Re: Advice Columns
I'm sort of wondering if that woman has some developmental challenges, because, I mean, REALLY?
The "It’s coffee, not sex pollen." comment made me laugh, though.

Re: Advice Columns
There was some talk in the comments that that writer replaced pot with coffee. But: a) what for? and b) no matter what Reefer Madness told us, pot doesn't do that either.

One of the more frightening letters I've seen at the Ask A Manager advice blog.

Eek. I'm with most of the commenters on that one; if I was her manager and I got that e-mail, I'd be wondering if I could contact a domestic violence agency or the police.Jamie wrote:One of the more frightening letters I've seen at the Ask A Manager advice blog.

Oh wow, that was something else. The way she totally tried to justify his email while acknowledging that she didn't want him to send it was a big red flag.

Good lord. Best case scenario on that one, that dude is seriously socially tone-deaf and she is in some serious denial about how that comes off to regular people.
Trick-or-treating shall take place exactly as dictated by my dinner plans
Seriously, these days with all you hear about helicopter parenting hysteria I'm surprised people let their kids go out *after* dark.

Re: Advice Columns
She answered the door so what damage would there be to give them candy, they have already been "interrupted". Just don't answer the door or put some candy out for the time it takes you to eat dinner. Or at the very least if you are going to be so rigid, take it one step further and post a note on the door about the times you are going to be giving out candy, people aren't psychic.

"Children knocked on my door on Halloween asking for candy" is that lady's problem. It's Halloween. 5pm (aka the time by which most/some parents are home from work) is fair game.

I hate to be on rigid lady's side, but there's always been a set time for trick or treating where I live so if someone showed up early, I'd be a little surprised too. I'd just give them the candy and let it go, but I would be caught slightly off-guard.
Is unusual to have a timeframe for trick or treating? Our town always does it the Friday closest to Halloween from 6-8, do other towns just have a random schedule on the actual Halloween date?

Ours was always just whenever people showed up on Halloween - I think it was pretty constant from 5pm to, I don't know, 8pm or 9pm.mayram wrote:I hate to be on rigid lady's side, but there's always been a set time for trick or treating where I live so if someone showed up early, I'd be a little surprised too. Re: Advice Columns
Same here. They started coming when they started coming, and I'd say 5 was probably when you could start expecting them. Then when you're done you turn your porchlight off. Porchlight off = closed for trick-or-treating business.
But yeah, I know there are towns that dictate the time or even the date.

We've always had kids coming anywhere after 5-9pm. I think that some families take their kids so early is because they're younger and either want to get them to bed at a decent hour or have other family/kid halloween events to go to.

Re: Advice Columns
The only time it's not on Halloween here in Salt Lake is if it falls on Sunday. Most people go Saturday instead, but some people go on Sunday too. And I'm sure some older kids take advantage and go both days. :)
I wish Halloween was always on a Friday. I think the set times are a bit rigid, but I always feel bad for parents ( and teachers) who have to deal with Halloween on a school night.

It's always been 6-8pm on Halloween, no matter where I've lived. Growing up in Catholic school, it didn't matter what day Halloween was on because we always had Nov. 1st off for All Saint's Day. (Having to go to church was a small price to pay for staying up late overdosing on sugar.)

Re: Advice Columns
Around here, each township announces the day and time for Halloween Trick or Treating, and people tend to follow it, within half an hour. This year, it's on Halloween from 6:30 to 8:00.
This year, the school my son goes to has scheduled a big Teacher's In-service for the 31st and 1st, so there's no school those days. I think that's brilliant.

I do think 5 o'clock is a bit early if it's on a weekday, if for no other reason than most people get out of work then, or are just walking in the door. But she had the the candy and answered the door, so she should have sucked it up and given it to the kids and not been a Scrooge.
And we have always lived-and-died by the porch light on Halloween.

Exactly -- if she was that miffed by it, she could have just not answered the door. I suppose the worry is you get your house egged or something, but the little tiny kids that trick-or-treat at 5, probably not.

The idea of Trick or Treating other days is so odd to me - we've never done trick or treating any day but on Halloween, and the same for any friends houses I went to growing up.

Her phrasing of being "bombarded with requests for candy" was so over the top. 3 kids is hardly a siege, lady. And yeah, you're already up answering the door, just give out the damn candy.
We always use the porch light rule too, though there were always one or two houses (usually old people) who had just completely forgotten it was Halloween and had the porch lights on but no candy.

Yeah, same here. Aside from a few stragglers who come after 8, people tend to stick to the timeframe. I've never had anyone show up early, it usually takes about a half hour before we get a steady stream of people, which always throws off my candy supply. I start handing out big fistfuls of candy thinking that there won't be that many kids and then I'm scrambling at the end.

Re: Advice Columns
Around Hallowe'en it starts to get dark from about five here, so we'd go out at about half four and be finished by seven at the absolute latest since the loot had usually all been distributed by then and it was pretty cold at that point anyway. An hour or so earlier than normal would be unusual, but I would assume the parents wanted their children in early for whatever reason. You'd wonder why people get het up enough about these things to write an advice column.

So you know how General Patreus just had to resign because of an affair? Back in July his girlfriend's husband wrote in to the Ethicist! He's LW2, he must be.

Re: Advice Columns
I halfway suspect you’re writing this letter because you want specific people to read this column and deduce who is involved and what’s really going on behind closed doors (without actually addressing the conflict in person). That’s not ethical, either.
Yeah, I think that the Ethicist hit the nail on the head, right there.
