I have to think there was some creative license and/or Stockholm Syndrome going on in that NYT piece, because I'm not seeing the "danger" or "charisma" in Deen or the "beauty" or "fragility" in Lindsay.

My favorite is that he literally can't even act "sleeping" convincingly, hee.

One good thing I'll say about that clip: the house looks cool.

That is an incredible house. And I totally believe that it's a clip from a movie crowdfunded on Kickstarter. I also believe Deen shows all the acting talent a porn star needs (ie, none at all). Though I suppose he came across better during filming, what with his ability to actually show up.

The NYTimes article said that the first 15 minutes are godawful but that it picks up/gets better after that. I doubt it's a good film but you can't really judge it on the basis of a 3 minute clip.

But I'd say you can make a good guess based on the trailers and both Sundance and SXSW rejecting it. With the names attached, if the film was even mediocre, I think it would've been accepted.

The author also openly admits he's biased.

I like it, but that may be a little Stockholm Syndrome kicking in. Whenever I do one of these stories, I always root for the project. So if you’re there day-in, day-out, you lose critical perspective. But as I said in the story, the film’s weakest 10 minutes is the film’s first 10 minutes, and that ain’t good.

At the wrap party, I tried to talk Lindsay into posing for some photos with Deen for the story. She said she would if I could get him to apologize for “disrespecting” her during filming. She wanted Deen to get on a table and shout a mea culpa. Deen just laughed and said, “That is so not happening.”

Lawd, that woman.

Just for the record, I don't think that's really true. Sure, at least at Sundance, the programmers' heads are a little too easily turned by big names. But Lindsay is really the only "big" name here, and Sundance considers itself above that kind of desperation. They don't need a spectacle, to be frank. I don't know as much about SXSW's programming, but I suspect they would have the same feeling. I don't think any of the big name festivals is particularly interested in being the location of the World Premiere of The Canyons. The best they're going to do is a smaller regional thing. Palm Springs, something like that. A festival that wants and needs the attention.

I don't know, I think in the film world, the writer of Taxi Driver and Raging Bull* would still be a pretty big name, as is BEE, right? So it's not just the on-screen talent but also who was behind it that might have given it some clout, if it were any good.

*Nonetheless, I thought Schrader was the one who came off the worst in that Times profile, and perhaps Hollywood feels they've given him enough chances.

Sundance takes some pretty bad films, including Bret Easton Ellis' last one (which was terrible), so yeah, I think they would've jumped on this if it weren't a hot mess.

Yeah, I figured Schrader's attachment would get it in more than anything, and the fact that it's getting rejected with him at the helm doesn't say good things. And both festivals have had their share of shitty selections.

(He does come off horribly in the article, which really is something, because the Times writer seems to be actively rooting for him.)

Can't go to court, she's "sick"

Her nerve is pretty amazing.

Maybe she wouldn't have so much nerve if she didn't get away with a ton of other stuff. They need to just throw her ass in jail for a while.

It seems her 'lying' case has been moved to March 18th (if it goes to trial).

I caught some of the live feed of the trial proceedings on TMZ. LiLo looks a bit rough (given she and her mom made a last-minute flight from NYC to LA to arrive to the court on-time) and her new lawyer is a ... goof. No wonder why the judged dissed him when he tried to curry favor by pointing out that they were both from New York and she was a former NYPD detective (neither fact I knew until now).

As for the whole 'sick with flu/upper respiratory infection' excuse that LiLo originally had planned (which is basically a cop-out), I guess the judge would have whacked her with a bench warrant if that were to come to pass. I was secretly hoping that would be the case today.

And she was also rejected by two hotels. The first she tried to check into said she was banned, because she trashed a room back in 2007 and the second one officially said they were booked for the night. There's no word on where she actually slept.

This is someone who truly needs to hit genuine rock bottom without being saved by people. It's like she needs to go the Robert Downey Jr. route. (though he was still throwing down amazing performances when he was a complete and utter wreck.)

I think with her even if she hits rock bottom...she seems like an extremely unpleasant person even without her addiction. In a way that people like RDJ or Drew Barrymore never seemed to be. I do hope she gets better, but I also hope she goes far away after that.

I'm with Kiran: she's horrible aside from stealing and drugs.

I agree. There has always been a sense of entitlement with Lindsay that never made me warm to her, and I never thought she was that great of an actor.

She's barely been a good actor, but she does have a natural charisma, which is a rare commodity and which is why people have been so desperate to give her more chances than more talented actors would get. (RDJ is charismatic too, but he also has talent.)

She does? I haven't seen it. Even in "Mean Girls", which is considered Lindsay's shining moment, she barely got by. I still don't understand the praise she gets for that movie when her character didn't do much and was just sort of there. YMMV.

She used to be an alright actor I thought, but those days are long gone and they ain't coming back. Now's she's dreadful. I used to feel sympathetic towards her because her parents were so vile and selfish, but plenty of people have terrible parents and don't go full Lohan on life. Trying to get other people blamed for her crimes, stealing other's beloved possessions, showing no respect for anyone she works with by turning up astoundingly late all the time. Not to mention all the crazy driving - it's a miracle she hasn't killed someone. And on top of all that, still convinced she's some kind of second coming of Marilyn, and victimized by the courts and the police for having the nerve to actually press charges when she breaks the law.

Yeah, I do hope she hits rock bottom and gets better, because everyone deserves a shot at sorting themselves out. But I also agree with Kiran, then I'd like her to go away.

I thought she was super cute and engaging in The Parent Trap, and pretty good as a mom in a teen's body in the Freaky Friday remake and had good chemistry with Jamie Lee Curtis. I also thought she was gorgeous before she completely messed herself up, gorgeous in a bright and (oy, how ironic) healthy way.

I agree, though, about "get better, and then please leave."

I've never thought she was an amazing talent or anything like that, but I did like her. There was something appealing about her that made me willing to spend money on her movies, and she was very pretty in an unusual way (for Hollywood). But that kind of charisma will only take you so far and she passed that point a long time ago. So I guess I'm another vote for I do hope she gets better and then goes away.
