Re: The Star Wars Saga
I haven't been this excited about Star Wars since 1994. I look forward to all types of crazy rumors and speculation on the net.
Re: The Star Wars Saga
I was flipping through channels at my parents' house over Thanksgiving (they have The Cable), and R2-D2 and C3PO were appearing on some god-awful Disney Channel tween show. I was so disgraced I had to change the channel. This is where my worry lies for the franchise under Disney's control.

I didn't know where else to put this but I laughed and laughed when I saw the typo and wanted to share.

Ha! I'm pretty sure someone's written a fanfic with that title starring Anakin, Padme, and Ghost Obi-Wan.

Looks like J.J. Abrams is in the director's chair for the Star Wars sequel.

It's not confirmed yet (nothing on StarWars.com,) but it looks pretty likely. (Self link, don't mind me.) NYT, Variety, THR, EW all seem to have independent confirmation. Key word: Seem.

I won't believe anything until Lucasfilm or Disney announce it. Hell, Wookieepedia had Matthew Vaughn listed as director a couple of weeks ago.

Re: The Star Wars Saga
Yeah. No one's quoting anyone from Lucasfilm or Bad Robot on this. "Sources" in this case are whoever posted the original article and then everyone who's picked it up from there without independent confirmation. Could it be true? Sure. JJ said he didn't want to do it, but the man is a known liar - or at least a known troller (see: the Khan/Harrison kerfluffle) - when it comes to keeping secrets.
So until a press release comes out from someone - and preferably Lucasfilm, though I'd grudgingly accept one from Bad Robot - it hasn't happened.

Both Trek and Wars? Don't get star-greedy, dude.
(Meh, I guess he'll be okay, if it's actually true. But how many franchises do you need? And isn't he someone who might like room in his schedule to do his own film?)

Re: The Star Wars Saga
I'm kind of torn about this. On the one hand I loved what he did with the Star Trek reboot. He walked perfectly the line between modern, contemporary update and still keeping the spirit of the original intact. On the other, I think it's kind of weird that he's doing both Star Trek and Star Wars. It's like he covets Whedon's 'King of the Geeks' crown and will stop at nothing to get it.

Re: The Star Wars Saga
Maybe it's all part of Disney's master plan. You know eventually they'll own the Star Trek franchise, and this way it will be easier to just blend the two.....

I want to object, but a Star Wars/Star Trek crossover would be SO FLIPPIN' COOL.

Re: The Star Wars Saga
He did a great job with Star Trek, but I also kind of feel that putting both franchises in the same hands is kind of weird. I also feel sorry for the wrath he will get because he cannot possibly make everybody happy.
I think I would be more excited if the god awful prequels didn't exist.

They should remake the prequels. And I like the prequels . . . but they could have been so much better.

Re: The Star Wars Saga
I was hoping Ben Affleck would get it. I'm not into his films beyond casual enjoyment but he's obviously a massive fan and has a classical style similar to Lucas' invoking of Ford and Kurosawa and Eisenstein that would meld really well with the previous trilogies. I kind of hated how JJ tried to do early Spielberg in Super 8, but hey, he's still a good choice considering names like Matthew Vaughn. The real key to these films is casting and chemistry. And with this in mind, it is a great thing that Ben wasn't cast. You just know he would have cast himself as one of Han Solo's sons.

Re: The Star Wars Saga
I actually think Matthew Vaughn would have been great. I've enjoyed everything of his except for Stardust. He really brings a lot of heart to his projects, and great casting too. He gave us the new James Bond, for one thing. Maybe he'll get to do VIII.

I wonder what kind lens flares light sabers make. I'm going to have to put on sunglasses for the fight scenes.

Funnily, Stardust is the only Matthew Vaughn film I like!
I have a terrible feeling that Benedict Cumberbatch will be cast in this trilogy. I can feel it in my bones. His ego will go through the roof.

I have an insane amount of affection for Stardust and I think Matthew Vaughn would have done a fantastic job. JJ Abrams just seems like such a safe choice.

Re: The Star Wars Saga
I wonder if JJ will resume his tradition of Greg Weiss cameos.
I admit I'm a little afraid for what this means for Michael Arndt. I have no idea what his screenplay looks like, if it's any good, or what. But I think it would suck to land a gig writing the first non-George Lucas Star Wars movie in 29 years and then have Damon Lindelof or Bob Orci and Alex Kurtzman come in and totally rewrite it for JJ.
I think, after the atrocity of Prometheus, if Lindelof's name were mentioned anywhere in connection with a rewrite, that might be it for me on seeing this movie in theaters. And I say that as someone who ranges from tolerates to likes on the prequels. I hated Prometheus just that much.

I haven't seen Prometheus, but I've read enough negative articles. But really, about the only thing that could keep me away was if it was in smellovision and all about the Hutts. Even then, I'd think twice about not seeing it... When you're an addict, and all.

Re: The Star Wars Saga
Arndt is a Disney favourite and Kathleen Kennedy is a rare, great producer and wields far more power than Rick McCallum did and more than any hired director on this project will have, so we can only hope and pray that she keeps the JJ's hackier associates far, far away. The prequels showed that they can hire all the prestige actors they want and it will mean little if there is no chemistry. Hopefully she can keep the goofball casting to a minimum as well. And I include Greg Grunberg and Abrams family friend Ben Affleck in that category.
