Anyone else watching this? I ended up watching the whole thing over the course of yesterday and today and was surprised by how much I liked it, given that it features a bunch of actors that I don't normally care for (Taylor Schilling, Lauren Prepon, Taryn Manning) - however, I really enjoyed all the performances here. Natasha Lyonne, in particular, kills it.

I've never heard of that show. Is it on cable?

I must be the most uninformed person in the world when it comes to television.

It is a Netflix original like House of Cards. It has great reviews I'm going to give it a try today.

I am on episode 9 and I like it a lot. Who knew I could like a Jason Biggs!

It's been renewed for a second season but I wonder how long they are going to go with it given its based on a true story and she was only there for 13 months.

I really like it too. I made it through four episodes in 24 hours, which is total binge watching for me.

I read an interview that stated that they changed her last name and plan to go in different directions from the actual true story. Plus since I'm only on episode five, it seems like not a lot of time has passed. The first season may not cover the entire thirteen months? But again I'm only on episode five.

Given how the season ends, I'm guessing that

and that the Netflix version is going to end up pretty different from the real life version. From what I understand, the real Piper wasn't actually in the same prison as her ex-girlfriend, so the Netflix version is already pretty different.

I actually really hope that they don't have her go beyond 13 months. That could easily be extended to a second season. Yes, I realize they changed a lot, she wasn't in prison with her ex, etc. However, the way it's structured I could see them continuing on without Piper in prison.

TWOP started a sub-forum with individual threads, is there any consensus on how to deal with discussion? All in spoiler text?

In episode 5 they mentioned that shes only been in there three weeks. So I think they can easily extend the show because the first season appears to only take place over a couple months.

It's remarkably fun, and reminds me a bit of the creator's earlier efforts on Weeds, before she obviously lost interest in the show and ran out of ideas.  I'm also surprised at how much I like all of these actors who I'd previously been neutral on (Natasha Lyonne, who's turning in something near an award-worthy performance) or actively disliked (Laura Prepon, who is causing me to rethink my entire opinion regarding her talents, and Jason Biggs, who is essentially playing the same person he always plays but somehow makes it sympathetic this time around).

Laura Prepon I think, is an actress that cannot do straight up comedy. She has not great timing. Which is bad because she made her name on that 70s show which was imo a very good, very underrated comedy with a really good cast, that highlighted she was the weak link. BUT a few years backs she was on October Road. It was an awful show and I was addicted to it and despite the show itself having a very good cast, the writing was so mannered and stilted that everyone was not good (seriously, the most annoying character popped up on Mad Men as Don's half brother and I was STUNNED at how heart wrenching he was.) But, Laura Prepon was REALLY good. She had a certain levity that worked really well, and was able to ground it all in real emotion.

I think if she has a skill its that and its working well in this context. Aside from her though, the actors are all people I have found talented, but in some cases ill used or stereotyped (Taryn Manning, Biggs in particular).

I agree--this is the most I've ever liked Laura Prepon. I'm also finding her really, really sexy here.

But the surprise standout for me is Taryn Manning. I can't help but think there's some all-too-familiar meth-head behavior going on, but she's managed to add some layers to what could come off as a joke of a character.

I mainlined the whole thing yesterday and enjoyed it a lot. Piper seems real to me in the sense that I like her, can't stand her and feel sorry for her in equal measure. My favorite though is Taystee. She's hilarious and sweet and I can't wait to find out more about her.

I haven't watched yet, but I used to work with the real-life Piper's husband who is a super cool guy, and I'm just really happy that this show is so well-received so far.

When I was reading the reviews I was like SO she's a female Beecher, but for the "feeling sorry for her" part. Heh, my Bitchball issues die hard.

But I do like that this show has her called on her shit regularly and that we weren't supposed to be on her side, I thought in that regard.

I find James and Daya adorable despite being stupid and
Spoiler:
. I also can't decide who grosses me out more. Healy or Pornstache. It depends on the episode or the scene.

Oh, Healy definitely. Pornstache wears his grossness on his sleeve, which somehow makes it slightly more palatable than Healy's stealth misogyny/homophobia/whatever.

All of you (and others on Twitter) talking about the show has got me watching the show too, even though I wasn't planning to (I heard a Moth story told by the real life Piper, and it was just so so). I am hooked, kind of. I'm hooked by the prison scenes, so I fast forward through most of the non-prison scenes, at least all of Piper's scenes, anyway. Hope I'm not missing too much.

I love the back story. All of them. I'd say don't skip them. I love finding out why and how each of the women ended up in prison.

I find the context that they add to be necessary.

Yeah I'd find if I wasn't watching them I'd be missing a lot of necessary backstory that adds a lot more to the characters.

Ok, to clarify, I'm watching much of the secondary character backstory. I am fast forwarding through most of Piper's flashbacks, and her interactions with her husband, friend, and mother. I am sneak watching the series in little bits because don't have much time I can allot to it right now, and less interested in her character. I might go back and watch later, not sure.

I kind of loved the WAC episode. The acting is great. Crazy Eyes is aptly named. I also love the racial and body diversity in the cast. I wondered where I had seen the actress who plays Boo, and I checked imdb, and basically in everything where you need a butch lesbian to say one line. I'm glad talented actresses who do not have traditional magazine cover looks have a chance to shine in this series.

If you get time you should go back and watch. While Piper is a spoiled idiot a lot of the time, I find that interaction really helps in fleshing her out, and in particular I found Schilling and Biggs' interaction surprisingly compelling.

What's going on with Piper's husband ends up having major influence on what goes on inside the prison walls.

Yeah.  I love the one of the track-star girl.  For some reason I found her story far more tragic than anyone else's.

Piper isn't the most interesting, but I heard that Jenji Kohan said somewhere that if you tried to make a show about black, Latina and old women in prison, no one would touch it.  So a pretty, blonde, educated woman at the center is pretty much necessary to get it made.

That said, when Poussey and Crazy Eyes left the wheelchair girl alone with Piper, followed by, "Damn, girl, you cold." "Bitches gotta learn." might have been my favorite bit.

I like Piper actually. I mean I don't find her likable a lot of the time, but I imagine if I got sentenced to prison I'd be much closer to her in terms of behaviour then anyone else, because I'm not white, but I am not someone who would thrive in that environment.

Also I think Taylor Schilling is excellent. I've liked her since Mercy, even though she does a lot of crappy shows and movies.

I've seen the first episode and I certainly find it compelling and well-written, but it's hard for me to empathize with show Piper, especially since she's so DUMB compared to real Piper. I feel like the writers are going for a satire on privileged cluelessness, and sometimes it works, but seriously, she is already striking me as too stupid to live. I don't expect most people to know how to act in prison, but I expect people would know at least to keep their mouth shut SOMETIMES.
