No, but it was Dougal, the younger brother. Colum is the chieftan, the man with bad legs. So many pairs of names! I know I called Angus by Rupert's name the first three episodes, and I read the book...

Re: Outlander
Arg, I knew I had written the wrong name! Anyway, did that happen in the book? I don't remember it, but I read the first part of the book over a year ago...

It's been a while since I read the first book but I don't think that happened. Dougal in the books is married at this point in the novel. I wanted to do a reread but lent my copy to a friend.

Re: Outlander
Yeah, I feel like it didn't happen, so it's making me wonder
- Spoiler:
- what they have in store for Dougal and Claire and how that's going to impact her relationship with Jamie.
Re: Outlander
IIRC, (who knows) it becomes a factor, but much farther down the line. Foreshadowing?

Gillian wrote:I never read the books, but I want to give the show a shot because I enjoy watching stories like this more than reading them. I've only seen the first episode so far, but yeah, I think I like her husband too much. How am I supposed to get swept up in Claire and Jamie's epic love when the whole time I'll be like, "Hey, no! What about your husband???"
I would feel like that if I didn't know that there's no chance for them, so I just kinda repress that feeling lol, although it was really hard during this episode. Especially since the music during the scene where they're both running up the hill to each other is so glorious. What the heck, that's music you use for the main couple, not the B couple you're not supposed to really root for.

Was just coming in to say that I am un-ashamedly Team Frank. Poor dude.

I've seen chatter in other places about how the show is wrong to be adding more Frank because he is not worthy due to
But I don't feel sorry enough for him to want him and Claire together when I could be happily watching Claire and Jamie being all adorable and sexy together.
- Spoiler:
- how he has affairs and tries to take Bree.

Re: Outlander
QueensixWhich book does your spoiler happen in? I only skimmed the first one, but enjoyed the Outlander companion, so while I know the general gist of what happens in the first four books, I missed out on some back story.

Re: Outlander
snorf, I think it's the third one. It's told mainly in flashback but it has a lot of people riled up as to whether Frank Randall deserves such consideration as the TV show is giving him!! [/righteous hair toss because why not?!]

Cool thanks! Yeah I'm watching the previously.tv mob implode. It's kindof funny in a shades of TWoP kindof way.

Re: Outlander
I think they have a point? I mean, (book series spoilers) Claire
- Spoiler:
- chooses Jamie and from what I see, the TV audience is more Team Frank so far (not to mention the stray Team Dougal people you see, I mean, to each his own, but I'll just say I never would've guessed that ship would become a glimmer of a thing), than you would want considering that it's an eight-book series full of Claire and Jamie's romance and adventures. You don't want Frank to seem like some sort of mustache twirler who kicks babies, but in the book it made more sense to me why Claire would choose 1743 despite being subjected to spousal abuse, nearly raped and rescued from the nick of time from being burned as a witch...ShowClaire's life with ShowFrank seems pretty damn good. It just seems like a curious narrative choice to build up ShowFrank to the level he has been...a bit more fleshing out, sure, but he's the loser in the love triangle despite being a thoughtful, caring guy crazy about his wife, who lives in a world with electricity and running water and doesn't believe in wife-beating.

Re: Outlander
I can imagine many non-book fans just not getting where Claire is coming from at all, and no, you can never please everyone, but why make it easier for people to dislike the lead character? Which I worry might happen in the second half of the season and going forward to S2.
Good point. Like I said I'm pretty much Team Frank at this stage,

- and I *know* how the book ends

Re: Outlander
Diana Gabaldon posted that in the second half of the season
- Spoiler:
- Jaime will also be doing voiceovers so that might make a difference to how we feel about his actions? Also, there's a lot of relationship stuff like some of the lines from the wedding night and the honeymoon that will be in episode 9 or 10. She was replying on tweetlonger to a twitter comment that episode 8 had felt like it rushed the Jamie/Claire relationship, which is something a friend of mine who is a huge fan of the books (she's not a purist though) also mentioned to me.

Random question, but why did Jamie want Claire's wedding ring made from that key? thanks!

It's not canon, so only the show writers know so far.

Now THAT'S a teaser trailer. April seems so far away, but in a few weeks it'll be 2015 (shut up!) and we'll be closer to it.

Re: Outlander
That's not Jamie in that shot with the man lying down with the bird flapping over him, is it? Kinda looks like him but it's hard to tell, it kinda looks like it could be Willie too.

Re: Outlander
I liked the episode, but I gotta say I really don't like Jamie's voiceover. It's cornier, and Claire's POV is more informative/interesting because she's from the future. I don't know, it feels like either the writers are trying to make it more of a sausagefest or fan pandering to the fans who want Jamie to be THE main character and not Claire.
I thought they handled the spanking scene well.

Re: Outlander
It seemed like the writers decided there was no way Jamie would come off at all decent if that scene hadn't been presented with his perspective (and inner turmoil) just beforehand, as well as how he worked out a compromise. Claire's alone could have made some viewers turn off the TV and never come back.
Anyone listen to Ron Moore's podcasts? Are they worth checking out?
