Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Probably. Not sure if it's individually selectable or something that must be set for the whole forum. Or what other people want...

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
There's a yes/no preference for online status in settings, but mine is set to hide status and I still see it on mine, so not sure how it works.

Link style changed
Okay, I've made the change to bold underlined black links. Please tell me:
1) Have you noticed any weird side-effects of the change? (This is always a risk with playing with CSS...)
2) Is it a step in the right direction?
We can try blue links too, if that sounds better.

I was able to *hide* the banner, since I wasn't wild about it either, individuals who are fine with other people knowing they are online still have their names listed at the bottom of the home page/forum page/topic page.
Unless a bunch of people just LOVED that feature I'll leave it hidden.
Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
I like the online feature. Forumer told you who was online just not on individual posts. It's nice if you want to PM someone.

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Hooray! I didn't even notice the links had changed at first, because that's how they used to be on old SF. But then I realized I had no trouble knowing where to click to see the horrible ice-skate boot. Thanks, p_p!
As far as I'm concerned it's good like that. It reads "link" to me, without having to think about it, and I don't think anyone's going to need to bold AND underline something at the same time. Haven't seen any side effects, but I'll keep my eyes open.

Yay, thank you! That banner was making me nuts.
And thank you for all the hard work. The board looks great.

I didn't change the banners...I've only changed one thing, the link style. ;-)
I'm glad people are liking the changes mostly. Hope it stays that way.

Haha! Well, the link style looks great, too. :) I have a tendency to miss links that are right in front of my face, even with my mouse hovering over them, so it's nice to have them stand out more.

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Is there any way to get a "mark all forums as read" link on the "view posts since last visit" page? The way it is now, I have to click to see all the new posts, open and read the threads I want to read, and then click back to the home page to mark all threads as read. Does this make sense? I'm sort of tired and it seems confusing to me.

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Shouldn't the act of reading the posts mark them as read? Why do you want to mark everything read if you haven't read it? (Yes, I'm sure it's possible to add a link there. I just don't get it because I've never used the forum that way myself.)
ETA: I asked the mods for permission to add one.

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
I know I can't be the only one who doesn't read every last thread on this board. (There's a lot threads for shows I don't watch in the Television section, for example.)

I sure don't, but I just leave them unclicked and they go away. Anyhow I asked permission to add the link for those who want it.

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Actually, is it possible to have them not go away so quickly? At Forumer, if you didn't read a thread or mark it as read, it would keep indicating unread posts in that thread for... awhile (I never measured, but as long as I didn't log out, things didn't seem to` change for well over a week). Here, it seems like it's only "new posts since your last visit," which--I don't get to read everything I want to on each visit, and I hold off on certain TV threads when I don't get to see the episode right away, so it's making the new post/no new posts indicator more annoying than useful. (Plus it'd be nice to be able to go straight to the last post I didn't read, which I can't do if the indicators disappear.)

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Okay, I have permission to add the "Mark posts as read" so I'll add that to my list for tonight.

Poubelle, I'm not sure I can vary that interval at all because I don't think admins have direct control of the code that controls that.

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Thanks, p_p. I think I'm just a little anal about everything I don't read being clean and marked as read! One of those weird internet habits.particle_person wrote:Shouldn't the act of reading the posts mark them as read? Why do you want to mark everything read if you haven't read it? Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
I like the online feature.
Just to be clear you like the *banner* aspect or the "online" feature? There sort of two separate things. The online feature is still active for any member who has that in their profile and people are listed at the bottom of whatever page/forum/topic level you are at, there might be a way to signal individuals posters are on line with a less obtrusive picture than the current banner. But right now it's just a hide/show option.
Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Why don't you let me try replacing it with a simple ordinary text word, "online" or "not online"? Everything is in flux, nothing is permanent. And while we're here, does anyone other than Jasmine feel a need for blue otherwise-unstyled links?

I like the online banner in the corner of the posts. It means I don't have to scroll down to see who's online. I can just look at the posts.

Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
My plans for tonight are to put some kind of online "signal" similar to the banner back, but hopefully it will be something less obtrusive, like maybe just a dot in the corner. We shall see.
I'll also be adding a "Mark Posts as Read" link to the the new posts page.
I'll look into the vanishing smileys problem too. :)

Jasmine, I don't think the delay is something I can affect. It's probably part of the forum code, not like the HTML and CSS I'm modifying for the other things. :(

Okay, this forum will now go on the blink (hopefully not literally) because I am going to try to implement today's changes. Wish me luck. Wish us ALL luck.

As long as it doesn't interfere with brunch tomorrow, it's all good. If it erases the worldly existence of Bloody Marys, then you will have a problem...particle_person wrote:Okay, this forum will now go on the blink (hopefully not literally) because I am going to try to implement today's changes. Re: Technical Issues and Bugs
Progress!
Lily Rose, there is now a "Mark all forums read" button in the main toolbar up top, which is also available from the Search page.
Smileys- do they work?
;-)
:)
:-)
:(
:-(
YES, text smileys now work.
And I have no idea how to get the login banners back (blixie, what did you DO?) so I can't modify them to something unobtrusive.
Modifications are finished for this evening.
