Sochi 2014
Your one-stop shop for all things Olympics. And if your hotel isn't ready and your doorknobs come off in your hand and your bathrooms lack walls so that you get to pee in front of an audience and your showers are being recorded for some ministry official and you fall in the uncovered manholes, you needn't worry. Just focus on the athletics.

Don't forget the water with something dangerous in it that you must not use to wash your face. If I was a going there I'd bring a portable water filter.

I think we need to start a prayer circle for anyone staying in the media hotels.
I've been revisiting Vancouver 2010 videos. It was so much fun. I'm feeling nostalgic.

Don't forget what to me is the most horrifying thing -- that everyone is basically instantaneously hacked and has their data stolen the moment they set foot in the country.

I am a bit scared to watch the opening ceremonies after the presentation in Vancouver, where there was the statue of workers with hammer and sickle.

Re: Sochi 2014
Shaun White is getting reamed pretty hard for his decision to pull out of the slopestyle competition, and I'm kind of on the fence about it. On one hand, he claims the course is dangerous. Being Sochi, I would not be surprised if it truly is dangerous. On the other hand, one of his teammates pointed out that there was an alternate who would have loved to have competed and now won't get the chance because of this last-minute decision. That does kind of suck.
Meanwhile, in American figure skating... man, have things changed. I remember being a little girl and watching the Olympics during the Cold War and being all "USA! USA!" because our figure skaters were so awesome. The Americans I saw on the ice today did not impress me much. That Japanese dude (Yuzuru Hany) in the short program for the team competition knocked my socks off. He was amazeballs. Great music, beautiful skating. The team thing is kind of crazy to me, though. It's like they're trying to turn skating into gymnastics or something.

Yuzuru Hanyu is awesome! I think he's going to take gold or silver in the men's competition.
The only skaters from the USA who really have a legit shot at medaling are Meryl Davis and Charlie White. In fact, they are going to medal unless something catastrophic happens, it's just a toss-up to whether they get gold or silver. Anybody else medaling would be a pleasant surprise but a surprise nonetheless.

I loved that Canadian duo in the Pair Short figure skating. The Russians were technically better but it looked too mechanical to me. And the Canadian guy wrote their music, which is awesome.
I don't blame Shaun White for not risking his neck in a course he thinks is dangerous. He doesn't owe his alternate a chance in exchange for 50 years in a wheelchair. Frankly, the alternate (and the audience) should blame the Russians.

I really like him too - he's so interesting a skater! Of course as a good Canadian I'm cheering for Chan, but I wouldn't be unhappy to see him take it...

Yes, exactly.
I feel awful for Jeremy Abbott. He's a glorious skater when he's on, but he's never had a handle on his nerves. Since this is the last year he'll be competing, I was really hoping he'd hold it together. To my mind he's probably the best skater in the last twenty years to never win a world or Olympic medal.

Why, does he have Todd Browning syndrome with the Olympics? And MY GOD WHEN is Petrenko gonna let it go?

Kurt Browning ... or Todd Eldredge? They'd both work. (I must have missed something! What's going on with Petrenko?)
Here's a Washington Post reporter's adorable confession of a lifelong love of skating: You know the voice in your head that tells you what’s right and wrong? Mine sounds like Dick Button.

The choir who sang the Russian national anthem was brilliant. More Russian choral music, please.

You mean Plushenko? And yes, I agree.

Re: Sochi 2014
That entire opening ceremony was, from start to finish--and I mean this in a fairly complimentary way--the most Russian thing I have ever seen. I have to admit the torch relay/fireworks finale set to Firebird was awesome, and everything was very artistic, and the floor was AMAZING. But the general sense I usually get from an opening ceremony is like "Here's our host country and its history, and welcome the rest of the world YAAAAY!" Even Beijing pulled that off amazingly. This was more like the Russian equivalent of shouting " 'MURICA!" over and over again while swilling Bud Light and shooting t-shirt cannons at a NASCAR race.
In other news, Marissa Castelli, the pairs skater, is from my state so she's on the news ALL THE TIME and I will watch the team competitions at least. I hope Meryl Davis and Charlie White get the gold. I did think Virtue/Moir were just a teeeeny bit more artistic in Vancouver and deserved the gold, but I hope they don't get it this time.

Oh, man, I love watching biathlon. Being able to shoot accurately after barrelling along a cross-country ski course is seriously bad- ass.

Me too, Tabby. Biathlon is my favorite winter O sport. I will watch every event this year if it kills me.

Re: Sochi 2014
I actually enjoyed the opening show for the most part. It didn't have the "big" feeling that London and Beijing had, but my mother and I had tons of fun narrating Putin's reaction to errors and other things.
*Guy wearing flag lights runs in wrong direction.*
Putin: "After show, shoot him."
*Random person falls on the floor.*
Putin: "Before next costume change, sheep to gulag."
*Hundreds of male ballet dancers hit the floor for routines wearing either pastels or gold lame Russki pants.*
Putin: "No one in this city ees homosexual."
I really enjoyed the skating program tonight. That 15 year old Russian girl, Yulia, was a bit jerky but amazingly flexible and fearless. I thought the Italian skater who skated to "Ave Maria" was beautiful, too. I felt bad for the Japanese skater who fell after her triple axel attempt; I had a bad feeling about it when one of the commentators said she hadn't attempted it in competition in the last year.
The commercial with Amelia Earhart narrating over the woman ski jumping is pretty cool, but I am honestly flummoxed as to how the Olympics could include women's hockey years before they added women's ski jumping. I mean, lawsuits had to happen. Ridiculous.

Oh wow, the Russians in the pairs free skate…I clapped for them in my empty apartment. They were brilliant to choose the Addam's Family for music too. So much better than, say, "I Could Have Danced All Night" which I think is the most cliched Disney On Ice choice anyone could make.

Re: Sochi 2014
I really hate than I know precisely who won what medals in X event (snowboard slope or whatever it's called), but NBC will not let me watch the event until tonight prime time. After that, they will add it to their (shitty) website. So I can finally stream it like 24 hours after it happened. The last summer Olympics actually had an excellent website, which must not have earned them any money since they went with a new one designed by morons. The mobile app seems to be slightly better, which only begs the questions as to why the website is so terrible.
NBC has the Olympics until 2020, I read. I really want some other network to get the rights and do everything differently and make a shitton of money. In the meantime, I will pirate the damn Olympics, NBC.
ETA: Whoever made it so you can't rewind/fast forward the events...I have very not Olympic spirit feelings towards them.

I personally despise the fact that you have to enter cable/satellite subscription info to watch the online stuff. Why no, NBC, I don't have cable...BECAUSE I WATCH EVERYTHING ONLINE.
