I'm really curious to see how they do Hound, given that a dog dipped in phosphorus may be a bit to scooby doo.
Every Scooby-doo episode is a riff on Hound of the Baskervilles.
Re: Sherlock
So if they riff on Scooby Doo we have hit the ouroboros of mysteries? JINKIES JOHN!

It was such a throwaway moment but the thing that got the biggest laugh from me was Sherlock saying, "Laterz" to Mycroft as he left Buckingham Palace. It was just so sarcastic.
His way of calling the police was also pretty funny.

When Mrs. Hudson produced the cell phone from her bra and said she snuck it out, that made me love her madly. That's a badass right there.
Also the shrug conversation in Buckingham Palace cracked me up.

Re: Sherlock
I loved that bit too, cutebutpsycho. Suddenly she went from this sort of in-the-wings character to this 'holy crap she's awesome!' badass. That and her comments to John later when he was trying to get her to the hospital, I think? And she was all, 'Bah, away with your foolish talk, young man!'. As another comment elsewhere noted, she did have Sherlock make sure her husband was being put down for murder, so she's got steel in her for sure.

Does anyone know when the new episodes will be made available on Netflix? I don't know where to see the show before it is uploaded there.

Ah yes, that was one of my favorite parts! I love how protective both of them are regarding Mrs. Hudson.
Chibimanda, I'm guessing that the new episodes will be available on iTunes before they get to Netflix. I have no idea when that will be, though.

Re: Sherlock
The episodes are going to air on PBS in May, so they'll be available on iTunes then. They'll probably not be available on instant watch until a few months after the US DVDs become available (which will likely be autumn if they follow the same marketing pattern that they did for the first season).

I remember buying all three season one episodes on Amazon's video-on-demand service a few months before they were on Masterpiece, so keep an eye on them and iTunes over the next few weeks.

Not a huge fan of the "flying to the rescue" thing at the end, but I'm willing to overlook that due to the general excellence of the rest of the program. This is as enjoyable a series as I've seen since...well, since Doctor Who was rebooted.

Nitpicking, I know, but we've had children killed on New Years due to guns being fired into the air, so that's what leaped to mind when he did that.

Re: Sherlock
Release the H.O.U.N.D.!
Well, they certainly put some effort into updating the story, I'll give them that. I also thought it was hilarious that it was Russell Tovey as the man who believes he's being chased by a murderous hound, given his own werewolf-y past, heh.
Loved Sherlock's "I'll tell you next week's lottery numbers" - his over-the-top sneaky expression made me laugh. Also John calling him "Spock". Also, also - Sherlock's purple shirt. Goodness, but Mr. Cumberbatch certainly can work a purple.
MIND PALACE.
I couldn't believe, though, that John, as a medical doctor and knowing the sorts of things going on in that facility, would just blithely and nonchalantly stroll about and poke around an experimental lab without seemingly worrying about donning a few layers of protective gear. It's not like he didn't see staff with masks and coveralls on the first time he was there. When he went through the door with the sign about 'don't come in here if you want a cold!' I was all, "WHAT ARE YOU DOING, YOU IDIOT' at the computer. Dude!!
SUPER SECRET CIA EXPERIMENT TEAM SHIRTS, WHAT?
And the very end bit - suddenly Moriarty is in some sort of cell/facility being observed by Mycroft? And then released? Mycroft, Mycroft - what are you playing at?

I try not to let it ruin everything else, but I hate sloppy gunwork, especially from the good guys - even something as simple as someone keeping a finger on the trigger without the intent to fire (it should be on the trigger guard, not the trigger, until you actually want to fire) but especially stuff like blind firing into the air just aggravates me. I give leeway for characters that aren't supposed to be familiar with guns or bad guys, but Sherlock should have known better.

What? Whenever I'm involved with any top secret government research programme, the very first thing we do is work out the design of the t-shirt.sagitare wrote:SUPER SECRET CIA EXPERIMENT TEAM SHIRTS, WHAT?
I enjoyed this one, but I really missed the London scenery porn that is so much a part of the previous episodes, and I didn't feel that the innumerable shots of Sherlock posing on a tor, billowing coat and all, quite made up for it. I was surprised that John wasn't slightly more au fait with what was going on in the facility, given his medical background, and I winced a bit at his super-unsubtle questioning - come on, with a flatmate like Sherlock surely you can do better than that! But how good was Martin Freeman in the scene in the lab with the "hound"? He does such good work in this programme; it's a shame that he often seems to be overshadowed by Cumberbatch as far as reviewers are concerned.
Did we ever find out why Lestrade ("Why did you call him Greg?" "Because that's his name!") was hanging around - did Mycroft put him up to it?

Yes, yes! I thought he was great in that bit, too. He is definitely underrated on the show.allochthonous wrote:But how good was Martin Freeman in the scene in the lab with the "hound"? That's as good a theory as any at this point, especially given the ending. We know Mycroft has his fingers in a lot of pies, so deploying Lestrade could certainly be part of whatever game he's playing.Did we ever find out why Lestrade ("Why did you call him Greg?" Re: Sherlock
Martin Freeman's reactions to Sherlock's statements and suggestions are legend. They add so much to the story and to the character because he never overdoes it and how the man manages to vary his frowns and wide eyes and never make it seem like a tired old response to the viewer is a true testament to his skills. I also like the way Watson always walks with a military bearing of straight back and shoulders back. It's a small detail but it's those things that make the show enjoyable because if they weren't getting the characters right, nobody would bother watching.

Re: Sherlock
Agreed, QueenSix. I how much he can convey with so little in the sense that his expression or body will change ever so slightly but yet he clearly gets across the emotion. You clearly see (and feel) when he's pissed at Sherlock versus when he's confused at what Sherlock is saying, even though there isn't a lot of difference on his face between the two emotions. Some actors will be much more obvious when they're being upset or angry. Martin doesn't have to do that.
Speaking of emotions, I really liked how we got this real look into the mind of Sherlock and how much of a prison it can be for him. In the scenes at the inn after Sherlock sees the hound, when he's basically having his breakdown as he's sitting in front of the fire next to John, the way he's so manically describing the backstories of the mother and son behind him from what he's deducing about their appearance showed the dark side of his abilities. I felt bad for him because you see that he can't help himself in seeing all this minutae and connecting it together, and that this goes on inside his head at every moment of every day. I thought BC was wonderful in showing the agony of what happens when Sherlock can't keep on top of his own mind and emotions.
ETA: trailer for next week's episode

I think I died laughing at the harpoon. That was such a nice nod to canon.
And Gatiss is a marvel. This was just magnificent in pace, plot and the emotional beats. I could kiss him.
Seriously though, when I do a top secret CIA project, the first question that happens at the meetings is: What will the T-shirts look like?

I would like to recommend for general edification this clip of Martin Freeman on The Graham Norton Show, particularly his reaction to the accusation that he doesn't say very much as Watson (at about 1:05 - NSFW).

Re: Sherlock
People, stop this scoffing over t-shirts! We get commemorative t-shirts for special girl guide occasions, I don't see why the CIA wouldn't do the same to promote a sense of team and "we're all in this together" type thing. There isn't much difference between the CIA and Girl Guiding either. Both have considerable paperwork and visit other countries. Fact.
That preview gave me chills! It's going to be exciting! Squee, etc.
ETA: That's a brilliant response from Martin Freeman. Hee. I must watch more of it on YouTube, it looks like a fun interview.

Martin Freeman sitting next to Karen Gillan. Moffat-worlds collide!
No, seriously, he and BC so need to step over to "Who" for a little bit.
I liked "Hounds" as a stand-alone story, but wasn't particularly thrilled with the way it was placed in the larger story. I thought the random flash of Moriarty during the drug induced panic was a bit much and the ending beats out "Scandal"s for sheer "what the fuck"ery. I'm sure will get plenty of context for it next week, but on its own that scene did absolutely nothing for me, and with all the "Sherlock" scribbles kind of pissed me off for playing up Moriarty as some kind of obsessed psychotic - he's psychopathic, but not psychotic. Again - that will probably be explained as part of his latest brilliant scheme next week, but it was worthless as a fake "cliffhanger".

I think I lost it around "I've got a laptop" when he was asked about the attention. From what I've seen, his wife (or partner? I'm not sure) has been trolling around and showing him the Facebook page "Martin Freeman is made up of Jam, Kittens and Rage."

Re: Sherlock
Because I'm a geek, I paused the Reichenbach Falls preview on the newspaper mock-ups. This is especially interesting. Basically, I'm just looking for something, anything, that isn't spoilery but is enough to give me a fix until Sunday. By the time it airs, I'll be a bundle of nerves because the original story does not end well and as series 3 has not yet been confirmed, I am suspecting the worst! *flails just because*
Crown Jewel Thief is to be tried at the Old Bailey and Sherlock Holmes is named as a witness for the prosecution. Master criminal Moriarty taunted Holmes with his graffitied GET SHERLOCK at the scene of the crime. The crime is attracting huge attention internationally too.
Irish born Moriarty - of no fixed abode, seems to be taunting the master detective.
Boffin Holmes, accompanied by confirmed bachelor John Watson- refused to comment.
