Re: Sochi 2014
I cannot for the life of me find video of the ice dancing medal ceremony. I can't even tell if there IS video of it on the NBC site. Did anybody watch it?

Oh godddddd, I saw the poor American skier blow out his ACL on the halfpipe tonight and it was horrifying. You could hear his agonized screams over the mic for a few seconds and then my mom and I had to mute the TV for a little while. I need to go lie down.

I know, that was…something else. And then they showed him skiing down afterward and I was confused because he looked okay.

This is not a helpful response at all, but they showed a little bit of it tonight at the end of NBC's coverage, so footage exists somewhere.BrightEyes wrote:I cannot for the life of me find video of the ice dancing medal ceremony. Yeah, I just saw the bit that was on NBC. It was funny, the US: looked jazzed! the Canadians: looked pretty happy! the Russians: (no expression)
See?

Full ice dance medal ceremony
The British guy doing the commentary is almost giddy. And I'm not really sure why.

Re: Sochi 2014
I caught a bit of the men's snowboard cross last night (rebroadcast, I guess) and I was torn between feeling disappointed the conditions weren't ideal (it was foggy, the snow wasn't great or the visibility, and the men weren't flying nearly as spectacularly as the women did a few days ago) and feeling amused because the conditions made it look like the Olympics were being held here in Halifax.
And I'm very glad I didn't see the halfpipe accident. I like to not think about the possibility of agonizing injury when I'm watching. Ew.

Yeah, I couldn't watch because my nerves gave out before that, but I could still hear him in the next room when it happened. And then I calmed down and came back in time to see the next guy catch the wall with his skis and bounce down the pipe. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PPL. Clearly the lousy conditions were a major factor in the wipeouts. I couldn't watch bobsled either. Clearly I need a drinky Olympics.

Re: Sochi 2014
I partially enjoy Snowboard Cross due to the wipeout potential, but it was quite obvious that the dudes were struggling with the snow conditions making the event far more than just "Snowboard Cross is hard". This is what happens when the winter Olympics are hosted at a summer resort and part of the reason the Olympic slogan has the word "warm" in it.

Did you guys hear the crowd cheering when Mao Asada fell on her jump? That was HARSH.
Kim Yuna's short program was stunningly beautiful.

No, they were cheering because they thought she'd landed it, then when she fell on the step-out it died out.

Ugh, accidentally spoiled about the women's figure skating final. (Ugh about being spoiled, not about the winner.)

Re: Sochi 2014
That women's gold medal hockey game was as exciting as it gets. Empty net goes off the post! Canada ties with less than a minute left! Chances all over in overtime. Canada takes a penalty! Five seconds later the US takes a penalty! Breakaway! Penalty! Canada wins!
I was exhausted after it was over. I can't even imagine how the actual players were feeling. And just excellent play from both sides. Way to go everyone!

Well done, Team Canada! Women's and men's teams in both hockey and curling win gold! I raise a bowl of poutine in salute.
I have to laugh a little when I see the medal standings. Russia's on top, the US is up there, and then there's Norway. They have the population of what, Chicago? Same with The Netherlands. I should try to figure out the medals per capita.

Beer with breakfast! It's a good day to be Canadian. :)
You don't have to figure it out. There's a website for that.
I think this Slate article lays it out best though.
