-in, so my friend and I could snark on it guilt-free. We started predicting lines before they were said and were right more often than not.

It also suffered from the fact that it was a double feature with Mad Max: Fury Road. That was a movie I had no interest in after seeing the trailer at comic-con, but damn that was an amazing movie. Everything about it, from world building to characterization to storytelling. After talking all through San Andreas, we were dead silent for the whole movie except for a couple of "That was awesome"s.

I watched A Royal Night Out over the weekend and it was quite sweet. Totally predictable and it felt a little light on story in a way, but it was nice, easy fluff to watch. The actress playing Princess Elizabeth was uncannily like the real Liz, and the actress who played Princess Margaret was really funny.

I still need to go see that. I really love the first movie, although more and more it's clear to me that Originally Scripted Beca and Actual Film Beca are very different characters.

I just saw it last night and it exceeded my (admittedly low) expectations. I love the first one and thought this one would suck, but I really enjoyed it. It was not as sharp as the first one, but definitely still good.

There was definitely too much Fat Amy focus and for me, she's a character that I enjoy more in smaller doses. I always enjoy Elizabeth Banks and the other commentator guy and the singing montages make me happy. I'd probably watch a Pitch Perfect 3 if they made one.

Has anyone seen the Minions film? We were invited to a premiere kid's screening and my daughter has just turned three. She's only been to one movie (Shaun the Sheep a few months ago which she liked), but I'm wondering if there are any scary-to-a-young-kid parts to it? She's not a huge fan of robots in particular, but is there anything else generally scary to a small child in there?

I enjoyed San Andreas, of course it was predictable but it served up exactly what I wanted: disaster flick action without lengthy attempts at seriousness or emotion.

Pitch Perfect 2 was a letdown from the first one, but it held my interest.  The music was less catchy, and I hated the Treblemakers' song.

Oh my god you guys, I loved Jurassic World so much. Maybe because it's the first movie I've seen in over a year, but it was just SO MUCH FUN. Chris Pratt was terrific, he played his just-about-but-not-quite-over-the-top swaggering hero perfectly. Even though I rolled my eyes at the "work-obsessed businesswoman with no time for love or children trope," I thought Bryce Dallas Howard was actually a really good character. And the dinosaurs!! I was totally pumping my fist at the climactic scene.

It wasn't as good as the original - you can't recreate that "holy crap, look how real that T-Rex looks" and the "I've never heard of a velociraptor before but now they're in my nightmares" experience - but it was much better than the second and third movies. Even without Jeff Goldblum and Sam Neill.

Saw Mr Holmes today. It's an Ian McKellan masterclass of acting because he gets the mannerisms and deliberations of a man slowing down in old age with deteriorating memory so well and the contrast between the older Holmes and the Holmes from a few years previous is very marked. Laura Linney matches him every bit of the way; her role is less 'showy', for want of a better word, but the way she reacts to what's going on around her is very affecting. When the two of them have their relationship clarifying moment, it's very moving and well done.

It's a slow enough tale, told a lot in flashback. There's no huge Holmes moments as we might know them from the books/TV/films, but it's a great character piece and very well done. I would be disappointed if neither Laura Linney or Ian McKellan were nominated for some awards around Oscar time.

I did not have the foresight to bring tissues to Inside Out, so I had to use the napkin that had the least amount of popcorn butter on it. It was a fantastic movie.

Inside Out was fun.

Lava made me want to punch things. A beautiful sentiment married to a brilliant artistic twist on real geology... and then ruined by the most on-the-nose sappy music that was all tell and no show. I don't know. I just... I get what it was going for, but it irritated the crap out of me while I was watching it. I'd say it was possible I was just in a bad mood going in, but I don't remember feeling that way and my mood didn't affect my enjoyment of Inside Out. But, I may be the minority on this one. I genuinely think, though, that in terms of the reaction it evokes in me, it's neck-and-neck with Boundin' for the title of Worst Thing Pixar Has Ever Done (And Yes, That's Including Cars 2).

Spy! I forgive Melissa McCarthy for Tammy.

I did not know Jason Statham could be hilarious. He was one of the high points for me. "How the FUCK do I get to Italy?!?"

But the best scenes were Rose Byrne and Melissa McCarthy bagging on each other. How did they not have outtakes from that over the credits? I lost it at "You look like a slutty dolphin trainer."

Spy is freakin' HILARIOUS!!! It was my birthday movie when we were in Braintree and it was a brilliant life choice on my part. (Aside: did you know that the screens in the AMC Braintree have leather reclining seats? Because OH MY GOD! My mother and I didn't know ourselves and now when I go to my cinema here at home, I feel sad that it is just the regular seating). ANYWAY, I laughed so much during Spy I snorted a few times.

I love the bit where Melissa McCarthy makes Rose Byrne's bodyguard cry.

Also, it's a very girl friendly movie in the sense that the ladies are all quite supportive of one another and the friendships are taken seriously.

It is a definite 'must-purchase' when it comes out on DVD.
