Wow. That is one excessively problematic interview, right there. His PR people are really about to earn their pay.

I think what's going on there is that he's judging the whole world by himself, as if he's representative of everyone. He's said slurs, so therefore everyone else has, and so they must all be hypocrites. He isn't hurt when someone is called a n****r, so those people must need a thicker skin. It's a refusal to understand that other people are NOT like him, and to try to understand how they might be hurt.

I didn't. I just really liked him in movies. But now that I think about it, I don't think I've seen another interview.

I am finding this really hard to reconcile with Daniel Radcliffe's hero worship of him -- Radcliffe is most definitely an outspoken LGBT ally, and I feel like he wouldn't be putting up with this bullshit from Oldman if it was his normal behavior, so... I don't know. Performance art? Brain tumor? Sudden-onset psychosis?

I'd say age gap and a professional relationship. I doubt they sit around talking politics and how awesome the old days were when people weren't so "uptight". Dan probably just idolizes him as an actor.

Bill Maher may be a smug prick, but he's earned his free speech stripes fairly and openly, and people are constantly pissed off at him for one thing or another. I've loved Oldman for a while, but as an actor, and I'll be just as happy to continue to do so as long as I never read any of his opinions ever again. I don't want this to turn into a Clapton thing, where I just can't appreciate someone's work anymore due to their utter prickishness.

Yeah, I've always thought of him as an actor not a celebrity. Which he probably should be, if he spends most of his time wishing he could use slurs against everybody not a white straight Christian male and can't understand why that makes him an asshole.

Well that is just a darn odd apology statement. "I know the Jews don't control Hollywood— but I just read a book about how they used to!"

I have some empathy for the "everyone says racial slurs" thing because I know that I have in the past, although not certainly any time in recent years. I got older, realized how hurtful some words I thought were pretty innocuous were, and stopped using them. But if you KNOW those words are hurtful and you continue to use them, then yeah, you just might be a bigot.

And if the racial stuff wasn't upsetting enough, I was disappointed that he said he basically did the Batman and Harry Potter movies for the paychecks and that he didn't have anything nice to say about them. Someone should remind him that before those two series, I don't think he was getting much work, and that both helped revive his reputation. I don't think he would have been cast as Smiley in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy without them. Look, I understand that neither role was Hamlet, but I loved how he played Jim Gordon, particularly in the Dark Knight. Thanks for ruining that too, Gary.

When he brought up the Saint Patrick's day thing, I was just "dude, don't drag us into this". I mean, I am annoyed that countries and companies take the day as an excuse to have a piss-up (including here) which perpetrates the whole 'oh the Irish are drunks' thing, but that's once a year. Nobody goes around wearing green shamrocks at Coachella or whatever it's called and instagramming it.

It's okay to have thoughts about stuff, but there are times when you have to realise you're not putting up with the kind of shit other groups are so you should just stay quiet.
