American Idol Empty American Idol

Post  MichiSichi Sun Jan 29, 2012 7:07 am

I searched twice for a topic on this!
I am really just looking at the auditions and Hollywood (and even have FF during most of the auditions).
1) still not the same without Simon (even if Steven is hilarious)
2) Love looking at Jennifer in all her divaness and jealousy of other younger women
3) After the Big Bang Theory beat them in ratings - I do believe this will be the last season

highlight this year = Magic Cyclops!

Anyone else watching this year? The top 12 13 guys performed last night and the top 12 girls are tonight. And, I don't get why they do this, but they are immediately eliminating half of them to make a top 12. Or 13 or something. I wish they'd give people a little longer to make an impression. And, a lot of them really needed it. I thought the majority of them sounded terrible and were off pitch most of the time. I love Joshua Ledet, and find Heejun delightful, and other than that I really couldn't care less. Maybe I'll feel differently with the girls, but I wasn't excited about any of them in the audition rounds, so we'll see.

The judges REALLY REALLY need to figure out how to give feedback. They literally did not give a single person a negative comment last night.

Also, Ryan Seacrest was so tan that I literally thought my TV was broken for a minute.

The judging is simply terrible this season. Not that it was any better last season. They seriously need a Simon-type, someone who is willing to call out the karaoke singing, cruise ship performing, and bad Broadway auditioning that I saw last night. Instead, we got a flock of Paulas.

Oh, I will be watching this until the bitter end.

I agree on the needing to actually critique the singers. Eban Whateverokwitz and his Adele song? I thought it was horrible. The guys were a bit boring. Joshua Ledat was good, but still pretty boring. I do wish they would go back to booting off two per round until they have a top 12 like they used to.

And Heejun is a delight.

I'll agree about Heejun. He's the most consistently entertaining part of this season. I even lost it a bit as he lip-synced "This...is American Idol" behind Ryan during the introduction last night.

I ALSO love Heejun.

I am guessing the show is being super sensitive to everyone saying The Voice is better because it has better talent, so they worked overtime to make it seem like EVERYONE. IS. AWESOME. But the problem with Idol is that the house band always ends up sounding cheesy, the arrangements are never that good, and yeah, they get no coaching that makes sense because the judges are basically there to convince the TV audience that the talent level isn't subpar.

That said, there ARE some great voices. I hated Reid's jazz version of Maroon 5, though. HATED IT. Especially to open the show. It had zero energy, and it took a song whose primary characteristic is that it gets people to hip-shimmy along with it whether they want to or not, and turned it into a snore.

I did love the dude they brought in at the end, but mostly because he's adorable and for how teeny he made Ryan look. Aaron, Adam (Gokey Jr, to me), Joshua, Jermaine, and Colton are the ones who I think did the best? Country boy Chase was blah, and I DO NOT GET why they love Philip Phillips, except that maybe the name makes them laugh. I also didn't like DeAndre, even though they went nuts for him; I thought his breathy notes were off. Oh, and Heejun -- I thought he did well. My suspicion is that J.Lo will put one of the boys through with her wild card spot, and that it will be Heejun or DeAndre, if they don't get there on their own.

The first thing I thought of when I heard that song was that they have been playing it over commercials for The Voice (right? unless it was the other singing show). I was wondering if they put it first for that reason. I didn't think his version did anyone any favors in that regard though.

Hee, when he got eliminated last week and he was standing there hugging his mom, and Ryan was standing off to the side, I got the giggles like crazy because it was like some LOTR forced-perspective shot, with Ryan as the hobbit. I took a picture of the TV to commemorate it.

I just started tonight's episode, and man, there are a lot of blonde chicks.

Y'know, I've never rooted for a country performer on this show, but I found myself enjoying Skylar Laine much more than anyone else last night. The rest seemed a bit bland and forgettable in comparison.

EDIT: Wait, forgot that Jessica Lopez was pretty damned spectacular. And she's from my hometown!

Me too. I had basically no opinion of her throughout the audition shows (except that I'm distracted by how much she looks like Rachel Dratch), I couldn't care less about country music, and when she was coming up I was like "Yawn." But then...I kind of thought she was awesome. In addition to BEING ON KEY and other things that I consider to be basic requirements of singing, she was just really energetic and fun to watch. I'm rooting for her now too.

While boggling over the number of blondes in the lineup, I was thinking a little more about the demographics, and it really is kinda crazy: 12 girls. All with long straightish hair. 6 blondes (Hollie, Haley, Hallie, Tall Girl, Erica, Elise). Of the remaining 6, 5 white brunettes (Skylar, Girl Who Went First And Sucked, Baylie, Brielle, Jen) and 1 non-white brunette (Jessica). It's not that I necessarily want them to throw in a bunch of bad singers just to get a better ethnic mix, but damn. (Also, as someone who has trouble telling faces apart, between this and the Hollie/Hallie/Haley/Baylie situation, it's probably good we're about to eliminate a bunch of them.)

It was clear the judges were fussed at for their zero criticisms of the boys, since they were way more critical of the girls, which in a way is too bad because overall I thought the girls were better. As long as Joshua and Heejun stick around though I will forgive.

I thought most of the girls were terrible. The boys were boring, but at least they were in tune. The only standouts for me were Skyler, Erika, Elise and Jessica. Loved Skyler's energy and her song choice. Erika sounded great and didnt over sing. Elise sounded raw and heartfelt on that Adele song. Jessica was a huge surprise! She sounded amazing, but I worry about her voice. Hope she takes care of herself because it can't be a good sign to have vocal chord issues so early.

And they could pick any song they wanted and two girls choose the same song? Really? The Adele songs need to stop.

Oh good, I'm glad I wasn't the only one who thought she was much better than the rest. I liked Hollie, too, actually.

I thought most of the girls sounded terrible -- too low in some of their songs, off-key in others. The one who sang "Sweet Dreams" was kind of a mess. I like Hallie Day, but I am not sure she picked the best song. And the little blonde Kristen Stewart lookalike has a great voice, but I don't think that song or that dress was the best fit for her either.

I always feel like the fact that it's a live show is a problem. The judges need to see it live, then see how it played to America on TV, and THEN give critique. Because the truth is going to be somewhere in the middle.

I'm willing to lay money on the prediction that Skylar kicks hell out of a Melissa Etheridge song before the season is over. It seems an obvious choice.

Well, if she did Melissa Etheridge well, that would be a first for this show. (Hasn't "Come to My Window" done in a number of people over the years?)

I'm pretty happy with how the top 13 ended up. Jimmy Iovine's comments were spot on, I think. He really needs to be a judge.

I am too! And with the exception of my love for Heejun, I agreed with every single thing he said. I was wondering if they threw him in there with his comments to make up for the stupidness of the judging on Tuesday. It was downright refreshing to hear someone speak so frankly. I often felt Simon was mean on purpose for the dramz, but Iovine seemed to just be saying what he thought. I also wish he were a judge.

I felt bad for Baylie (who is ALSO blonde!! Bringing it to 7 out of 12 girls. She must have had brown hair at one point and the blonde didn't register with me) when Ryan asked what she'd do differently and she was like "Probably sing on key." She knew she was a goner, all right. It must be such a crappy feeling to have been on American Idol with one shot, and watching yourself back and being like "Holy crap I sound awful."

Quite awkward at the end there when the last 3 not to make it were sort of lingering on the stage and Ryan was like, "You may go!" And they sort of shuffled out of the way so the top 13 could be brought down to freak out and celebrate where they had just been standing.

I think this is going to be a good top 13. I still don't see what's so great about Jeremy, and I hope he pulls it together a little, because I don't want to watch him and JLo crying at each other every week.

I'm glad Hee Jun and Phillip Phillips made it through. Hee Jun cracks me up, and even though his voice is untrained compared to the others, I like the sound & tone of it. I'm not really a fan of Phillip's style, but I like his personality and he reminds me of someone I know, so yeah, I have totally ridiculous criteria.

I'm glad Grimm didn't make it because he freaks me out. Even when he's not making those faces, he has a slight Tom Cruisey-ness in his features, which is a complete turn off for me.

Love Phillip Phillips, though I'm afraid the theme weeks and general product-whoring this show requires will eat him alive. Stay strong, Phil!

Am blown away by tiny Jessica Sanchez. Holy crap can that girl sing. I just wish her intro package was better--she's all: I love to shop! And go to malls and shop! And buy things! But she's 16, right? So she gets a pass.

Hollie Cavanaugh (sp?) is great, too. I hope her song choices improve, though. So over that stupid Reflection song from some animated flick of 10 years ago. But it's the only XTina song they have a release for, I think, so there you go.

Heejun makes me laugh, but I fear his voice is too flimsy to keep him around for very long. I adore his bromance with Phillip, too.

Jesus, Jessica really blew that out of the water last night, didn't she? And, yes, it was largely an impersonation of the original, but any other sort of rendition would have caused immense blowback from the judges, so the best thing that she could do was make sure that the impersonation was flawless. She succeeded.

Points to Skylar Laine and Phillip Phillips for managing to rearrange their song choices into formats that they were comfortable with. Half a point to Heejun for a mildly amusing bit with the coaches making up for an okay-but-not-fantastic performance. Everybody else kind of blends together into a grey lump of oversinging mediocrity for now.

I like Jessica. I really do. I think she's a fantastic singer. BUT, it felt a little over-the-top to me that she both went last (of the girls) and was given "I Will Always Love You." Yes, she's one of the few who could pull it off, I guess. But there was never a doubt in my mind that she'd do that song. It was a little manufactured. Especially because I felt bad for Elise, who got saddled with a song she didn't know. She just looked so pissed. So it's like, "Here, blonde lady, you do this song." "What? OK." "PRECIOUS TALENTED TEENAGE PRODIGY, WE HAVE SAVED THE MOST SPECIAL SONG FOR YOU." I think TWoPpers are crazy with the "TCO" stuff all the time, but it sure did feel like Jessica was being FEATURED.

She did do a good job with it, for sure. Shannon probably had the second showboatiest Whitney song and she totally whiffed it. And you're right, Jessica couldn't have changed it up too much without running into disapproval. I guess AI is always like this so I don't know what I'm talking about.

I also found myself wishing they had switched the boys and girls. I'm sure it would blow Randy's mind but I don't think it would be thaaaaaaat crazy to have a female sing a Stevie Wonder song or a guy sing a Whitney song. I love Whitney, but my god those songs are tired. Maybe they felt it wouldn't have been a respectful enough "tribute."

I loved Skylar and Phillip last night and Jessica was like whoa...amazing. I'm very tired of that song at the moment, though.

Mary J. Blige was a superb mentor. Seriously, her advice was almost always spot-on and she seemed genuinely interested in helping them. Love that.

So apparently JLo was the only one who liked Jeremy.

And what the hell is up with the goodbye song? The Tim McGraw version is lovely, but I do not want a whole season of Scotty McCreepy singing that crap. Do. Not. Want.

Nope, Scotty won and has been a success (coming after a couple of winners who...underperformed), so they are going to remind the audience of it constantly. Especially now that The Voice is doing so well, the whole producing actual music stars thing is one of Idol's few trump cards left. He's coming up on a million in album sales in a few weeks so they'll have him back on to sing, present him with his platinum record plaque and mention once or twenty times how "only American Idol" can make someone happen that way.

Next week is Songs From The Year They Were Born, so it's going to be mostly a 90s Night with a few 80s songs sprinkled in.
