Re: Star Trek Movies
The exhaustive, detailed analysis going on over on Tumblr comparing Cumberbatch's and Pine's fingers and thumbs to *the* hand at the end of the Japanese trailer is pretty funny. Who knew you could get so much mileage out of debating who has the wonkiest pinky finger?
Not that I'm in much of a position to poke fun, because I totally read it all.

So who is this dude that he's supposed to be playing? The King Tribble?

Re: Star Trek Movies
Of course, they're also being cagey about who Peter Weller is playing.
The thing is, Peter Weller has played a character in Trek before. In fact, a character whose continuity is not wiped out, since he was on Enterprise.
Is it possible Weller is playing
Of course, this is advanced Trek Nerdity. Perhaps too much for the average audience.

- Paxton again, with an anti-alien plot of some sort? And thus Cumberbatch is part of Terra Prime? Or is Col. Green?

Re: Star Trek Movies
I didn't even realize Peter Weller was even in this. And while I wasn't a fan of "Terra Prime" and the Trip/T'Pol baby-angst, I would think it absolutely marvelous if the "Earth First" movement was referenced here. Even if it's just a throw-away line like the reference to Admiral Archer's beagle.
Examples for why crowd-sourced information sites might not be a bright idea. I wonder if there's been an editing war between people correcting the info to read "John Harrison" and others who keep changing it back to "Khan".
Honestly, this whole "playing coy" bit is becoming more and more aggravating the more I think about it. Which means I should probably stop thinking about it. But this is a new Trek movie and I feel like I should be allowed to get excited without having that excitement spoiled by these stupid games that are either JJ trying to protect a major secret and feeling it's okay to let the fanbase burn to protect it or JJ being a troll. Either way, I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to just ignore anything about this movie until it comes out because at this point the aggravation - at JJ, at wild mass guessing, at pretty much everything that isn't RiverThames awesome theories - is just souring me on it.

Very much so. I need the rest of the thing that doesn't exist to be out NOW.

Re: Star Trek Movies
That was really the only good thing about The Hobbit in IMAX for me.
It does make me sad, though, that we're only going to get a handful of adventures from this cast. I'd watch the hell out of them on TV.
I kind of love the altruistic hypocrisy running through the whole notion of that scene. They keep mentioning the Prime Directive without ever mentioning that the "natural course of development" for the planet is to let the freaking volcano blow and kill anything it kills. That sort of sums up the whole experience of the Prime Directive in the TV shows.

Re: Star Trek Movies
Every trailer I see makes me LESS interested in this movie. I don't care about the villain. I am sick of seeing the same shit blow up. Do the Enterprise crew members get more than one line each in any of the trailers? Is Chekov even IN the movie?
Bah. Get off my lawn, JJ.

Re: Star Trek Movies
JJ, come on down to my lawn. We'll sip cocktails, spin fantastic yarns that don't go anywhere, and make lens flares with prisms and magnifying glasses.
I'm still annoyed with him for all the "John Harrison" crap, but this trailer helped with that a bit. I'm *hoping* that all the secrecy over Harrison's identity is just bungled marketing, and from the look of that trailer I think it's safe to say that whoever Harrison is and whatever his vendetta is, it's not going to be related to Khan or any other simple recycling of a previous story.
I do wonder about the shot of Carol Marcus in her underwear, though. She looks nice, but that seemed so completely random and unnecessary.

I loved that trailer.
Yeah that shot was weird, I wonder if it makes sense in context though.

Re: Star Trek Movies
I agree on the trailers, uh, not being on my lawn.
I loved the first Star Trek (to my complete shock), so hopefully this one has actual Star Trek in it somewhere underneath that generic action movie starring Chris Pine and Ferretface.

Re: Star Trek Movies
Ha. Watching it a second time, I noticed they have a shot of Harrison being escorted down a hall by armed security. All of them red shirts. So much carnage in the making.
Also noticed that the uniforms worn by the Admiralty look an awful lot like Kirk's uniform in The Motion Picture. A nice touch, if a bit anachronistic.

Re: Star Trek Movies
I'm still excited! I thought they confirmed Slaptyback Cumberbund as Kahn? He's obviously NOT Kahn in the particulars, but in the basics he still seems awfully Kahn-esque. I can believe Kirk is a big enough asshole to have had multiple vendettas in his lifetime, but whatevs I really loved JJ's take on the Trek universe and characters.
OOH also no body told me Buckaroo Bonzai/Robocop had a role in this!

Re: Star Trek Movies
Based on the voice, I'm assuming his character is related to Picard. Pre-Locutus? I don't think I've seen Cumberbatch in anything else where he sounded just like Patrick Stewart.

Re: Star Trek Movies
RiverThames has posited the exact same thought. If John Harrison is some kind of Nero-Screwed-Timeline evil Picard come back from the future to right some even more evil wrong wrought by this less exploration-based Starfleet - as overwrought and complicated as that statement is, I may die from squee.

Re: Star Trek Movies
It's not like it'll be the first summer action movie with a storyline that complex/whacked. I'd enjoy it. Though at this point as long as he's anyone other that Khan, I'll be happy. (That just seems like a bad idea for so, so many reasons.)
