I know 66 isn't young
I tell you what, the closer I get to it, the younger it seems.

He once stayed at the hotel where I worked in college, and couldn't have been nicer (his assistant was a neurotic pain, but that's another story.) This is so sad. I can't say I was a fan, but he seemed like the kind of person who would always be around, which was comforting.

Oh drat.

Say what you will about Davy Jones' musical abilities he was by far the most charismatic of the Monkees. I got introduced to the show during the MTV revival.

Momo making it to 101 makes me view anybody dying before the age of ninety to be too soon!

Ralph McQuarrie, lead concept artist for the original Star Wars trilogy. (Also Battlestar Galactica, original flava.) He was an incredible talent.

Damn. Of all the deaths posted here, this is the one that really got me, probably because I'm a huge Star Wars fan. I can picture many of his images right now, because I've seen so many of them. He was one of the major forces that created the look of Star Wars.

Davy was never my favorite Monkee; I always preferred Micky's singing voice and had a crush on Peter. But as a lifetime fan of The Monkees, I am so saddened by his passing.

Robert Sherman died yesterday. He and his brother wrote most of the Disney songs you remember fondly from your childhood (second golden age not included), for example the songs in Mary Poppins, The Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Jungle Book, among others, along with In the Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Tiki Room, One Little Spark, There's a Great Big Beautiful Tomorrow, It's a Small World After All and others from the parks.

I highly recommend the documentary The Sherman Brothers which is (was?) on Netflix Watch Instant, because you'll go "Man, they wrote that too?" dozens of times during it.

Brian Glazer, inventor of the Mr. Coffee coffeemaker. My mornings wouldn't be anywhere near as pleasant without his work.

Be sure to watch the video at the end of the Earl Scruggs obit! "Foggy Mountain Breakdown" with both Scruggs and Steve Martin on banjo.
