Ben and Kate
After only two episodes this is pretty much my favorite new show. Tommy's crush on Kate makes me laugh and laugh. "His sister is beautiful and I am in love with her."
"Gee-off" hee that's always how I want to say it when it's spelled that way. We're not married, we're brother and sister, just two co-parenting siblings.
Since I like it, it will surely die a ratings death.

I totally agree--this is definitely my favorite new show. I knew I'd love Nat Faxon, but Dakota Johnson has really surprised me. She is hilarious. I loved her weird whispering of her "home address" to the school board members, and her devastated "NO!" in the flashback when she was told she couldn't use double coupons.
The whole ensemble is really great, and they just work together. Their frantic invasion of Tommy's parents' house was amazing. Love that it was obviously something everyone had been prepared for. Also, I hope Lucy Punch gets to deliver some kind of inappropriate lecture to Maddie every week.
"...and that's how I came to spend a semester at Howard University."

I like it too. Ben & Kate, New Girl & The Mindy Project makes for a good lineup.

Yeah, Tuesday nights on Fox are pretty excellent - we watch the full two hours, and Ben and Kate is definitely the standout of the new season. Both my husband and I LOVE it.

I love that Cameron from Ferris Bueller was the principal.

Dakota Johnson is actually pretty great, good for her.

I've been laughing all day at "No, she said her babysitter is a brother" or whatever the exact line was.

Yeah I had no idea who she was when I first saw the pilot so I had no preconceived notions about her and thought she was a delight. Three generations of the family on Fox on Tuesday!

I find this show totally charming, also, and she's great on it. Good for her!

Me too. Everything he said "Gee-off," I laughed. I might have a weird crush on Nat Faxon.

Re: Ben and Kate
I afraid I disagree about Dakota Johnson; I just don't think she's that great here. Occasionally she's funny but mostly I find her very wooden. Then again, I also have an irrational dislike of her because I'm old enough to remember when she was born and her parents were still married to each other and now I just feel old. I guess that's not really her fault.
Otherwise, I am really enjoying the show and yes, there definitely needs to be a scene with BJ and Maddie every week because Lucy Punch is hilarious.
The scene with Tommy's parents right before the party made me laugh: "This isn't chicken Marsala." "Why would I lie about what I made for dinner?"

I think she grounds the show, myself. She has a calmer vibe then a lot of the other charaters/actors and I think you need that. I love Lucy Punch and BJ, but I can see that being a character if over relied on, that could become stale.

Yay! I was totally sweating it because the ratings were not too hot, but I thought they might be patient and realize they have a nice little block of critically praised sitcoms and stick with it.

I think the character grounds the show, definitely. I'm just not sold on Dakota Johnson's acting. I agree that BJ could easily become tired if used too much but so far she's killed me in every scene she's been in.
I'm really glad the show got picked up.

I think my favorite detail is that kid Ben wears braces...'cause Nat Faxon...not so much with the good teeth. Love it.

I actually quite like Dakota Johnson on it -- she comes off very natural. She was a recast for Abby Elliott, and I think... that would not have worked at all. DJ has a nice gentle vibe about her with a touch of "adorably hapless" in there.

I feel the same way. I think they also aged down the character a bit with Dakota Johnson and it works. She seems both very mature but also at times in over her head.

I had no idea that Abby Elliott was cast first. In that case, Dakota Johnson was a good call.

Re: Ben and Kate
This week's episode balanced hilarity and sincerity so well that I honestly think it's my favorite episode of any show this season, new or returning. I am so not used to sitcoms firing on all cylinders right out the gate, but this show is really pulling it off.
BJ's loooong monologue in defense of Ben was so weird and amazing, it just boggles my mind that the writers can be so self-assured about what they're doing just four episodes in. And Lucy Punch is killing it. The whole ensemble is, really. Gah, alright I'll stop gushing.
But first:
"Go on, spell mermaid right now and we'll all get on board."
"M...U..."
"Aaand moving on."

Re: Ben and Kate
Lucy Punch/Rob Corddry made may life in the last episode. "I'm surprised you have eyebrows." "I have them ALL over the place." Warrant pushed it right over the top.
I agree, not that it won't still get better, and improve, but I feel like it knew what it was out of the gate and has really nailed it every episode since, tone and cast wise it gelled immediately. Well once they found Dakota Johnson obvs.
Oh and I loved Tommy last night too, "like orange juice and peppemints" that really does sound bad.

Re: Ben and Kate
I love when Rob Corddry called BJ an Australian, and BJ switched right over to an Australian accent. I like all of the main 4 characters, and the interdynamics. I like Louise - does that actress always play the crazy ex-girlfriend? One small thing that bothers me is that Ben looks more than 10 years older than Kate, when they're only supposed to be a couple years apart.

Re: Ben and Kate
Yeah I think Dakota Johnson is supposed to be playing more like 24-26 and she looks more like 21, while Nate Faxon looks closer to 40 than 30. I was SO confused in that episode when they were 'recreating' her never had 21st birthday, because I thought it really was her 21st birthday.
Re: Ben and Kate
So last nights show was the funniest episode of television not named Community I've seen in three years. So fucking funny, and super sweet too.
So much goodness, Babe Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Special Candy from Amsterdam, HOT HOT Josh Kelly,
Auntie BJ's special candy from Amsterdam, and a ton of quotable jokes.
"I was the night watchmen at a doll factory, Kate. Nothing scares me.
"Are all of these yours? You've given birth SO many times."
Pre Moms
"I can't remember why I took these? Was it to paint you? "
"Your body is a wonder ball, a water bra. No your body is a *waterfall*!"
And of course my favorite:
"It is sad when a heterosexual man can't ride his sister's bike from the farmers market while holding a seasonal gourd without attracting comments."
I loved all of Maddie's past costumes, and Dakota Johnson is just doing such a great job with Kate, anxious but goofy and hilarious all at once. Like when she recreated what "getting action" looks/sounds like. Ha!
Good for the show for point out that when we're young we have to princesses and when we're old we have to be sluts. Loved the show calling that crap out, on *multiple* levels. Good for them for pointing out Full Size is Fun Size. Hee.

When Kate started singing the alphabet to the hot neighbor, I died. Of embarrassment and hilarity.
