Game of Thrones
So consider this space going forward the "main" show thread, but one in which we as posters make every effort to speak only to events that happen in an episode of the show whether you've read the books or not. I don't think we will utterly ban spoiler text, but l think skipping spoiler bars is a good idea, if you want to discuss a spoiler we now have a whole thread for that.
So I'll start, I'm interested to see if Petyr actually recognized Arya this week, and if so what he will do with that information. And Maise Williams has been a revelation this season, I hope there is enough work for her to submit for an acting award and actually get some recognition.

Re: Game of Thrones
When that scene started we went "OH SHIT," and then we went "Actually, not oh shit, Littlefinger will not say a damn thing, he will just use this bit of information later when it suits his agenda somehow."

I've see complaints that the woman playing Ygrette is too pretty. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that charge leveled at Maisey Williams being too cute for Arya.

Yeah, that's true. In the books, one of her nicknames from Sansa s Arya Horseface. By those standards, Maisie is too cute. But she's done very well with the part, which forgives many sins.

But she's also said to look like Lyanna who was considered a great beauty, so I don't think Arya is meant to be homely. Maybe just awkward and tomboyish.

And being a Tomboy in medieval times was societal a different proposition than now (yes I know it's Fantasy). I really haven't been upset with much of the liberties taken with the translation so far and aging the children was the right move.
Anyway with actors that young you have a smaller pool to pick from.

Also, I don't know that what someone's teenage sibling calls them is an accurate descriptor, though I have never read the books.

I captured the castle. Me. I did it. I threw grappling hooks over the walls and took it. It's mine. I won. (etc., etc.)

This latest episode inspired one of my all-time favorites on Arrested Westeros: Daenerys as Tobias Tunke.

Re: Game of Thrones
Actually I think it was Sansa's friend Jeyne Poole who called her Arya Horseface. Presumably Sansa was too annoyingly good to do so herself.

Just keep digging that hole Theon. I'm sure that's the orphan boys.
The Starks at least need to cut something off of Jaime. Let Karstark take a nut or something.
Tywin and Arya probably won't end well, but I love their interactions.

Tonight's ep: Is it really in character for Jaime to murder a relative in cold blood like that? Someone who'd never done a thing to him? It didn't seem like something he would do. I was pretty shocked.

I haven't read the books but anyone who can throw a ten year old to his likely death seems pretty cold blooded to me. Particularly, when it was a such a distant family member that it was basically someone who happened to share his last name and killing him was an escape plot.

I was like, whoa, but I think I buy it. He's was very fun to watch in that scene - I thought it was good for a reminder of that Jaime is really vicious, and also really dangerous, that there's a reason they have him so trussed up.
Ygritte and Jon were annoying as hell in this episode. I hate the "let me talk about sex and the other person pretends they aren't affected by they so are woohoo" cliche.
How can Tywin not guess that it MIGHT be Arya?

I think it was in-character, too. Jamie will do anything to get back to Cersei. Period.

This Tywin/Arya subplot is just fantastic. Fleshes out Tywin a bit.

Re: Game of Thrones
I used to feel bad for Theon because it was stuck in such a sucky position but the last two episodes have me completely hating him. I bet he did kill the orphan boys but still, god he sucks.
Jon's story bores me now. "Let's walk around in the snow and talk about sex while I lead you into a trap." Snore.
Arya thinking about sticking that knife into Tywin's neck was kind of awesome as was his calling her out for being wellborn.

I dunno. I didn't actually have to listen to her talk when I read the books. "ooooooooh mistaaaaah croooooooo saaaaaaah" argh. At least she didn't say "you know nothing John Snow" 20 billion times though, it's true.

Jaquar and Arya may be even better than Arya and Tywin.
"a man has patrol duty"
"a man can go kill himself!"
Talisa ass but no Robb ass? that's such bullshit.

Re: Game of Thrones
I'm not so much a fan of this season, I do not care about Shay, or Roz, or whoever this Valarian chick is Rob boinked. They don't have ton of chemistry, and it's making him look an even bigger brick head than his dad.
And mentioning "the game" once was expedient talking in that woefully extended metaphor was weak. I literally wanted to say WE GET IT, while Varys and Tyrion patted themselves on the back about the game and the pieces.
I am loving Arya, but I don't know that I could *not* love Arya, her storyline is the one that is hanging together the best for me so far (and weirdly Theon). But this series is a BITCH to adapt and I still largely think the producers are doing their best when they're not finding a way to sexposition.

Re: Game of Thrones
Theon's story IS holding together well and I think Alfie Allen is killing it. He just makes it obvious that Theon feels like he's fucked no matter what he does. His actions are absolutely terrible but I kind of feel like Rodrik Cassel with his head on the block, just shaking my head at him and sighing.
Also it cracks me up that Sepinwall's reviews are calling Pyat Pree "Warlock Dean Pelton."

Re: Game of Thrones
There might be three other men able to take Jaime in a fight, but no one could ever compete with Jaime as Westros' top insult comic. I'm surprised he didn't offer to end the war with a "Yo mama so fat" contest.
For all the complaints about sexposition, the Quarthian fashion of one boob out dresses in the book was even too much for this show. I've also noticed Dany, Shae, Cersie and Ros haven't been naked in this season, so maybe it's just for the rookies.

Re: Game of Thrones
I was kind of worried that the show wouldn't be able to begin to do justice to the Blackwater battle, but I thought the wildfire effects were fantastic.
My god, the whole Lannister clan (apart from Joff, of course) is badass.

Re: Game of Thrones
Agreed on the wildfire effects. I was genuinely impressed from a visual effects point of view. I also really liked that there was a good measure of horror on the faces of everyone on the battlements as they watched the total destruction brought on by it and listened to all the screams of the dying men.
When Tywin strolled in at the end (and the main musical theme swelled up) I was all, "HELL YEAH!" (I may have rewatched that bit a few times. Just sayin'.)
I did have to check out a few recaps for some of the details, like I had no idea who that kid was Cersei had with her (turns out it was her youngest son - I completely forgot she had three children), or that the guy who slashed Tyrion was one of the king's guard? That explains the look on his face, both before and after.
I really hope Tyrion gets his due from the other soldiers and especially his father given how he roused everyone to fight and then led the battle. I'm also looking forward to Tywin's reaction when he hears about Joffrey's cowardice (honestly, when that dude comes to tell Joffrey his mother wants to see him, I was fully expecting Joffrey to call her 'mummy' he was so on the verge of being blubbery).
(Also: go with the Hound, Sansa!!)

Re: Game of Thrones
It's budgetary. (You pay for every boob, by the minute/second, side versus front, one at a time or both together, it's all in the contract. It's not like Lena Hedley would refuse, but that her agent presented a price with two commas in it.)I've also noticed Dany, Shae, Cersie and Ros haven't been naked in this season, so maybe it's just for the rookies.
In a rare example of reverse sexism, men don't get the same options. Their dignity (and naughty bits) are protected only by the squeamishness of the (hetero male) directors, and their own gutlessness. (You go, Alfie Allen.)
What odds are you giving, Sag? I want a gif thingy with Dinklage saying 'Fuck. Me.'I really hope Tyrion gets his due from the other soldiers and especially his father
